Running Water Creek is a unique, fully off grid campground just 20 minutes to downtown Chattanooga. We have 80+ campsites spread out over 120 acres. Most of the roads are accessible in any small car, but some roads require 4x4 (they're marked with a sign). We have a bath house with toilets, showers, and sinks and even offer hot water! Our well and cabins are all solar-powered as we are not on the electric grid. Some info about the property: -we DO NOT have water or power hookups -we have gravel roads with a 5 MPH speed limit on the property (if you drive too fast the roads will seem rough) -we are right next to a highway and train tracks so there will be some noise (some days are better than others and we have no way of predicting how many trains will/will not go by) -none of our campsites have picnic tables (please plan accordingly) -most campsites have fire rings built, but if you choose a site without one you need to build your own

Relax on the side of the Cumberland Plateau while overlooking Burroughs Cove and the Elk River. You can see the camp sites from the main road, so there will be some road noise. Sites 1/2 are hard/large graveled, tent camping will be very challenging, heavy duty tent stakes are highly recommended with mats/padding. There is an electrical box at each end of the hard graveled parking areas (Sites 1 and 2) with 20- and 30-amp plugs, plus 110v. If the power is not working, please check the panel and turn on/reset the breakers, many of our guests turn them off when departing. If you are at Site #2 and the steps above do not work, please check/do the same at the Site #1 panel (it is the master power source). Water is NOT available on site. NOTE: Depending on the time of year (warmer months only) a water container with a limited amount of NON-POTABLE water is on site for your use. Please plan on filling your water reservoir(s) PRIOR to arriving. There is an outhouse for all guests, picnic tables and fire rings for Sites 1 and 2. The camping area is fairly close to SR-50 so please expect to hear some road noise, more so in the winter months. The entrance/driveway is on a small incline, if you are traveling in a light vehicle and a heavy camper, it's best to maintain a slow and steady speed to the camp site (for almost everyone, this is not an issue). If you are towing a camper, we recommend the total length of the vehicle and the trailer not exceeding 30ft, There is not a significant place to "turn around" at the sites and novice drivers (not used to backing out of tight spots with longer rigs) may find this very challenging. There is a double gate that is usually closed, and latched so it stays closed, it is not "locked". The site is self-serve (not manned), Site #1 is to the left, Site #2 is to the right, and Site #3 is down the path past the outhouse at the bottom of the path. It is recommended that campers set up early for Site 3 (still daylight) to get an idea of the layout. Parking for Site #3 is by the shed at the main entrance and power is not available at the site.

We intentionally leave some of our fields uncut. In some fields, the grass can come up above the knees. If you are picky with the grass, these are pastures on a farm and we do not cut them. We leave that to the animals to take care of. All of our staff are super friendly and happy to help guide you to the best camping spot and answer any questions. In searching for your campsite please note that there may be livestock in and around certain areas as we rotate pastures. We only stayed one night at the tent but loved every minute! Grant called before we arrived to give us directions to the site so we would be prepared when we arrived in the dark. Everything was easy to find, just as he said. The trampoline was more comfortable than we expected! Bring extra towels in case of condensation. The area under the trampoline was perfect for food prep and hanging out. Above all, the waterfall was BEAUTIFUL! The short “hike” from the tent to the falls was easy for us and our German Shepherd to navigate. We had a wonderful time- can’t wait to return!

The yurt had a small blow up mattress, which was a plus because it wasn’t listed in the description (at least to my memory). The land was absolutely beautiful, and he took the time to make sure we got to our yurt safely. Made my friend and I feel incredibly safe as two young women traveling alone together. We loved staying on Robby’s land. He was friendly, and met us at the gate to give us some directions and details about the campsite. The campsite had 6 spots, and most of the were concentrated on one side of the field, so you may be close to others if you choose on of those. We had no one around us, and aside from the occasional train passing by, it was very peaceful. We had great views of the night sky and saw a few shooting stars while we were out. Plenty of space, good access to a bathroom. We had to walk out a bit to get some firewood, but that wasn’t a difficult endeavor. We all had a great time and would stay here in the future.

This was a camping trip I'll never forget. William was such a kind and hospitable man, his property was nothing short of breathtaking. This place was a great escape from 9-5 city life and I can't wait to return. Don't ignore other reviews about how steep the small trek up to the shack is! It's a short walk but very steep and uneven/rocky ground. Make sure you wear good shoes/boots! Rocket and Bo 🐕 we're the sweetest dogs and great company when they weren't busy chasing squirrels. I very much enjoyed the hike along an old logging road on Will's land, about 1.5 miles and took me less than an hour at a slow pace, saw deer tracks and the deer that left them about half-way through. It was such a beautiful and peaceful hike; I wish I looped back around to make longer! There were no mosquitoes or ticks to be seen but be prepared for lots of Chinese lady beetles (look like lady bugs but are very invasive and annoying!) And stink bugs, if you come in the fall or spring. The shack had bedding, an amazing wood stove, cooking/art supplies, books and much more. Again, Will was so gracious and hospital. He checked in on me by msg in the mornings, showed me around his woodworking studio and informed me about his property and animals. His artwork is truly something else, the man is a real artist and beautiful soul. I bought a cutting board and Will picked me some greens from his garden before I left. I would highly recommend staying here and can't wait to return myself!

I love this campground. The benefits are numerous starting with the location to Nooga, the clean water of the river, farm fresh eggs right down the street, and last but not least, a wolf on sentry. Seriously, Ava is super sweet and the rest of the pack are apparently super social as well. The hosts are proud of their campground with good reason. There's a lot to offer here! Have fun with the time zones! Honestly, that kept us on our toes!

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Reservations are required for both Foster Falls and the backcountry. Booking in advance is recommended.
  2. Bookings can easily be secured online or by phone, up to one year in advance.
  3. Double-check your dates: Booking fees are non-refundable.

When to go

South Cumberland State Park is open year-round but most visitors are drawn to the park in the summer, when temperatures are typically in the low 80s, to take advantage of its swimming spots, including creeks and lakes. Spring and fall are also attractive times of year, promising cooler temperatures on the trails and migrating birds. Winter temperatures are typically in the mid to high 40s.

  • Campfires must only be made with heat-treated wood (for sale in the park) or downed wood collected inside the park, near the campsite. Bringing untreated wood into the park is prohibited.
  • Detailed trail maps can be found at the seasonal South Cumberland Visitor Center, the Stone Door Ranger Station, and the Savage Gulf Ranger Station.
  • Black bears are present in the park, so visitors should take precautions.
