Sunset Yurt
in Oz Farm, CaliforniaSite 1 - Baby Banana Slug Farm
in Baby Banana Slug Farm, CaliforniaGreat stay in the mendo redwoods
A great stay in the redwoods. Very restorative to see how a former clear cut logging site can contain so much tranquility. Forest bathing opportunities abound.
Two sites currently in operation, both quite private. We stayed at site 1, which is the one I would recommend. It is located at the far end of the property, has a large tent platform and a nifty fire pit that sits below a magnificent ghost redwood tree.
Running water in both sink and hose form is available. The outhouse is a simple composting structure perhaps 20 yards away--close but not too close.
Nathan was a great, unobtrusive host. We appreciated the hospitality of a basket of vegetables and fruit from the large garden on site delivered on our first night. In the near future, look out for a converted barn for those looking for more creature comforts--there's some stunning woodwork to enjoy in this spacious, rustic remodel.
Couple tips for future campers: bring TP for the outhouse and perhaps a folding table.
Oak Haven/ Branch Mill Organic Farm
in Branch Mill Organics, CaliforniaWavelength Farm - Garden site
in Wavelength Farm, CaliforniaKelan and team are building something quite special here. This is not necessarily a wilderness camping experience, but rather a farmstay with positive vibes abound in the perfect Mendocino location.
You camp at the bottom of a terraced garden, or diversified food forest as the Wavelength team likes to call it. Ample fields and pasture to explore with stunning views to the hills and coast. Dashi the farm dog only adds to the experience. Located just across the street from pristine Manchester State Park, there are miles of beaches and nearby trails to explore. We are eager to see how the experience will evolve as the team continues to develop this vast farm.
Definitely take Kelan up on his farm breakfast. We did and are already planning a return trip for a farm dinner. We took a CSA box for the road and felt great about seeing and supporting this new venture.
Site 3 - Columbia Flat
in Columbia Flat, CaliforniaGreat spot and hospitality. Angela and Jeff have built a really welcoming community that goes beyond just having a spot to pitch a tent.
Three G Familia Farm
in The 3 G Familia Farm, CaliforniaNot bad but overcrowded and not enough portapotties.
Sasquatch Meadows — Tent Only
in Clear Creek Ranch, CaliforniaFinding the site was a little trickier than we expected thanks to a misplaced Park Here sign and some site selection confusion upon arrival. Our confirmation had us booked in site #2 but the directions directed us to site #1. There were already guests at site #2, so we just set up camp in site #1. Site #1 is the more private of the two sites, so we didn't have a problem with this.
The site itself is relatively compact, with just enough space to pitch a five-person tent. Be aware of the abundant poison ivy and poison oak. It is everywhere and put a damper on exploring the surrounding bush. The mosquitoes are something fierce in the afternoon and evening. We sprayed ourselves with deet from head to toe and still walked away with a couple dozen bites each after just one night. Strangely enough, they were worse at the campsite than the water.
Restrooms are located in a simple outhouse with a flush toilet. There are two sinks that provide non-potable water. This was a nice surprise. The restroom was recently ravaged by a small animal that shredded whatever toilet paper remained into confetti. This, and the overflowing paper waste bucket, could definitely have used a cleaning by the landowners.
Going further afield, there is a great swimming hole right by Sasquatch Meadows, larger and deeper than the swimming area at Upper Falls. We also made the journey to Upper Falls and had the area to ourselves for a couple hours. A very peaceful spot with a couple flat rocks seemingly made for lounging (and yoga!). Other campers saw a rattlesnake on the path leading down to the falls so be aware.
