To all guest you must wait at the lookout until i arrive to guide you into the Valley. Aloha and welcome to Spring Side Hale Surrounded by 2,500-foot cliffs, a journey into the Valley of the Kings requires a steep hike or 4x4 (four wheel drive). Now however, the valley is mostly wilderness interspersed with taro fields (Taro is a traditional Hawaiian staple food) and a couple of dozens of inhabitants. Waipiʻo Valley Road is closed to non-residents. Visitor access to the valley floor and the subsequent valleys is only possible as part of a tour or if you know someone in the valley. The Waipiʻo Lookout is still accessible for everyone. Waipio Valley is a stunning scenic destination with a black sand beach, beautiful waterfalls and Hawaiian historical & cultural significance. It is a very spiritual place of healing, a place of connection with nature and a walk through the past, where time ceases to exist. We pretty much live the off grid lifestyle, escape the hustle (rat race), unplug, enjoy your surroundings, become one with nature, and give back to the ancestor of the valley by interacting/participating with farmers who reside in the valley. Possibly see wild horses wondering the trails or playing on the beach. Eat a wide range of fruits straight from the tree. Explore miles of trails, rivers, and waterfalls right outside your front door.

Haven in the Waipio valley
Mathias was very welcoming and accommodating, this was our first time ever camping in this type of setting and he was very helpful through it all. This is a great campsite if you want to be secluded with amazing views to wake up to. The beach is about a mile walk and you usually have it to yourself. Keep in mind there’s no running water so you’ll be using a bucket as a toilet like most sites. They have a natural spring you can get water from and if anything ever arises Mathias is very helpful.

Most excellent adventure!

We felt very privileged to spend two nights in the Waipio Valley; truly a magical place! I would suggest packing as if you were backpacking as the facilities are all pretty rustic, but there is everything you would find at a backcountry campsite and the natural spring water is pristine. Much gratitude to Mathias for the tour of his orchard and all the time he spent with us. Overall a memorable and fantastic experience. We hope to go back there one day!

Amazing place to explore if you are into adventures and loves backpacking! Mathias is super kind and shows us around the valley and gives us some free local fruits to taste. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Absolutely incredible experience—just book it! You won’t regret it, and it’ll be a memory you’ll cherish forever. Mathias picked us up at the outlook and guided us on a stunning hike down to Kama’s place. The journey took us across the river, along the beach, and through the lush forest. Mathias and Kama are some of the most welcoming and friendly hosts you’ll ever meet. They generously share their food, stories, and a glimpse into their unique life in this sacred valley. The scenery is breathtaking, offering the perfect opportunity to disconnect from modern society and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and serenity of the valley. We would have loved to extend our stay, but unfortunately, our schedule didn’t allow it. A couple of tips: the mosquitos are intense, so come prepared with repellent or protective clothing. Also, the hike back up is steep, so pack light and stick to the essentials.
