Big Sky Vistas

10 sites · RVs, Tents20 acres · Columbus, MT
Peaceful and quiet surrounded by lots of wildflowers, wildlife, and the pleasant aroma of sagebrush. Parking area is reasonably flat. Remote subdivision on 4500-foot ridge, 10 miles from Columbus exit 408, off of Interstate 90. Your camping spot is near the road for easy access, but the road is private and dead-ends just beyond my property, so traffic is very minimal. I aim to treat all my guests as if you were a long-time friend. I try to be your personal concierge, so anything you need or want to know, just ask.

The best camping near Cooney Reservoir State Park guide

Overview

About

Join the Great Migration west—to Cooney State Park, that is, where it might just feel like everyone and their grandmother has ventured for the weekend. But Cooney’s got plenty of mountain views to go around, and you sure won’t be left wondering why Montana’s called Big Sky Country here. Fish for walleye and rainbow trout, sail or motor across the endless reservoir, or plop down on the beach with your camera. We promise any photograph taken here will be your desktop background for the next five years, minimum. Cooney State Park doesn’t believe outdoor fun should be left to the summer months. It’s the ideal winter training camp for snowshoe or ice fishing enthusiasts, far away from the busy summer crowds.

Notable campgrounds

  • Marshall Cove Campground: Offers metered showers and a selection of campsites with stunning reservoir views.
  • Red Lodge Arm: Features a convenient fish cleaning station and boat ramps, perfect for anglers and boaters alike.
  • Lake Shore Campground: Enjoy easy access to water activities with campsites nestled along the reservoir's edge.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak summer months, as sites at Cooney State Park fill up quickly due to its popularity.
  • Consider mid-week stays for better availability and a quieter camping experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations, which can provide last-minute opportunities for a coveted spot.
  • Explore nearby camping options to ensure you have a backup plan if the park's campgrounds are fully booked.

When to go

The prime time to visit Cooney Reservoir State Park is between May 15 and September 27, when the park's full suite of amenities, including drinking water and showers, are available. Winter brings ice fishing and a serene, frosty landscape, but prepare for cold conditions and limited facilities.

Know before you go

  • Check for any special restrictions or closures before your visit, especially during extreme weather conditions.
  • Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all park visitors.
  • Accessibility is a priority, with ADA accessible facilities available for those with disabilities.
