Primitive Camp on the Esopus Creek in the Big Indian-Oliverea Valley surrounded by seven 3500' Catskill High Peaks including Slide Mountain, the tallest in the Catskills. Our PRIVATE camp (no other campers) is situated on 100 acres of land in the middle of the Catskill State Park. We are the closest HipCamp site to Slide Mountain, the Catskills tallest peak at 4180 feet. A perfect base camp for some of the best hiking in the Catskills, the site is bordered by Forever Wild Forest and is minutes from the trailheads to Balsam, Giant Ledge, Panther, Big Indian, Slide Mountain and dozens more peaks within 30 minutes or so away. Though the base fee covers up to 4 campers, the site accommodates up to 14 campers. The additional fee is $20.00/per camper per night on top of the base fee. Our drive up camp includes a 10X12 covered tent platform, several individual tent sites with private fire rings, as well as a bunkhouse and a leanto for day use. The camp table and cook pit are covered from the elements. The camp also features the newly designed and built 'Little Bear Cabin', an 11X14 cabin that sleeps 6 with covered porch, with two Queen sized and one double bunk and comfortable 4" thick Thermarest MondoKing mattresses, chairs and a table with a wood burning stove for those chilly nights. The cabin has an additional fee of $30.00/night and can be booked in the extras section at check-out. The cabin does not include bedding so bring your own gear. If tent camping only, the cabin will remain locked and closed unless requested after arrival. For toilet use, we have a CleanWaste loo which is a 5 gal bucket in a toilet seat box. You lift the lid, place a CleanWaste bag in the bucket which has a kitty litter like powder called Poo Powder in it. You do your business, the powder absorbs all the odor and gels all the matter. When done, you lift the seat, take out the bag, tie it up and throw it in the trash. There are camp rules about how to handle trash, recycling, and compost so as to minimize the possibility of black bear visits. Follow those rules so as to avoid a penalty fees of $50.00 if trash, recycling, and compost are not followed. A detailed message about trash, recycling, and compost practice will be sent to campers days before the booked trip. When you need to go you lift the lid, place a CleanWaste bag in the bucket which has a kitty litter like powder called Poo Powder in it. You do your business, the powder absorbs all the odor and gels all the matter. When done, you lift the seat, take out the bag, tie it up and throw it in the trash. If you prefer, you can use our outhouse slightly up the hill.Ask for further details.
Pets allowed
Off leash. Bring your pets and let them roam free providing they can stary within the camp boundaries. If they roam, keep them on a leash. Otherwise they deserve to enjoy the outdoors as well. But keep an eye on them and try to keep them within sight!
Showers available
Cold water only. Sun Shower. Fill it with creek water, place it in the sun and a short time later you have a nice hot shower after hanging the Sun Shower on the hanger in the shower stall. Ask for further details.
Bins available
Compost bin, recycling bin, trash bin. We have a recycle bin for your plastic, metal, and glass waste. We have a compost hole for your vegetable scraps, egg shells, corn husks etc. Though we ask that you "pack in, pack out" there is a metal trash can to keep all your trash in one place for the duration of your stay. Ask for further details.
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit, communal, sink or other dishwashing station. We recommend that you bring real dishes and utensils if you wish because we have a natural washpit for dishes and utensils. Ask for further details.
Picnic table present
Picnic table is covered from the elements with a permanent wood and polycarbonate structure. This is a new addition to our camp. The covered area also has a long counter prep area for your cooler and cooking items. Ask for further details.
Wifi available
Open WiFi network is available a short woods walk away at our home. Just come on over, have a seat on our deck or under a grape arbor pergola patio and do your "thing".
No potable water
Bring your own water, purify from river or stream. There is a seasonal Natural Spring on site. If it runs dry there is an amazing year round spring up the road about a half mile on McKenley Hollow. Ask for further details.

My friend group has done a yearly camping trip at various sites for about a decade now, this was our favorite site so far. The host was attentive and accommodating, the spot itself was spacious, private, and beautiful. Falling asleep to the sound of the Esopus was just what we all needed. I would highly recommend this spot if you’re curious!

Several buddies and I do an annual camping trip, and this was easily one of our favorites. Pierre was a most excellent host - very friendly; it’s evident that he takes pride in caring for & sharing this beautiful piece of earth. Having a place to cook, a place to eat/convene, and a fire pit all under a roof, was very appreciated - especially with a couple rainy evenings. The sound of the creek lulled me to sleep every night. The creek itself is beautiful - plenty of wildlife to enjoy, and a couple places to fully submerge if you wish. It was great having such a large, fairly secluded space all to ourselves. Lots of great hiking, river access, etc. within an easy 10-15 minute drive, or even bike ride. When not cloudy, the stars were excellent and we could see some of the “haze” of the Milky Way. The lack of cell service was actually greatly appreciated for the disconnect, and Pierre’s clearly-labeled WiFi zone within a 1-2 minute walk of the campsite did the job when needed. Lastly, the wash station for dishes was quite helpful, and the camp toilet situation was the best my buddies and I have encountered yet! Overall, it’s no surprise that this site & host are so-highly reviewed. 10/10

The Magic of the Forest and River

A dream setup with plenty of space for tents, lots of benches gathered around the fire, a sweet swimming hole, and the perfect layout for our camp kitchen. We’re also excited to see the new cabin taking shape on the property. This was our sixth stay, and somehow each visit feels even more special than the last. A perfect weekend of unplugging, connecting with nature, and soaking in the magic of the forest and river. We already can’t wait to come back.

absolutely loved our camping experience! we had a handful of kids under 8 who loved the woods, the creek, the field, and the entire setup that Pierre's site had. Despite the rain, we had a great time, and the kicker was Pierre came by and gave the kids a chance to drive/ride his backhoe loader, a real highlight. can't wait to come back! thanks!

Some places are just hard to put into words, this is one of them. Pierre is an exceptional host; everything was ready and waiting, including a super convenient makeshift kitchen that made the whole experience seamless. The camp itself is beautifully secluded, fully immersed in nature, and the surrounding area is simply stunning. Great people, great neighborhood, great location. If you’re looking to actually disconnect and be somewhere beautiful, this is it.

Fall Camping Perfection!

Upper Esopus Creekside Camp
This place is the best! We spent an October weekend here with our dog, and it was a wonderful experience. We lucked out that the moon was nearing new, so the stars were incredible! The creek is absolutely beautiful and right by the camp, so you can fall asleep to the sounds of the river running. The grounds were perfect for our dog to explore while we sat by the river and read books. If you like to cook over the fire, there is a separate pit with a grate for you to use. Pierre was a warm and welcoming host and was readily available when we had any questions. Highly recommended! We hope to come back in the summer and swim in the creek!

We spent three wonderful nights at this creekside campground, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The shallow, clear creek was a dream for the kids—they were in and out of it from morning until evening, splashing, exploring, and making the most of every moment. It felt safe, fun, and exactly what childhood summers should be. The owner went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. He was incredibly friendly, patient, and understanding with our big group, even with our highly energetic crew of kids running around. The campground is just the right mix of comfort and nature. There’s no cell service, which for us was a huge plus—it meant the kids could unplug, and we adults could truly relax without constant notifications. It was the peaceful, much-needed cut-off from the outside world that we didn’t know we needed.

Our small group enjoyed a peaceful, beautiful weekend at this creekside camp. Loved the swimming holes, great camp set up, and watching the birds and chipmunks do their thing. Do be bear aware and keep a clean camp. We've enjoyed coming here during every season -- perhaps we'll have the courage to camp in the winter next time! The best part of camping here is the host himself. It's always a pleasure to see Pierre and hear what he's been up to. He takes great care of the camp and makes sure everyone is welcome.

The camp site is fantastic. Pierre is welcoming and helpful: the site is perfect for a small group looking to have a peaceful time near water and mountains. There is a mountain spring a short drive up the road for fresh water and you can fill coolers there to bring back to camp. Would definitely recommend!

We had a wonderful time at this camp along the water. The running stream sounds were an excellent backdrop to our time. Pierre has created lots of areas for groups to enjoy. From covered spaces in the rain to little trails along his property, you will have a great camp! Plus, it’s close to some great Catskills towns and hike for adventuring. Definitely recommend.

This space by the river is beautiful with lots of built in covered areas for cooking and hanging out. The kids loved playing in the creek! Be be bear aware and keep your food stuff tidy and I'm cars at night.

Amazing experience! Site is perfect for friends and family gateway. Pierre is a fabulous host. He took the time to sho me us around the property and I valued that. Ive been camping my whole life; much of it in the Catskills, and can honestly say this is my favorite site. It’s our second time back and I’m already excited for next summer. The best parts: - covered area for eating AND cooking - the stream is RIGHT there and you can also walk a little bit down to a deeper swimming hole if you want - canvas tent, tent platform, and regular sites make it so people have options depending on their camping comfort level. - the site is so well laid out — fun for kids, easy to supervise them. No reason to go anywhere. Theres more but the biggest thing is that Pierre is an awesome host and a pleasure to talk to. Thank you Pierre!!!!

Pierre’s Hipcamp is the perfect place to spend a night or several nights. The camping area is situated on the creek. We loved exploring the creek and taking a cold plunge into the swimming area. There are several spots to set up camp, as well as a covered cooking and eating area. The property has some fun trails to explore and if you are lucky one of the gorgeous Maine Coon cats will say hello. Pierre was friendly and helpful. Best Hipcamp ever!

As soon as we drove into camp we knew we made a great choice to stay at Upper Esopus Creekside Camp! Pierre has done a great job on creating a welcoming comfortable camp. We hope to get back and spend some more time there soon!

My brother in law, myself and two friends had a great time at the campsite. Was very well kept and Pierre and his wife were very friendly and answered all of our questions. It’s snowed several inches but we were nice and cozy in the prospectors tent. The wood burning stove was small but it did the job. We will definitely be back! Thanks for some great memories.

Pierre was a great host. Welcomed us and let us know where everything was. Told us the background on the property. Site was as described and had plenty of amenities. Great cover by the kitchen to cook and hang out. Property is very large and plenty of space to roam. As well as large areas to set up multiple tents. Will come back again to experience the river when it's not in the single digits.

Great campsite experience! Pierre is a seasoned host with a beautiful piece of property. Directions were clear, Pierre was perfectly helpful, available but not bothersome, and the site is huge! Outside the main camp and fire pit, there are multiple tent spots, a bunk house and a lean-to. I hope to come back again soon!

Pierre’s creekside campsite is a hidden gem tucked into a scenic valley surrounded by mountains. My group visited during the peak fall season and the views did not disappoint! The site is very private with limited wifi allowing you to completely unplug and enjoy the serene nature. There’s a lot to explore nearby as well: trails, activities, a brewery, and a diner too. Highly recommend!
