1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. This is an incredibly historic site in Santa Barbara history. 2 tribes of Chumash Indians lived here for 10,000 years. This is where Spain landed and began colonizing the area. In the 1950's and 60's, this was the site of the World's largest orchid farm. There is a book called The Royal Rancho, if you are a history buff.
We are a farm on the beach just North of Santa Barbara and Goleta, Ca. You will camp in a historic, glass greenhouse with incredible ocean views. Inside is a cob pizza oven that works awesome. (Bring your own firewood),,, a place to pitch tents and tiny artistic structures to explore. You will have a private bath and shower (Primitive, no electricity, but the hot shower has the best view in the world of any shower!) Bring your own toiletries and whatnot.
Private beach access from our property. We have a barnyard with a multitude of farm animals. Limited electricity in greenhouse (A couple of extension chords). The fire ban is ONLY for open campfires. The pizza oven and YOUR bbq or propane flame is fine.
If you are camping during the rain, be advised, it gets wet in the greenhouse. It's an antique after all!

This is our home but we love to share our life in the outback. We believe it will give you a better appreciation of life's simpler side. That being said, and to maintain the balance here at home, we'd appreciate if you keep your dogs in your car until you get to your site.
Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**
Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. Just to name a few, about 20 miles east is Alison Canyon Park; About 30 miles east off highway 33 is OHV recreation area, Ballinger Canyon; About 35 miles east off Hudson Ranch Road is the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge; About 60 miles north off Soda Lake Road is the Carrizo Plain National Monument; About 12 miles west is the Chimineas Ranch Ecological Reserve; and, about 60 miles east off highway 166 is Wind Wolves Preserve.

The grant has since been divided, but large pieces of land still remain, mostly inhabited by mountainous wildlife, ground squirrels, rabbits, coyotes and cattle. This area is also rich in Chumash history. Million-dollar views of the Caliente Mountain Range await you for evening sunsets and the Sierra Madre Mountain Range await you for your morning coffee enjoyment. Don't miss the brilliance of the famous Cottonwood Canyon Wildflowers with your front row seat. For your comfort, there is a 16x20 rustic-style shade structure (which has also been used for a dance floor!), water spigot, fire pit, small BBQ, and an outhouse. We have oak firewood available for purchase and a larger BBQ capable of cooking for 200+ guests available for rent, if needed. Beautiful natural campsites in the Valley of the Moon (Ojai Valley). Our sites are within an eighth of a mile of walking, running, biking, and riding trails from Ojai to the beaches of Ventura. On many days you can experience Ojai’s famous pink moments. You can hike the trails above Ojai, boat, eat, or picnic at Lake Casitas. Travel to nearby Ventura to shop, fish the pier, or take a deep sea fishing charter or Island charter to Whale watch or fish around the Channel Islands.
Please note the aerial view of the camping area recently placed by Hipcamp is NOT AT ALL REPRESENTATIVE of the current camping sites and shows a photo that is many years old when the site was merely land.
That photo is without any of the existing amenities or improvements. The actual sites are all Larger than Federal Park and Statepark guidelines, with averages of 20'x30' for campsites and 20'x40' for a long RVCampsite.
We have planted many young trees and continue to plant trees and native shrubs around and near the sites. We have picnic tables, table coverings, fire pits, and camping rugs/footprints. There is also an outdoor shower, a shower tent with hot water, and an upgraded porta-potty with a sink.
Note: During times when high heat is predicted, we strongly recommend that our Hipcampers bring pop-up shade tents or canopies for their sites.
The Hipcamp is adjacent to our working ranch, and any photos of old sheds, trucks, a wood lot, or other equipment are NOT on the Hipcamp, but you will drive past that property to get to the separate Hipcamp area.
Wineries, Farmer's Markets, Craft Breweries, dispensaries, and more are within 10 to 15 minutes of our site. Our location allows moments when you may see Hawks, Owls, Geese, Swallows, Robins, Bluebirds, and more.

5 nights at North Fork Ranch (Horses Welcome)
I stayed in this cozy, self‑contained space for a few days of rest and writing. The privacy was excellent, and support was always just a moment away whenever I needed it. The bed was comfortable, and the shower was fantastic. Although the fridge was small for a longer stay, that’s a minor issue—I’ll be better prepared next time. This getaway spot is truly worth it.
From the front door, I walked to the trailhead and hiked a gentle 2.5‑mile ascent alongside a snowmelt creek. The effort was rewarded with an amazing view of the valley I’d just walked up.
Will utilize again and try the food on offer next time.

This is a beautiful place. It was my second visit, and was just amazing this year because of previous rain (I think). There was snow on a nearby peak, green hills, wildflowers, happy birds: a paradise for nature lovers. I hated to leave and hope to return soon.

Car camping was perfect here. Sadly, we arrived at 8pm but the night time vibes at the fire pit were so relaxing! Wish we had booked when it wasn't so muddy from the recent rain, but now we know for next time! Def want to go back when its dry, that way we don't have to leave early due to rain interference. The chickens eating out of the palm of our hand and letting us pet them were definitely the highlight!

My fiance and I stayed here with our two dogs and it’s was perfect! There was an option to sleep on the lower bed or upper and we did the lower and it was so comfortable. The host makes you feel right at home and we couldn’t believe how beautiful the property is. The camp spots are big and the views of the rolling green hills make you feel like you’re in other world. Highly recommend and we are already looking to book again next month

My wife and I had such an incredible time at Freedog Farms! Sierra, Darin, and Garrett were all so friendly and accommodating and really made us feel welcome. We knew we made the right decision when they immediately offered us drinks and took us and our dogs on a UTV tour of the whole property, which is incredibly charming and very private. We had a great time and will definitely be coming back!

Weekend Trip to Cuyama Badlands
My partner and I spent Valentine’s Day weekend at the Songdog Ranch in their water tank site. It was very private and the host, Jenny, was extremely accommodating! The site was stocked with an ample amount of firewood, drinking water, kitchen utensils/ cookware and chairs. It was quite cold in the evening, the water tank has a space heater that worked well in keeping the chill at bay. The road to the Hipcamp was extremely bumpy, just a heads up to those in low profile vehicles. We can’t wait to go back in the springtime!

Completely exceeded my expectations. I went out there to tent camp, they have spots available with amazing views. Some spots are a little tougher to get to without 4-wheel drive. i had my toyota camry so i chose a closer spot, still have a beautiful 360 view. the hosts are super nice and accomodating. They also have several beer taps with a great selection available. They had a bunch of "there does not exist" beer on tap. as a beer head myself, i was pleasantly surprised. my girl drinks wine and they had plenty for her to choose from as well. anyway, 10/10 experience. 10 minute drive from solvang, 15 min from los olivos. ill be back soon. thanks guys

I could not recommend Sanctuary Cielo more!! I was joined by my Honey and our 2 pups and we were all welcomed to sanctuary cielo with open arms. The site is huge with a gas pire pit, a gas bbq, compost toilet (with TP and wet wipes!) lounge chairs, sofas, tables, a huge picnic table, mini fridge, more appliances than I could name (we took advantage of the electric kettle for tea). Decorated so tastefully and comfortably, it felt like an outdoor home in the best way. Everything you could need was thought of down to the tiny details! Amber and Gregory were so hospitable the entire time but they really went out of their way when the weather was planning on getting quite wet and invited us to stay indoors in their very comfortable loft. The hot tub is indeed a MUST! there's a warm outdoor shower to freshen up afterwards (nice big towels included). And we were warmly greeted on Valentine's morning with fresh home made blueberry and banana muffins! She had set out heart shaped plates and decor for us to make our Valentine's weekend extra special. This land is already magical but Amber transformed it into such an amazing outdoor space, we were already planning on coming back before our first sleep haha. Her land also has fun trails to explore, which we all enjoyed, but especially the puppies.

Spanning 1.75 million acres, and stretching for nearly 220 miles from Big Sur nearly to Los Angeles, Los Padres National Forest encompasses a wide range of elevations and terrain, including beaches, forests, rugged coastal mountains, and ten designated wilderness areas. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, backpacking, biking, horseback riding, off-roading, fishing, and hunting. The park is also a biodiversity hotspot, teeming with wildlife and plant life. More than 60 campgrounds and plenty of space for dispersed camping offer tent campers, RV campers, families, groups, and solitude seekers numerous overnight options.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for ocean views and beach access: Situated on a bluff just a short distance from a beach, nearly every site at Kirk Creek Campground offers ocean views.
- Best for stargazing: At 8,300 feet, Chula Vista Campground offers 12 tent-only sites, and dark skies popular with amateur astronomers.
- Best for water enthusiasts: The Arroyo Seco Campground is set near a small lake and a river that provide opportunities for swimming, fishing, and limited boating.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- During the peak summer season, reserve a site as soon as you know your dates. Reservations can be made at least one to three days and up to six months in advance for individual sites and 12 months for group sites.
- If you don’t have a reservation, plan to arrive early in the morning to grab a site at a first-come, first-served campground.
- Be sure to check seasonal opening and closing dates, which vary by campground.
When to go
Nearly all campgrounds are open between May and October. Summer is the busiest time, and popular campgrounds fill up early, especially on weekends. Spring is the best time for wildflowers, trout fishing, and water sports. After winter snowfalls, cross-country skiing and sledding are possible in certain areas.
Know before you go
- Wilderness permits are not required for any of the wilderness areas, but campfire permits are outside of designated recreation sites and developed campgrounds. Adventure passes are required for recreation in certain areas of the forest.
- Bicycles and other mechanized equipment are not permitted in wilderness areas, where travel is restricted to foot, horseback, and wheelchairs.
- Poison oak and ticks can be a problem in certain areas of the forest.
- Fishing licenses are required for anglers 16 and older. Special regulations may apply to wild and scenic river areas.

Aggressive raccoons issue for years that has not been dealt with - Old aluminum trash can is a welcoming call for them.
The Camp allow RVs next to tent and had to leave two days prior to the end because the camper was turning on his generator from 6.20 till 10PM Non stop - Surrounding campers left the campsite earlier as well.
It used to be a relaxing place where you could contemplate the pacific ocean now it is not worth the $45 a day and deal with raccoons and noisy RV's blocking the view

Arroyo Seco Campground
This was a surprisingly peaceful campground. When I first arrived it was busier than I expected, and sites closer than I wanted. But it was pretty calm and quiet, and the surroundings are beautiful. The best part is the proximity to the river. My group and I hiked ~3 miles up the river where we started our river float (wearing wetsuits), and it was incredibly fun and adventurous. Cheap firewood! BYO soap for bathrooms.

Spacious campground with clean bathrooms, nearby beautiful beaches and hikes. Stayed with a large group (20+ and dogs) and there was plenty of room. Great spot for that.

The campsite was really nice the right on a man-made pond. Our seven-year-old love to feed the ducks got to look at some horses the frogs at night. I really enjoyed the sound, but she thought they were a little loud. It was nice to have a campfire and they had a lot of Greets and things so we were able to make steaks and everything would recommend.

Pros:
Lots of shady spots for tents, multiple fire rings. counter-height prep tables near grill. 3 trash cans on site. visitors center has A/C and clean flush toilet.
Cons:
Vault toilet was THE most disgusting I've encountered in 40 years of camping in places with vault toilets, no piped water (there is a spigot, but it's non-operational). One and only cooking fire pit grill has more hole in the grill grate than it has grill grate. The site had trash throughout (around trash cans, in fire rings, ash piles advertising that previous campers made fires in random places) upon arrival. In June the place was a hot, hot, hot hole. Black flies are plentiful, and their bites hurt.

It’s a Beautiful campground and close to the beach; however, there was an extremely rude employee (DANA) that worked at campsite that was overcharging people that reservations and for parking claiming that original reservations were lost. At one point she started screaming at a camper that asked for a refund money back that she had overcharged. So, if you visit, please make sure you confirm all your information and have a printout of it.

We camped here over Labor aday 2021. NFS contracted maintenance to a private company more concerned with our dogs being on leash than with our safety! We ran out of water on a long hike, looking tired and red faced, and the host employees we more concerned with us being near the "employee only" area (where the trail deposited us) and our dogs sacked out on the side not being on leash, than with our well being! The Forrest service employee who came by gave us water and Gatorade because he could tell we needed it, but the employees for the host company just reminded us of rules! The campground was also very spread out and we had to drive to the swimming areas. Overall, very disappointing and we won't be back!

Tent camped 4 nights from June 21, 2021. On the reservation it allowed 2 vehicles on site #17 but then they wanted $10 a night for the 2nd vehicle. I checked with recgov and they admitted it was their error that they did not mention the 2nd vehicle counted as an extra vehicle. I never had this happen anywhere I have camped. Apparently this happens there frequently and I guess it is OK with the campsite because they make more money. So far recgov has done nothing to correct the situation. I may contact GAO.

McGill is such a great campground within the greater LA area. Site 29 is fully accessible for physically disabled folks and my go-to spot. It's right across from a disabled vault toilet, but unfortunately it has very little shade. The shade issue is really the only (though kinda major) flaw of the site, especially in summer months. Sadly, only a few other sites are relatively accessible. I learned this the hard way by booking a site that required walking down a bunch of steps. Thankfully the camp host Harry was wonderful and helped us secure one of the more accessible sites since Site 29 was already booked. Harry also helped us notice the Milky Way! It's wildly gorgeous darks skies here. I love it!

BEWARE OF CAMP HOST: Did a solo camp trip last Sunday (10/11). At 8pm, I’m reading up in my tent & it’s pitch black. The male camp host drove a golf cart to my camp site, staggered towards my truck & started yelling at me. He was very drunk, SCREAMING that I had parked wrong, needed to un-camp & leave immediately. Hipcamp doesn’t allow for long reviews, so I’ll summarize: It was INSANE. I was a woman alone in a campground w/ no signal & a drunk man aggressively threatening me for no reason. I’ve contacted a Forest Service Harassment Hotline & been in touch with the contractor (campone.com) that manages the camp hosts. Both said they are “investigating.”

Contrary to the Hipcamp description, this campground has 4 are reservable sites and 2 walk-ups. You can reserve sites on the recreation.gov site.
The campsite was really cool with good views and tons of big rocks to explore/boulder on. It was a bit smoky due to fires in the area, but at night the skies cleared up and stars were plentiful. As some other reviews have mentioned the flies were a MAJOR annoyance. Luckily the flies didn't bite, but even with a thorough dousing in bug spray me and my gf couldn't stand more than one night. Flies were a dealbreaker for me, so I recommend checking out this site during spring or fall and hope that the flies aren't so rampant.

I had campsite #2 and would book it again — it felt pretty private, I had trees for shade, and had direct creek access. Overall, #1 and #2 are the most private, and #2 and #3 have creek access. Some of the other sites feel a little too close together and lacked shade (#4 is right in the middle of several others, I'd avoid it). Lots of pretty quail and bluebirds, running water in the creek was perfectly chilled, and the Lion Canyon Trail starts at the back of camp site #1 which leads to several other trails (Nordhoff Ridge, West Fork, East Fork). Road to get to the campground was pretty chewed up — be prepared for lots of potholes.

I camped here at Site #6, near the stream over the 4th of July weekend. It was relatively quiet and while there were some flies and mosquitoes, it was a fairly low-to-normal amount for any summer camping. We kept citronella tikis and repellant and were fine.

This was a great campground. Lots of trees and shade. Great place to hang a hammock. They did say they had water, but when we arrived all water spouts had been capped. We stayed in spot 47 and had a ton of room. Lots of flat ground to put tents. Any site in loop 3 is pretty good. The top spots are probably 55, 66, 71.

The problem isn’t the campsite. It’s the campground host, Michael, who blatantly threatened us with death.. Our campsite was next to his trailer and he helped himself over to our camp essentially anytime One night he was drinking with us around our campfire and at some point he just snapped, aggressively telling everybody to be quiet even though he was louder than all of us. But still, we complied and sat quietly around the campfire without saying a word. This was not good enough apparently. He pointed to my friend and said “you need to shut the fuck up.” I got up and told him that wasn’t cool and he went on a full-throated tirade which included “this is my fucking forest” and “I’ll fucking bury you out here.” Not a safe environment AT ALL

Best free camping in California. Period. Surreal tent sites rest on dramatic hills overlooking the mighty pacific ocean. The road to get here is a little treacherous, but it is completely worth it. Nacimiento road has so many great camp spots, but the most important thing with this area is to leave no trace and pack up all trash. Keep Big Sur beautiful!

Magical. The views here require no phone filters. Walk up to the cliffs and water. Most popular sites are 8 and 9 that directly overlook the cliffs. 9 has its own path to the trail down towards the water. There's a bathroom but no running water here. Haven't ever experience any wild animals here. Some walk-in/bike-in sites. Otherwise, it's best to reserve the campsites far in advance. If you try to walk up during peak season, you'll be out of luck.
