Weekend Trip to Ohia Hale

This is nice land to stay on, if you’re lucky and the sky is clear at night the stars are unREAL. Colin was very responsive and helpful. It’s a bring your own everything type of place, but there is a portapotty that works just fine for what you need it for (hasn’t been serviced in a while but it was perfectly functional and not gross. There’s a beach with a shower not too far away so that’s helpful! There are pigs roaming around the shadows at night but none bothered us or came near our camp while we were outside. We really liked our stay and would stay again and recommend to folks that can handle the minimal amenities like we can. Thanks Colin!!

1 night at IO's NEST LOOKOUT on the Hamakua

We loved Krystle's IO's Nest! It was comfortable, adorable, and atop a hill with spectacular views of the hillside looking down to the ocean from the spacious deck. The sunrise was incredible! The private outdoor shower was amazing and had mood lights, soap/shampoo, and flowers peaking under the bottom of the walls. It was an easy 20 minute walk to Akaka Falls, and there was a fruit stand just outside the first gate where we bought star fruit and coconut from the neighbor. The place was easy to find, and Krystle was an excellent host. She answered all our questions promptly, and made us feel welcome and comfortable. The Nest had electricity, cell service, wifi, an electric kettle and tea, coffee maker with coffee and filters, and a large charging station with USB and AC outlets. There was also a covered parking area right next to the Nest for our motorcycles. We would definitely stay here again!

Weekend Trip to Hamakua Guesthouse

This is our second time at Hamakua House (last time 8 years ago) - we love the vibe and the caretakers are really nice and generous. A bit rustic, as expected for hammock cabanas, but very cute. A short drive to Hilo and beautiful countryside location. We would stay again (hopefully sooner than 8 years!)

Could not recommend this place enough, it was such a peaceful space with beautiful views. We left feeling refreshed with full hearts. The host was more than welcoming, gave wonderful suggestions for local places to consider. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed.

Beautiful peaceful spot. Loved the yummy treats from the fruit stand before settling in for the evening. The porta potty provided was the cleanest we’d used in our whole 10 day trip! Had a visit from the sheep in the morning before heading out. Thanks for the stay :)

The pros: affordable, beautiful area, nice glamping cabanas, well set up for cooking (big bbqs!), coolers and towels to take to the beach, picking fresh lillikoi in the morning, overall a really lovely stay. The cons: the shared space vibe was a little strange because they were overstaffed with volunteers, so it felt a bit like a youth hostel. It made it feel like guests were intruding on the volunteer hostel vibe and often the kitchen was occupied.

Nice private camp area behind locked gate. Careful there is a lot of broken glass as you drive past the gate towards the campsite, I cleaned up a lot but the more I cleaned up the more I found. The code to the gate was wrong on the directions - luckily there was a worker at the fruit stand that gave me the right one. Tried to get a hold of the host regarding wifi but took over a day - called twice, WhatsApp, text - she finally responded to a text. Nice place to unwind and not have anyone bother you.

The yurt is set on a beautiful farm and has all the amenities you'd need. I'd recommend bringing ear plugs if you are a light sleeper-as the sounds of the lush and dense tropical forest night life (maybe frogs) continue all night! My family and I were comfortable here for our 2 night stay and were able to dine in for all meals with the provided kitchen and fridge

Bumpy road up for us in a sprinter van but slow and steady made it happen no problem. Colin was available and super helpful navigating us up and even telling us the best way to park our large van. Susan stopped by to quickly tell us about the critters and plants nearby which was fun to learn about. The toilets were not available as they hadn't been serviced so ask ahead if that’s a need for your stay. Overall a peaceful stay. Thanks Colin and Susan!

The bungahigh cabin had amazing views and was in a good location for exploring the east side of the island! Nancy was very kind and made check in super easy. Everything was as described and we appreciated the supplies for bugs, thankfully the bugs weren’t bad though. Definitely a camping feel with a comfortable bed.

Magical yurt with so many amazing points to mention. Spacious and well equipped kitchen, great location. The spa bathroom feels so luxury - though be sure to bring your own hairdryer - I got caught out with that! Every other thing you would expect from a hotel or vacation rental was included though - even flippers!

This was a unique and beautiful experience to share with people living in and off the valley land of Big Island. If you’re an experienced camper/adventure seeker you’ll love this stay. You meet at the top of the valley and hike or drive down. Joel and his friend Kama were very helpful in making sure we were comfortably set up for our stay. My partner and I learned so much about what life is like in the valley and the land itself. There is a deep respect for the people and land here, and all guests should come with this shared respect and curiosity. They were extremely generous with their time, space, and knowledge. Joel showed us how to harvest food that we then cooked together in the outdoor kitchen space. We then explored the nearby secluded black sand beach where we played with Yoshi, the resident dog🐕 If you’re lucky you’ll meet the most affectionate host, Ulu 🐈 An unforgettable stay! We hope to return some day

Staying here was truly one of the most unique and special experiences of our big island trip — the highlight, without question. Jo’el and Kama were incredibly generous and welcoming hosts who made us feel like part of their world. They brought such warmth and fun to the entire stay. This isn’t your typical stay — it’s an authentic, local experience that comes with its own quirks and adventures. But that’s exactly what makes it magical. We got to pick fresh fruit from the orchard, cook meals in the outdoor kitchen, and experience life the way locals do. The secluded black sand beach nearby was absolutely stunning, and we even got to play Yoshi ball with Yoshi the dog and hang out with Ulu the cat — both total stars of the place. If you’re looking for something real, grounding, and unforgettable, this is it. We absolutely loved every minute and would recommend it 100%.

We sell our fruits ripe and cut ready to eat at our roadside fruit stand, open 10-6 daily including holidays! We serve local fresh juices and machete open coconuts to drink ice cold. We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. As all the land here is born of lava, many moons ago this land began to host plants and critters. Long after, it was sculpted and a number of families and farmers have contributed to what we have today. An abundance of fruit and vegetables within sight of the ocean. Peaceful breezes and warming sun make for unparalleled tranquility. Today the land still gives back to its visitors. Come recharge. As this is agricultural lands, there are many critters. Dogs, chickens, pheasants, peacock, mongoose, and many birds. Tge invasive coqui frog is annoying to some and calming to others. The micro climate here swings from warm and dry to wet quickly. Best to always prepare for rain. There is snorkeling, beaches, local food, Cafe, BBQ, poke, fish-n-chips, grocery, Sunday farmers market and hiking nearby. It is peaceful here, but also an active farming community. As an organic farm, we put alot of effort into soil building and as such, there are soft places that will be damaged by the weight of a vehicle. Staying on the driveway is best. We will guide you to where you need to go. Our road is paved, but bumpy. Any vehicle will make it without damage if driven slowly. 1 to 4mph tops. *Be sure to avoid the camper rental companies that restrict certain roads. Aloha and have a great day.
