Camp overlooking the ocean
I loved camping out in the platform tent! It was very clean and a comfortable set up. The view from the deck was amazing and private! Greg and his family were wonderful hosts. The lower level of their house has 3 lovely rooms that they rent out to travelers through Airbnb and I shared the outdoor kitchen area with them. It was fun visiting with other travelers. This Hipcamp was just a wonderful experience. ❤️

Luxury glamping
We had a wonderful stay in Greg's Platformtent. Wonderful view over the ocean, nice garden around and the tent was simply great, very tasteful furnished, with lots of space. Also the kitchen (share with other people) an Bathroom were pleasent, with everything it needs.
The contact with the family was very pleasant and uncomplicated. Directions and check in without any problems. We will love to come back to this wonderful place. Mahalo nui

We had a great short stay at Waipi'o lodge. The house has stunning ocean views and is equipped with plenty of amenities and comfortable rooms. Stones throw away from Waipi'o valley and close to Honokaa and Waimea.

Fantastic location with a beautiful view! Greg was a wonderful host. Although you could hear every whisper and footstep between the walls and floorboards, the family and guests were respectful of time so noise was not an issue to sleep. The hot shower was fabulous!!

Nice relaxing option for a stopover
Pros: Very easy to find and get to location. The place is clean and decorated nicely. The kitchen/dining area is outdoors (with a roof) and is very convenient for cooking something simple and to have a relaxing meal. The bathroom, particularly the shower stall, is very roomy. The shower has good water pressure. Greg is very friendly and helpful.
Cons: The house is 100 year old and has poor sound proofing. Given that the rooms are located at the basement level, when someone is walking on the main floor, each step is clearly heard. Also, one can hear everything said in the other bedrooms. Given that Waipi'o Valley is now closed to visitors, there is not much to do in the area. All other major sightseeing sites are quite a drive.

Rest and scenic spot
This was a lovely time. It was exactly the rest we were looking for. It’s also just down the road from the Waipi’o Valley Overlook, which is a must visit and wonderful to be able to get to easily at sunrise.

Beautiful spot, must see!
Such a lovely spot on the Big Island. The scenery out back was beautiful and relaxing. We preferred to stay here vs. in Hilo and it gave us the opportunity to see parts of the island that we may not have if we stayed in the more tourist areas. We booked all 3 rooms at the lodge and have only great things to say about our stay!

This place was absolutely lovely! Access to the garden, so close to Waipi'O Valley and tucked away enough to feel like you're in a true local Hawaian experience, this place is a great getaway! We loved sharing the space with others as it was a great opportunity to connect with other travelers.
Make sure to read about the rooms being a bit louder, you really can hear everything so if you're a light sleeper I wouldn't recommend this stay. But we got all the rest we needed!

Don’t skip this place. Amazing!!!!
This place is beautiful and amazing. I met other lovely campers here with my wife. I was easily able to cook up a nice dinner with the kitchen provided. The views are amazing. The beds are comfortable. You are hard pressed to find better accommodation out there for the money, even at triple. Close to the trailhead. Have breakfast at the lookout.

Friendly stay.
Waipio Lodge is a friendly place to stay with various accommodations. Its even good for groups as yhere are two very lage tents on platforms to accommodate groups. Also there is a choice of three rooms that open into a common living area, with shared restroom, and shared cooking facilities and a full size fridge. The host puts out fruit and eggs from the property which is a very nice touch.

Gregs place was great. Very beautiful and well designed space. Its definitely an older building, so be prepared for a rustic stay. I was a little shocked at first by the frogs in the bathroom, but totally got used to them. I would stay here again. Great ammenities and a beautiful ocean view, highly recommend!

Beautiful and peaceful place to rest for the night with stunning Waipi’o Valley only a mile down the road. This property has it all...comfortable rooms, indoor/outdoor showers, a kitchenette, a shared social space to interact with other travelers, awe inspiring views of the Pacific from the patio, fresh fruit on the property, and most importantly, extremely accommodating and hospitable hosts. Would highly recommend to anyone traveling in the northern area of the Big Island, with a desire to check out the dramatic Hamakua Coast!

Great Alternative to hotel
Great alternative to staying here instead of a hotel. Greg does his best at making you feel welcomed. Comfortable bed and plenty of room in bedroom with its own desk and sink. You share bathroom equipped with shower, sink and living room & full equipped outdoor kitchen where you can meet with other guests. Fresh fruit from his tree was an added benefit

Home away from home.
We had a delightful stay this Labor Day weekend at Waipi'o Lodge. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and the host and family were friendly. The common kitchen is well supplied with pots, pans and other essentials. The available coffee and pancake mix to prepare was a nice touch. We live at the other end of the Big Island and expect to return to the Waipi'o Lodge in the future.

Waipi'o Lodge Campsite
Add this stop to your visit!
Such a great place! The amenities are fantastic, Greg and his family are friendly and helpful. I camped, so I had the yard to myself. There is a stellar outdoor kitchen, access to a fridge and dishes, etc. The outdoor shower and bathroom are wonderful and have warm water with great water pressure and the common room and kitchen are cleaned up daily. There are fresh fruit and nut trees in the yard. The location is not at all far from the main road around the island and within easy distance to groceries, restaurants, etc.
The tent got quite dirty in the nightly wind + rain, but that's to be expected in that climate and while I was there Greg was in the process of installing wooden platforms so it seems like even that very minor displeasure is soon to be remedied.
They also had complimentary pancake mix which unexpectedly made my day.
