The Ranch has many varied sites to explore from oak woodlands to pine covered woods. The ownership of the land has been held since 1883 by the Summit Lime Company and was until the 1930's the site of several lime quarries one of which was used to supply material for the Owens valley to Los Angeles aquaduct. Current utilization is for recreation, private hunting club, timber production, and cattle grazing. The campground was built in 1967 to provide a location for church, non-profit, and youth groups to enjoy a private, and safe location for outdoor recreation activities. Camping is restricted to family and group activities. The campground has 17 sites a comfort station, water hook-ups, fire ring, and 4X8 foot stone BAR-B-Que. In order to provide a private experience no two groups are scheduled at the same time. An ideal group size is 15 to 150 persons.

We are the largest Arabian horse rescue in the United States. We are on 100 acres, but are currently using only 10 fenced acres for our horses. We have an average of 75 horses on our property. Most live in larger areas or paddocks in group "herds". We focus on rehabilitation and training with the goal of finding permanent homes for our horses. However, we have about 30+ horses who are "sanctuary horses", either because they are older, or were traumatized, or have health issues, thus will not be rideable. We have a working gold mine across the street, that can be hiked up to, to a certain point. We have lots of desert trails surrounding us. Activities: Learn about horses and help at the horse rescue, feeding and watering, giving horses treats. All proceeds from your camping on our property goes to support the horses at our rescue.

Local markets also sell neck gaiters for face protection. I also have pieces of plywood with bricks that you're welcome to move and shift to fit your needs. I am in the process of building a tree/shrub wind block. There's about .4 miles of dirt road to get to the property, there are some dips to watch out for but I come out here in a little Prius so it's manageable. Overall, there is an element of seclusion but occasionally people do drive by on the dirt road. I would rate the cell phone service a 7/10, it's pretty solid but can go out at times.

Weekend Trip to A Unique Mountain Retreat

I had a lovely time with my dog on John’s beautiful property. We absolutely loved the beautiful views from the cabin. John was beyond kind and accommodating, especially when I had an emergency and had to leave a day early. He helped me to make sure that everything was OK and I have already received my refund for the day that I had to leave early, which was beyond generous I can’t wait to go back to the cabin with my whole family again soon.

What a beautiful space they have! The campsite and tipi have everything you would want, and Bill and Robin’s property itself is so creatively and thoughtfully designed to be both sustainable and beautiful. Somehow, sleeping in the tipi felt almost luxurious. And the horses and their calming equine energy is an added bonus :).

Weekend Trip to Double Triangle Ranch

Lovely, quiet, and spacious site not far from Lake Isabella. The hosts were warm and accommodating, and the site steward was prompt and friendly. The shower was a welcome amenity after long days of hiking in the hills or swimming at the lake, and the view of the sunset from the hill next to the site is not to be missed! Overall a wonderful experience, and we would return in a heartbeat.

Weekend Trip to Okihi- Reimagining The Kern River

My kids and I had a wonderful time visiting Okihi. We camped in a tent for one night on our long voyage from the Bay Area to Las Vegas. Katherine was extremely friendly and hospitable, she pointed out a native plant (stinging nettle) that my kids should avoid and put out carrots for them to feed the horse. My daughter loved visiting the animals. We relaxed in the hammocks for a bit, then dipped our toes in the kern river before heading back to our camp. There was an owl in the tree above our tent which I found to be extremely magical. Didn’t expect to have such a pleasant experience in nature based on the oil rigs you see on the drive in, but we truly did. Grateful they open their gates to people like us who need an affordable place to stop on our way through town and offer use of their entire property.

2 nights at Lone Juniper Ranch

We loved staying at The Bobcat cabin. It was very relaxing and quiet, a beautiful landscape. I highly recommend to stay here a night or 2 to wind down. The cabin had everything you’ll need, just bring your food. Be aware the 2 cabins are close together. There was a llama enclosure a few feet away, it was lovely to look at and watch the animals from the cabin. The hosts are responsive and nice. Thank you for this wonderful experience, we plan to be back.

Weekend Trip to Desert Stargazers Dream

Pros: quite close to LA and while it isn’t the darkest sky, you’re still able to see so many stars and meteors. Very isolated area where we did not see nor hear from a single soul during our time there. We really enjoyed cowboy camping under the stars and counting all the meteors we saw. Some spotty service with only the occasional SOS. Cons: 4WD is necessary. Drive slow, follow the directions, have offline maps and directions downloaded. Be prepared to possibly get stuck in sand and have the appropriate tools to get yourself out. The links in the message from the host are broken. The painted rocks/lines noted in the directions are difficult to locate and should consider a different means to determine where to park on the site as well as outlining where the fire pit is. Myself and the camp managed just fine, but be sure to allocate a lot of time to do those things before dark. Unfortunately, the host was not reachable during our time there, but we made the booking last minute so not a huge fault that the host was without service during that time. All in all, would come out again, just would be better prepared with regards to our arrival time.

We had a beautiful stay at Spirit Walk. John welcomed us warmly and took the time to introduce us to the land, which immediately made us feel at home. Everything is thoughtfully maintained while still offering a sense of privacy, peace, and safety. We found so many little points of connection during our stay, and quickly understood why this place feels so special. There really is something about the trees, the water, the quiet, and the care here. We left feeling more connected to ourselves, each other, and the land. If you’re curious, give Spirit Walk a shot and see the magic for yourself. ✨

Weekend Trip to The Hideout - 100+ Acres Oak Trees

We had another great stay camping on the field! The weather was perfect for summer, warm and breezy during the day and even slightly chilly overnight. Stargazing was wonderful including catching a few shooting stars. Little trails on site continue to be calming to explore. We appreciated the generous shade of the tree canopy. Plenty of insect life around but not uncomfortable (note: we encountered a few wasps/hornets but had no issue once food removed). Clean porta potty. Rachel is kind and great to communicate with. This may be our go-to campsite for a quick, local private getaway outdoors.

I can’t say enough how much we enjoy staying in the Studio cabin. This is a good place for stargazing in the fresh mountain air. We love it here, John has made his property a wonderful getaway,

Plenty of room to explore. Take some time to relax on one of the swinging benches, or climb atop the pontoon and star gaze at night. Also, seening a moonrise over the hills was incredible. And this is just on the property! Take your time and explore the land beyond the gates. We'll definitely be coming back. FYI, bring plenty of shade during the summer.

With no camping available, the park offers a unique day-use experience filled with learning and adventure.

When to go

The ideal times to visit Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park are during the spring and fall when the park offers guided tours. These seasons offer moderate temperatures perfect for exploring the park's trails and historical sites. Summer and winter visits are less advisable due to extreme weather conditions that may impact the tour schedules.

Know before you go

Guided tours are mandatory to visit the park; advance reservations are required and can be made by calling (661) 248-6692.
Prepare for a moderately strenuous walking tour lasting about three hours, with an overall duration of four hours including orientation.
High clearance vehicles are recommended for the drive to the park from the orientation point in Tehachapi.
Service animals are welcome, but please note that dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted.
Remember to respect the park's protected features; collecting artifacts or natural objects is prohibited without a permit.
