Kitts Marsh was exactly what I expected it to be; a perfect place to get away and spend a weekend alone, recharging and reflecting in a more natural way! I chose Kitts Marsh and set my expectations based on the reviews I read here so I'll do my best to be thorough.
After initially booking the trip, my point of contact, Marilyn was always available to answer any of my questions quickly and thoroughly.
When you arrive at the site, there is a tree-covered area to park your car along with a porta-potty that the hosts suggest you use in order to keep the cabin smelling fresh. I took their advice and found the porta-potty to be clean and well-maintained. It's also situated under the trees so even during the hottest part of the day, it remains cool which helps to keeps the typical odor from getting out of hand. There is a hand cart on which you can load your items and pull them from your car, down a short boardwalk, through the marsh, to the shanty itself.
Situated right on the bank of the Patuxent River the view from Kitts Marsh was, by far, my favorite part of the experience. A long pier walks you out over the sandy shore and river and offers an incredible panorama on which to feast your eyes. The site is totally private and secluded on all sides aside from some passing fishing boats and jet skis that keep such a distance they may as well not be there at all. There are two adult kayaks and one child's kayak, a large charcoal grill, glass dining table, and a picnic table, as well.
The shanty itself is modest and basic and boasts no luxurious bells or whistles which, for me, was an attractive characteristic. The one luxury the shanty does offer is electricity and in the middle of July, the four ceiling fans the shanty is equipped with (2 on each floor) come in very handy. If you decide to stay during the summer, I highly recommend bringing a personal table fan as well. The time I did spend in the shanty during the day I spent with my fan pointed directly at me. Without it, I think I would've been uncomfortable but with it, it was warm but pleasant. In addition, opening all of the windows and doors does let in an amazing breeze which also helps cool things down and fills the shanty with the wonderful smell of the marsh and river. The shanty is equipped with a kitchen/dining/living area on the first floor and a bedroom/bathroom on the second. The kitchen provides a mid/large dorm fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, hot plate (only one of the two burners were working), and an AM/FM radio. There is a small dining room table and two comfy chairs in the living area. There are a variety of supplies provided - pots, pans, plastic utensils, cleaning products, board/card games, tackle boxes, fishing rods, etc. - as well. If there's anything in particular you're wondering about the shanty having, I'm sure Marilyn will quickly and gladly let you know. The bedroom offers two beds - queen, I think - and a composting toilet (separated from the room proper with a shower curtain) that, again, the hosts ask you to use sparingly if possible to keep the house fresh. Keeping the bedroom windows open also help to keep the shanty cool during the day and night.
During my visit I took a trip to Calvert Cliffs state park (30 minutes away) to do some hiking and it was gorgeous.
I can't say enough about Kitts Marsh! From sitting around reading and writing to listening to the waves lap the little beach at dusk as I prepared dinner on the grill; to kayaking at sunset one night and listening to music at the edge of the pier enjoying the sunset the next, it was everything I wanted it to be. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
