Have you always wanted to see a black bear, elk, or hawk in real life? Get your booty (and camera) over to Mueller State Park, then! It’s a wildlife oasis out here, thanks to the park’s 5,000 acres of lush meadows, native grasses, colorful wildflowers, natural springs, and dense forests. Fancy a hike? There’s loads of trails out here. But, Fido will have to stay at home. Mueller doesn’t allow our canine companions on the hiking trails or in the backcountry (they can hang out in the campgrounds and picnic areas, and on paved roads.) Yeah, it’s a bit of a bummer, but the lack of pets makes the wildlife viewing that much more epic (and safe). Start your day at the Visitor Center, where stoked staff will help you make the most of your time. Plus, the center is perched on top of the Big View Overlook. Not surprisingly, there’s a wonderful panoramic overlook of the mountains that rest in the shadow of the infamous Pikes Peak. Once you’ve soaked in the mountain scenery, scoot on over to one of the nearby trailheads and get to explorin’.
