in Shelter Cove Campground, CaliforniaCrowded sites in a beautiful place
I camped over Fourth of July Weekendâso crowds were expected going into the trip.
Pros: Very friendly on-site staff, clean facilities, on-site camp store, walking distance to ocean, brewery, and restaurant.
Cons: Objectively tight campsites. There was less than 6 feet of space between cars, rigs, and tents. I could reach out and touch my neighbor's rig from the inside of my rig... During my stay over the 4th weekend, quiet time was not enforced, but I expected that going into it.
In summary: This place would be great if the number of operable sites was thinned out on core holidays/weekends to give all guests a more enjoyable experience.
If visiting on a quiet weeknight outside of peak season, I'm sure you'll have a blast. If camping in a soft-sided rig, I'd suggest skipping any weekends during peak season.
Vintage 1985 VW (Choncho)
in Camp Electra in Mokelumne Hill, CaliforniaCommunal hangout in mokelumne hill
Camp Electra is the perfect place to hhangout after a day exploring in and around Mokelumne Hill. Your host, Ryan, has built an incredible outdoor bath house with a hot shower and a tankless toilet. The VW van makes for an easy accommodation and night outside under the stars. If you're looking for a place with a communal feel definitely checkout Camp Electra! We enjoy hanging out with Ryan's two friendly dogs, too. Pro-tip: Ryan has a second VW van available that he can drive down to the site for a little more room for groups or kids (Available as an "extra" during the booking process on Hipcamp)
Swallow Nest
in Estero San Antonio Wonderland, CaliforniaPeaceful retreat in west marin
I had such a peaceful overnighter on Guido's beautiful farm. The campsites are well spaced out and outfitted with picnic tables and firepits* (*only to be used when safe to do so) Definitely opt for the farm fresh Extras in checkout. The eggs, bacon, and breakfast sausages were all great!
Site 1 - Organic Cattle Ranch in West Marin
in Stemple Creek Ranch, CaliforniaBeautiful grove on private ranch
Perfect spot for a quick mid-week overnighter. I had the grove all to myself and enjoyed the peace and quiet. It was quite windy during my stay, so I had to park outside of the grove proper to avoid any falling branches. Was still pretty to be around. The washroom facilities are a far walk from the site, with that I'd say this site is best for fully self contained campers.
Dome Meadow Campsites
in Slide Ranch Campsites, CaliforniaMagical campsites overlooking ocean
Slide Ranch is one of the most beautiful (if not THE most beautiful) campsite in the Bay Area. The camping meadow is a fully dispersed tent-only area overlooking the pacific ocean and only a short (1/4 mile) hike from the parking area. Once you hike your gear into the site you'll find a dome shelter (for food prep) and a composting toilet in the meadow. There is no running water at the site which means no open flame stoves or bbqs allowed. (Slide Ranch is located with GGNRA) I camped on a weeknight and basically had the meadow to myself, only one other Hipcamper group was present. On weekends I'd expect less privacy and more of a communal feeling.
Airstream Coastal Bliss - Half Moon
in Tunitas Beach Overlook - Airstream, CaliforniaSecluded glamping with magical view
Dean's property is amazing. The airstreams are immaculate and the view incredible. The perfect glamping experience within a 30-ish minute drive of San Francisco. Highly recommend for a weeknight getaway!
Middle Fork Tuolumne River Camp
in Gumboot Placer Gold Claim, CaliforniaSpecial, peaceful spot for contained campers
I had such a relaxing and peaceful time at Kristopher's Gold Claim spot. Falling asleep to the sound of the river was the perfect end to a busy day in Yosemite National Park. Kristopher was an incredible Host who was easy to get ahold of and very communicative leading up to, during, and after my night outside at his spot. I would certainly Hipcamp here again! Note to other Hipcampers: this is a camping area for folks in self-contained rigs, which means there are no amenities, no potable water, and no toilet facilities. Overlanders/van lifers, you know the procedure. You must pack out all of your trash (yes even your human waste) If you're not comfortable or familiar with how do so I'd encourage you to seek out a spot on Hipcamp with amenities, toilets, etc. If you see trash during your visit please leave it better and pack it out. I picked up as much as I could!
Van / Small RV Pad 17 (20'D x 18'W)
in The Camp, OregonGood for a night with hardsided rig
Washroom facilities and grounds were all well maintained and clean. Being an RV Park in a metro area means traffic and city noise will be prevalent. Not a problem if you're in a hard sided rig â however I would bring ear plugs if you're in a soft sided rig or are a light sleeper. The place was full with a mix of road warriors, long distance travelers taking a break from highway, and what appeared to be some longer-term stays (The Camp allows stays of up to 45 nights at a time)
