Do whatever you can to get over to Kitts Marsh! It is the most incredible spot for a weekend (or week) getaway from the city. A friend and I left Washington, DC at 6pm on a Friday evening and got down to the Marsh in under an hour and a half - and that is including the Districtâs crazy traffic! The directions listed are spot on, turning right down a long country road leading straight to the water but right before - splitting off to the left to meet with your host, Marilyn.
Marilyn was extremely helpful and kind, leading us down her private drive past grazing cattle to park our cars for the night. From there, you walk through a short wooded path leading to a stunning view of the planked walkway guiding your party to the shanty on the Patuxent. The house itself is extremely cozy, with heat for the winter and fans for the summer. Downstairs you can find yourself cozied up on an antique rocking chair, playing cards on the table (inside or outside) or cooking up a meal on the hotplate or microwave. For those skilled in the art of grilling - there is an electric and coal grill that can be brought out on the deck to cook up some grub. DONâT forget to bring a lot of bottled water for cooking and hydrating - but if you do, no worries since there are a lot of markets within a 10 minute drive away (although it sure doesnât feel like it).
Upstairs, there are two cozy beds that can comfortably fit two each as well as a composting toilet to complete all the needed amenities of a "glamping" getaway.
All-all-all? I can not wait to come back and bring a different group of friends each time. From fishing, to swimming, to kayaking, walking the beach, or exploring the marsh - just make sure you give yourself enough time here to do it all.
At the end of the trip, we made sure everything was clean and all the breakers turned off to save Marilyn a trip down. When we stopped in to say goodbye, we were greeted with freshly baked cookies for the road and good conversation - an appropriate cap for the great trip we had had.
I am extremely happy with my stay here and came back to the city well rested with good memories of the weekend spent on the water. I have already told all of my friends that if they want a weekend getaway from the city - they need not look any further than Kitts Marsh.

Past trips
Camping on the Farm
in Camping on the Farm, IdahoGreat host + great rv spot!
Jaysa was an absolutely amazing host - helping us find the place with a self-made PDF about her plot of land! It was super easy to find and the perfect rest stop for us on our road trip!
The spot has power and water so PERFECT for RVs, vans, and truck campers! Her land has a basketball court, a pair of goats, chickens, cats, bunnies and a cute dog to keep em all inline :)
Can't say enough about the flexibility and communication from the host! A great spot all around.
Site 2 - Kanji Kamp
in Zachary A.âs Land, OregonPeaceful stay at kanji
After 12 days on the road, Kanji Kamp was exactly what we needed! This amazing old homestead is the perfect place to set up shop whether you are just trying to get out of the city for a couple days, or looking for a base camp while exploring the Oregon coast.
The host, Zach, and his pup met us at the gate and showed us around his property when we pulled in. The site is beautifully laid out and Zach allows you to park or set up your tent where you see fit.
The property spans 50 acres and you are able to walk around and explore to your hearts desire. 10 minutes down the road both directions there are more trails, a river, a coffee shop and a general store to snag some supplies for your adventures.
The site comes with a composting toilet nicely tucked away in the woods to make your stay a little bit more of a glamping experience. We can not wait to come back and see the finished Bus build (maybe coming to hipcamp!?) and explore more of the surrounding area. Thanks again Zach!
Site 1 - Camp Maytown
in Camp Maytown, WashingtonGreat, convenient overnight stay!
Great little property! Nate (property owner) owns the land where he has built 3 parking spaces for van/truck campers to park. The land also has a large field, a tavern he is getting ready to open, and an RV park.
There is no toilet or potable water so make sure you come prepared! Nate is currently in the process of trying to get some power to the sites - but for being right off the highway, it was the perfect stop for anyone roadtripping and needing a place to park!
Excited to stop by again when the tavern opens!!
Site 1 - Riverside Camping Solitude
in River Valley Heaven, WashingtonThe best spot to set up camp!
This spot was amazing! Super easy to get to, close by to Olympic, a lot of space between sites, huge field for dogs to run or to play yard games, and RIGHT on the river! Ticks off all the boxes to have an amazing camping experience.
We easily backed our truck camper right in to spot #4 which has a nice gradient from the site right down to the river. Our sleep was amazing, being lulled by the dull roar of the river. It looks like the other spots lend themselves better to tent camping, but technically you can park anywhere in the field if you have a bigger rig.
Can't wait to come back!
Chuckanut Mountains Sauna & Camping
in Chuckanut Hills Farm & Camp, WashingtonLittle slice o' heaven
What an amazing property! Andrea and her family recently purchased this land and have been hard at work making this little homestead the nicest retreat for their family, friends, and hipcampers alike!
The property is set back on a gravel road, and although you are only a short 15 minute drive from Bellingham and all the amazing biking and hiking the town has to offer - you feel like you're way out in the mountains. A nice retreat for anyone looking for a break!
Whether you are just trying to get out in the woods or looking for a glamping experience (potable water, shower, toilet, SAUNA) this property will not disappoint!
Andrea and her family were so kind and we loved learning more about their story. We can't wait to come back!
!!Disclaimer!! This property has a lot of chickens, which includes a lot of roosters - be sure to bring to ear plugs for those like are looking to sleep in. Although, it's camping, better to be up and at em anyways :)
Site 1 - Close to CB riding
in Close to CB riding, ArizonaThe best camping in crested butte.
What an amazing stay. Pulling in to R's land is like something out of a story book. 360 degree views the moment you pull in to the property.
R gave great instructions on how to get in to the main field you will be staying at. Once there, the world is at your finger tips. The property is in a prime location - having camped in CB a couple times, I think this has to be the best location available if you want to do it all! With only a 10-15 minute bike ride to town (or 5 min drive), you are able to choose from a plethora of things to do!
In our 3 days here - we hit the town for food and drinks, 3 stellar mountain bike trails, the CB bike park, as well as some lakes to cool off. Safe to say we left with our belly and our hearts full!
Speaking of lakes, the icing on the cake was the fact that there are multiple lakes located on Rs property - so be sure to bring a lawn chair and some water toys if you are going to be camping during the spring/summer season!
R is SO friendly and helpful and will make your stay something special. I have camped in Crested Butte a handful of times but I will only be staying at R's plot moving forward!
Robin Hood Lode
in Jason H.âs Land, ColoradoWow. what a gem in leadville.
Getting to Robin Hood from the town of Leadville is as easy as can be. The directions here are spot on and upon arriving (10 min drive from town center) you will be greeted by Jason & fam if they're home (who live just up the road from the camp), Timber the lovable guard dog, and a pair of spunky llamas.
When they use the term glamping here, they mean glamping. Jason has done a great job making this camping excursion as easy as can be. The tent houses 4 twin beds and a one large full mattress. In the middle you will find a wood burning stove - along with dry wood and kindling to either warm up the tent before heading to sleep or getting breakfast going in the morning.
You can park right outside the tent next to the port-o-potty or next to a huge stack of freshly cut wood and a picnic table. The fire pit outside of the tent makes it the perfect place to gather with your crew before turning in.
IF YOU BIKE, BRING BIKES! This property lines up to some amazing trails and we were kicking ourselves for leaving ours at home. Definitely book a guided hike with Jason and the llamas - he has a wealth of knowledge on trail systems around the area or other things to do during your stay in Leadville. All-in-all, this camp is a no brainer if you're looking for a quiet weekend, a base camp for adventure, or just looking to get outside with the comforts of home.
Site 2 - Fir Tree Camp in Forest
in Harris Family Farm and Forest, CaliforniaBeautiful, scenic, delicious stay!
Such a unique and fun stay along the historic Pony Express! This multi-use land has been in Janes family for seven generations and is sure not to disappoint!
Whether it is biking on the nearby trail, driving off to the lake for a quick dip, picking an assortment of berries from the farm, or cozying up by the fire - you will have an amazing time here!
Jane was so gracious in sharing some family and area history with us as well, we learned a ton. They are just starting to clear out more campsite - so if you book this spot, choose which site works best for your party and get ready for an amazing stay.
Don't forget to leave without buying some jams, jellies, and pies all made fresh at the farm. If we are in the Tahoe area soon, I certainly will be back!
Alpine Valley /|\ Tahoe-Toiyabe NFs
in Alpine Valley /|\ Tahoe-Toiyabe NFs, CaliforniaA 4x4 challenge and adventure
Amazing views! With ~45 minute bumpy drive from Verdi - you will find yourself descending in to one of the most scenic and peaceful valleys in the area.
David, our host, was extremely helpful with directions and confidence our vehicles would be able to make the haul.
I cannot stress enough, a 4x4 is NEEDED for this camp - may even recommend you want/need a lift kit on your vehicle for some parts of the ascent in to the private parcel of land. Once there - you will find pull-offs and private camp spots lined along a peaceful stream.
With the lack of accessible camping around the Tahoe area - this adventure was a welcomed one. If we are back in the area, and if our rigs can still handle the route - we will definitely be back!

in Minie Ball, North CarolinaIf you are near Asheville and looking to camp, go out of your way to get here. Absolutely beautiful land, wish we could have stayed longer but enjoyed every second we were there.
