Loved camping at this site with my friends. There was a ton of space and we were so close to everything we wanted to do. The property backs up to BLM land so if you step out the back gate you’re able to hike beautiful peaks. There’s a pontoon feature that provides great shade, a perfect place to hang a hammock, and stunning views. There’s property is just five minutes from the lake and nature preserve where we fished all week. Mark was a great host and answered all questions leading up to the trip. This was a trip for my best friends bachelor party and was the perfect spot for our group. Couldn’t have been happier. Will definitely be back with my wife soon. Thanks Mark!

My group loved tent camping here at wandering star ranch! The property is huge and BLM land is incredibly close! This spot is absolutely amazing if you like off roading and shooting! We brought our dirt bike and had a BLAST!! There is a little shooting range up the hill too! The lake is close enough to go fishing too and if you run out of any supplies there is a market and gas station close by as well! The restroom was clean but there were a few black widows in there so make sure you bring something along to remove them! Mark was a great host! He was quick with responses and very helpful! We added firewood and the soak tub to our trip and mark set it all up very quickly! We will most definitely be back to camp here again!!

I loved camping at wandering star ranch! Beautiful campground, plenty of space to explore. The views of lake Isabella were amazing! The concrete pad and pontoon boat made excellent locations to cook dinner and relax.
Booking, checking in, checking out were all straight forward and easy.
Toilet was clean.
Will for sure be returning in the future!

My friends and I tent camped here for the long weekend and had the best time! Super easy to spread out yet still be together. Excessible to a lot near by and the perfect little get away to go on a hike or fish.

This is our third time staying with Mark and every time Mark is a great host and makes sure we have what we need to make our stay even a better one. We love coming here for the peace and quiet of the mountains and outdoors. The entire place is for your self or your group and if you have Atvs it’s always a safe place to ride up the hills.

Mark's place was FANTASTIC. We had originally booked some sites at Headquarters Campground, but they had placed fire restrictions last min, so we decided to book the Wandering Star Ranch.
Exceptional place to play your music loud, cackle with your friends around the fire, and let your dogs run wild. Not a ton of shade, so make sure you have your pop up tents. No potable water, so make sure to bring that, too! Only 30 mins from Kern River Brewing Co. and popular trailheads.

We had an amazing experience at this campsite! The site is huge, and the vibes were perfect for a relaxed getaway. We were able to play music at night without any disturbances, which was a big plus. While there aren’t many trees for shade, it wasn’t an issue for us since we drove down to a nearby waterfall during the day, or you can plan to visit at cooler times. We were there at the end of August, which I think is the hottest time of the year.
One thing to watch out for: Google Maps took us down a sandy road, and we ended up getting stuck in the sand for over an hour. Thankfully, the campsite owner, Mark, was incredibly helpful and got us out. He was so attentive and made sure we had a smooth stay overall.
We’ll definitely be coming back!

We had a large group of adults camping here and it was so much fun! Plenty of space, lots of tables and fire pits, and the pontoon boat was such a nice touch. Porta potty was great to have too. We were there during a heat wave but spent the majority of the day at Kern River and enjoyed the warm nights at the campsite. Mark gave us some recommendations for the river and lake and was a great host!

Wandering Star had SO much space for all of our friends to drive up in separate cars and have a good distance between tents. The lil boat set up was great for views of the lake & stargazing. It got pretty windy a few nights so I recommend posting up your tent near a structure/large bushes to help break the wind. We did see some snakes so make sure to keep your kids and pups safe.
Nonetheless—We had a blast and Mark’s instructions were helpful. We didn’t need his help for anything during our stay but he let us know he could swing by if something did come up. We were a close drive to the lake & close to a market/gas station which was definitely nice. Also, the porty was clean.

Great view, lots of space, and total privacy. Firewood on site for a reasonable price, but there’s also a general store nearby with all the essentials, beer, ice, etc. We had some rain and heavy wind during our stay, but it made for some great stories. Also has a haunted storage shed. Overall 10/10, would camp here again.

The host was incredibly nice and we had an awesome time. Super close to a really gorgeous hike with beautiful views of the lake. Short drive to convenience store and the lake. Overall, we had a great experience. It did get pretty hot during the day and windy but we honestly lucked out pretty well with the weather.

It was awesome being able to ride our dirt bikes and quads out to the BLM from the property and we got to do some shooting at the shooting range as well which is a super short walk/drive. The views of the sunset/sunrise and the lake from the property are amazing. Our stay was amazing and we hope to be back soon.

This is our second time at The Wandering Stars. We love it and Mark is a great host. Plus place is super clean and has different outdoor areas in the lot for the kids to play on. We can’t wait for our next time to come here. Hot springs are close by and Lake Isabella too if you love fishing. We love the view and the OHV trail. One of the best hipcamps we have found. Can’t wait for our next family gathering here.

Wandering Star was fantastic. The property was beautiful and had plenty of space for our group to camp. It is just a short way from town if you need anything, but butts up against BLM land making it feel even more expansive and provides great access for hiking or exploring. Highly recommend!

We had a great time at the Wandering Star Ranch celebrating my birthday with a group of about 10. Lots of Sun, so we brought easy-ups for more shade. Lots to explore in the area. We went up to Kern River to swim, and did some dirt biking both from camp and also loaded the bikes in the trucks and drove over to “Just Outstanding” trail. The camp spot is huge, so we had plenty of room to spread out. It’s a great option to explore the area and have some privacy and not be camp next to a bunch of other groups of people. The farm fresh eggs were a nice touch, and made for a delicious breakfast!

Just a short drive from Kernville and directly adjacent to beautiful lake Isabella, Wandering Star Ranch is well-situated for relaxation or waterborne adventure.
Peaceful and enjoyable describes our stay at Wandering Star Ranch. During our short visit, my husband and I set up tent in the quiet solitude offered at this open-sky Hipcamp. The camping plot was well-maintained, and offered nice places to kick back and relax as well as plenty of space to roam. Equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, and access to a simple toilet facility, this Hipcamp offered the essentials for an enjoyable night of tent lodging.
The views at Wandering Star Ranch are picturesque and diverse. Each corner of the property offers a unique, beautiful view of mountain landscapes.
If you find yourself in the area, and in need of a ruggedly beautiful, low-key spot to rest, Wandering Star Ranch is a nice option. Thank you for sharing your Hipcamp with us!

We enjoyed staying at Mark's property! It was so nice to have so much space just to ourselves. We brought our dogs and our kitten and they all enjoyed themselves very much too. The outhouse was very clean and the fresh eggs were awesome. Lake Isabella is very low but the Kern River was great out of Kernville (about 20 min from the property). Our dogs swam and so did our kitten! Would definitely come back.

Very spacious and private - suited all our needs…tent camping, trailer camping, off-road motorcycles, dogs, campfire, playing music till late into the evening (as there was nobody around to disturb, given it sits on 18 acres), and the clean outhouse was a bonus!
Mark is a great host and very accommodating. The weather was unusually hot and he brought over his water truck and filled our 200-gallon kiddie pool, which was very much appreciated!
Definitely recommend Mark’s place and will stay there again

We had 16 humans camping on Mark's land. He was friendly and very accommodating. We visited during a heatwave and Mark was kind enough to provide a small "pool" for the kids. His land was peaceful, spacious, and quite. We would definer visit again.

Awesome property! Backs right up to OHV trail and walking trails. Great set up for campfire. It did get windy but other than that great spot. Dogs had a blast. Will come again with more friends!

Wandering Star is a great property and Mark was a fantastic host. He was very responsive to any questions we had and dropped off some fresh eggs for us that were very tasty. The property itself is quite spacious and secluded feeling with plenty of different spots for your party to set up camp. We had a large party of tent campers who spread out over several of the sites and used a couple different fire pits. It is quite peaceful and quiet but we didn’t feel like we had to worry about our noise carrying to neighbors either.
Town may only be a few minutes away but you’ll feel like you’re in the wilderness for sure. Some hipcamps can feel like you’re just camping in somebody’s yard. Here, you’ll feel like you’re away from it all. You’ll hear coyotes at night and maybe see some critters too.
There is firewood available on site and the porta-potty is very clean and well maintained - though it is a porta potty. If you need a shower and potable water that’s a thing you’ll have to figure out for yourself. This isn’t glamping. It’s about as close to ‘real’ camping as you get without hiking in.
The stars are spectacular. The moon didn’t come up for us until 2am, and the light pollution from town is almost non existent, so it was pitch black after the sun went down and we had a fantastic view of the night sky.
Also, it is very close to the lake and hiking trails and there are a lot of great things to see and do in the area.

Wandering Star Ranch is so beautiful, and huge!! 15 acres you can have all to yourself, or invite some friends to camp. Very clean porta potty. No potable water, but a small grocery store is just down the road. We were shooting a short horror film there, and it suited our needs very well. We could make as much noise as we wanted, as late as we wanted. There is plenty of firewood available for purchase, as well as the best eggs I’ve ever had in my life. And we felt very safe. A couple things to watch out for - there are black widow spiders and scorpions out at night. Possibly snakes too. But as long as you are aware, it’s all just part of being out in nature. Our group of seven had a wonderful time.

We had a wonderful time here. Mark was very informative and helpful. He even helped us find a dump station to use when we were finished. The property was just as described. We took our side by sides right out the back gate and explored and were able to let the kids ride around the property on thier own. The kids were able to go exploring the property all by themselves too and had a blast, so did the dog :-)
The only struggle we had was leveling the RV's. Smaller ones would probably be fine but the bigger ones 35' and longer, took some extra time and relocating a couple times to find a flat enough area to get the jacks on the ground, so bring extra blocks.
All in all it was successful fun trip and I would recommend this site to others!
