Hello friends! Thanks for your interest in Balsam Ridge Retreat! Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'. We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth. Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here! Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun. This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

These are comfortable, rustic cabins with NO running water (drinking water supplied). “Not "ADA" *Well-behaved, house-broken, supervised dogs, and older children welcome. *It helps us to know your ETA in advance and to update us so that we can plan our day as well! Once you are in the area, message us a bit before your arrival so we can meet you and set you up properly! If we miss you, follow the arrow on the wheelbarrow down the hill. Park at Dragon Loft at 1st right, and Raven Watch at very end of drive. *We have free range chickens and friendly border collie. Sometimes there's a dog staying at the other cabin. Wildlife is also in the area, so we require that dogs be supervised and leashed, for their safety, and our wild animal neighbors. No dogs may be left unattended in our cabins while you go out! Take your canine pal with you! Quiet hours: dusk to 7am. Also consider your dog's inclination for barking. We keep the peace and quiet of all of our guests in mind. *DRAGON LOFT has one double bed in a loft with steep ladder. Great for two people. Room for dog bed or kennel below the loft. Our yurt sits on the edge of a wild woods on the banks of the Cloquet River overlooking a meadow that is an active forest restoration project currently in process. From your door, you can access a loop of trails that wind through the woods, to the river and back to the yurt. Get back to basics. There is no electricity or running water in the yurt. Camp lanterns and solar lights are provided as is refillable fresh water and a propane camp stove/oven with pots/pans/utensils. The yurt is heated solely by a wood stove and there is plenty of firewood a short distance away with a sled or wagon to use for hauling. A campfire pit is just outside the yurt with a hanging grill and grilling tools. A detached outhouse is a short walk from the yurt and is for your use alone when you're here. In the winter, a Luggable Loo is available to bring to the yurt to eliminate trips at night in the cold to the outhouse. The yurt contains a queen bed with linens and a single camp cot available on request.  Dogs are welcome in the yurt! We charge a $25 pet fee per reservation. If you'd like to bring a dog or dogs (limit 2), please add the Pet Fee which is listed as an extra during the booking process. In the warm months, the river is great for swimming and fishing. (And Coming Soon: Kayaks, river tubes, and canoe availability pending the sorting of proper insurance.) In the winter, two pairs of snowshoes are included for quiet walks through the woods. *Note: Train sounds and some road noise can be heard from the yurt. The train has been described as "quite loud" by some guests and as sounding "off in the distance" and "pleasant" by others. The crossing is a half mile away. If you're sensitive to sounds, a light sleeper, or looking for complete and utter quiet, please take this into account. Ear plugs are also available in the yurt.

About this space The "Kick Back Tiny Shack" has a queen size bed, small futon bed (for a child) along with two single camp cots. This tiny house can sleep up to four people (2-3 most comfortably) depending on your needs. There is a mini fridge with mini freezer along with a mini gas range/oven, microwave, coffee pot and toaster. There is a TV and Wi-Fi. The cabin has a freestanding gas fireplace to keep you cozy and warm and air conditioning for the hot summer months. Come prepared to relax. This is a rustic cabin with all amenities so no need to pack up dishes, bedding, towels, etc. (bring sleeping bag and pillow for anything other than the queen size bed.) The kitchen is fully stocked with your basic cooking and dining essentials. If you don't want to do dishes you are welcome to bring your own paper plates, etc. Coffee, Salt, pepper, cooking spray, dish soap and hand soap, toilet paper and one roll of paper towels provided. There is not a well or city water, but you will be supplied with an electric pump faucet with 10 gallons of water for the kitchen sink for doing dishes, etc. There is also a pump faucet for the outhouse sink. You can heat water on the stove with the pot supplied. In addition, 1 to 2 gallons of drinking water will be supplied depending on the length of your stay. There is a heated outhouse next to the cabin which has a shower stall in which you can shower with 120 gallons of water and on demand water heater. Towels are provided and if you need more water, you can contact us, and we can refill at our home which is located next door. Please allow notice in case we are not home at the time. The contact information will be provided with your booking confirmation. You have your own private yard on our 6 acres with a BBQ pit in the summer months, firepit and grill off of the back deck year-round. If you chose to bring a four-wheeler, canoe, boat or snowmobile there is plenty of parking space depending on the quantity. Snowmobiles and side by sides are available for rent 3 miles up the road from the cabin. Come and unwind or explore the many wonders that the Northwoods has to offer! The interior of the cabin is newly refinished. The exterior will be improved as time goes by. No unauthorized guests or pets as a fee may be added and Airbnb does not cover this.

I enjoyed my stay in the mini coop. It was perfect for me, and I received the reset I needed. I highly recommend Linda's property! I have 2 more sites to visit and I can't wait.

The Gokotta is most definately my favorite of all the sites I've stayed at! It's quiet, it's secluded, it's peaceful, yet it's still just around the corner from everyone.

Unless you have stayed at Balsam Ridge before, you simply don't truly know what to expect when you arrive. Pictures, descriptions & reviews from others simply don't do justice for what you truly experience. Balsam Ridge is a place you have to spend time at yourself to fully take in and understand why this place is so highly reccommended, loved and appreciated by so many people. Once you enter the site, you completely forget you are actually still withing the limits of the city because it feels like true country! The peace, tranquility, & comfort it brings it like no other place I've ever been. Chris and Linda go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable during your stay and take care of you as if you are "home". They sincerely care about their guest and value them and their feedback and always make themselves available at all times. If you are ever in neen of a place to stay while in Duluth - I promise you - Balsam Ridge would not disapoint you!

The mini coop is a great place to stay! It may be SMALL but it’s a perfect spot for two people! There is also a lot of privacy from the other sites that are on the property. The owners are also super kind and helpful! Highly recommend!

Staying in the yurt was amazing and cozy! Instructions were clear and helpful. Even on warm days it stayed comfortable. There is one lamp, so if staying there during shorter days, bring a battery operated light or lantern. A fun experience living lightly off the grid. Be sure to get the garden cart first to help unload your vehicle. We had zero cell connection- a landline is provided.

A fun first ever stay in a yurt! This site made our visit to Apostle Islands NPS so easy; it let us enjoy Bayfield during the couple days we had without worrying about as much set up and tear down as traditional tent camping. We loved the quiet nights, the space to cook and eat, and the ability to get to town quickly. Be prepared for mosquitoes in the outdoor spaces.

Staying at the Roost was awesome! Linda and Chris welcomed us as we arrived, gave a tour of the property, and gave great ideas on throngs or places to experience. The Roost is definitely small, so be prepared for that. That being said, we had a fantastic time at the Roost. It’s a quick drive to Duluth and a great place to recover in a quiet area after a long day out! Thanks for a great weekend!

This site was beautiful and tranquil. There is a creek full of life and a gorgeous wildflower meadow. Charming sounds of frogs and birds can be heard. Very relaxing and pleasant.

Had the absolute Best Time here!! Linda and her Husband were the absolute sweetest and most welcoming hosts. Me and my other Teen friend came here to Glamp and it was a very nice and Safe area. The stove was very easy to figure out and use after a fire was started. Very easy and convenient. It felt secluded in the best way!! The site is very close to town and Lake Superior!! The Bathroom we were told to use was VERY clean! There is also a Community Space by the pond with plenty of Activities! There are a Variety of hiking trails and they were so Beautiful and easy to stay on the trail and find your way back thanks to the tree markers and Lindas Handy map!! Overall such an amazing experience and we will 100% be back next summer!! thank you Linda!! ❤️❤️❤️

Weekend Trip to Off Grid Auroras

We had a great time at Kyle's rustic cabin. The off-grid solar made cooking a breeze. It was so nice to have hot showers too. It was close to the things that we wanted to visit like Black Beach and Iona Beach, yet still felt private and remote. Google maps took us straight to it and Kyle's directions were spot on. The waterless toilet took a little get it used to, but it was nice to have. We did have a little bit of a challenge finding a place to take our garbage when we left, but after searching a bit, we found a campground that accepted it.

Weekend Trip to Northern Lights Cabin

We were out adventuring so we barely spent any time at the cabin but it was everything we needed for a landing place at the end of each day! I appreciated the host's taste in books and coffee mugs 🖤 We had a little trouble finding it in the dark the first night (the mailbox being around the corner confused us lol) but arrive when it's still light and you should have no problem! Eric also responded right away to make sure we found it ok which was much appreciated. We loved the outdoor shower and I was grateful for the kettle to make tea each night. Thanks so much!
