The property is located on Maui island in the Kula district on the drier side of Haleakala. In days before western contact the area was heavily forested with native plants and trees and rainfall was abundant. The native Hawaiian grew bananas, taro and sweet potato.  After Western contact businessmen mostly from the United States developed huge tracts of land for ranching and farming which cleared the native forests and destroyed the eco system from the mountain to the sea. Many of the Hawaiian people moved away nearer to the towns and immigrant Chinese laborers from the ranches and plantations moved in. The Chinese brought in the Wattle tree to plant for firewood as these trees grew very fast. These are the majority of the trees that you see today. As part of the Chinese immigration, the founder of modern China, Sun Yat Sen lived here for a time and planned his revolution to overthrow the last Chinese Dynasty. There is a park dedicated to him nearby. We have picnic tables a propane grill, a fire pit and a covered gazebo that is shared with 3 cabins This site is located at the 2800 ft altitude and the temperature at night can range from mid 50 to mid 60 degrees F. If you are planning to go to Haleakala, we are about 45 -60 minutes to the summit. We are also on the south side approach to Hana. There is a great restaurant for breakfast and lunch about 10 minutes away in Keokea town called Grandma's Coffee house.

Nice and quiet. The place is also well maintained. It’s a little cold for car campers but overall a good place to stay at.

Glamping in nature!
We enjoyed our stay so much! Our cabin had a double bed, a hot (propane) shower and bathroom sink. All water is potable. There's a picnic table with a covered gazebo nearby for all to share, a BBQ grill and (I from another reviewer) the BBQ tools are inside the grill, but I didn't check. There's a fire pit, but it was too rainy during our trip to use it. The cabin has paper towels, 2 bath towels, 2 beach towels, a hand towel and bedding on bed (+an extra blanket for those chilly nights!). Hand soap and a first aid kit, so many thoughtful touches. Also included are 2 umbrellas, 2 plastic chairs for sitting outside. No electricity but there is a solar powered overhead light in the cabin & bathroom plus outdoor lights that come on as you pass. That said, I was to have my headlamp for walking around at night. The bathroom is only a few steps away but not so close that we heard (or smelled) people using the restroom. They provide TP and handsoap at the bathroom sink. Parking spots are clearly marked, 1 car per cabin/tent spot. Arriving in daylight it was easy to find, but once we were familiar with it coming back after dark was not a problem. 40 min drive from airport. We did a tasting at Maui wine (might need a reservation on the weekend but they got us in) and had lunch at ulupalakua ranch grill, drove up Mt haleakala, had amazing meals (dinner at Kula Bistro and breakfast at Grandma's coffee house) and enjoyed a day at one of the Wailea hotels via Resort Pass. Mahalo!

Well maintained, well signed!
We arrived after dark on a very foggy evening and Alika’s directions were very clear and helpful. The driveway was lit by red pathfinding lights just as described, and the parking location and tent site were both well signed. We also appreciated that the tent spot had a tarp strung over it—it was very rainy, and this helped keep our tent cozy and dry inside. Bathroom and trash facilities were also well maintained and well marked. Everything was well set up. Thanks Alika!

This was my first hipcamp experience so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but all was great! I appreciated all the detail that went into the property including motion activated lights which came in hand during our night arrival and midnight bathroom trips. The hot shower in the morning was super nice! mahalo Alika!

You can't go wrong with this one!
The campsite was great. Directions were well explained and it was very easy the follow the path even at night. We were also very surprised by the propane shower. It worked perfectly. If you struggle to find a place, I highly recommend this one.

We loved camping at Alika and Pi'ilani's! It was safe, peaceful, beautifully surrounded by trees and nature and had great amenities like a hot shower, sinks, and restrooms that were all clean and well-maintained. The stargazing was also amazing each night. It was such a great place to stay to explore upcountry farms, trails, and Haleakala. Beyond all of this, Alika and Pi'ilani are amazing, kind hosts who make you feel welcome and at home. When we were having issues with our car, Pi'ilani was so kind and generous and treated us like ohana to help us out. When we were in a pinch and in need of one more night to stay last minute, she also helped us out then and found a way for it to work. She was the rainbow to our rainy situation and she is such a blessing. We will never forget our stay here and look forward to staying again next time we are in Maui!

This cabin well exceeded my expectations! Comfortable bed, warm shower (which is located IN the cabin - I had missed that part and was pleasantly surprised!), beautiful stars at night, quiet, lots of thoughtful amenities for everyone to share (grill, chairs, etc). No complaints about my stay here. If you're on a budget in Hawaii and don't mind a no-frills cabin experience in a quiet area, this is the perfect place. Also located super close to Haleakalā, which is a must-see. Make sure you visit Grandma's Coffee House down the street to try the delicious coconut crusted sweetbread french toast.

The camp is wonderful respite from a busy island. Directions and all well defined and all campers very quiet and as pleased as we were. Thank you Alika for the great place to watch the sun set, and the brilliant stars at night.

Excellent
We arrived in Maui off a flight from Australia and drove straight to this campsite to park up for the night. It was incredibly still and peaceful, so we had an excellent nights sleep. The view from the campsite out towards the ocean was magnificent and provided a great backdrop for eating our meals. We also loved the hot shower! I would highly recommend this spot to anyone travelling to this area of Maui.

Great quiet, safe spot!
Alina’s small mountain getaway felt very comfortable and safe. Much quieter than other places (fewer chickens!) but still some wildlife noises to be aware of. Pretty birds & flowers, and beautiful sunsets, plus Alika was very friendly! Bathrooms were great, and nice grill available…My only suggestion would be to add an outdoor shower. Otherwise, perfect!

More than I expected! Clean, affordable, and a hot shower! Great location! We stayed the night after completing the back side of the Road to Hana. Second night we hiked the Volcano and stayed for sunset. Easy to get to, not far from food trucks and a drug store. Grandma’s Coffee House just down the road was amazing too! Hostess is helpful and very accommodating. The Hosts own and manage the property so no middle person and extra fees. Definitely recommend!

Nice place to crash
We got there late and left early both nights, but it was a nice location if you want to go to Haleakala for sunrise or sunset. Campsite was easy find find. The weather is cooler there which is nice in a campervan. The outdoor shower was spacious, had great water pressure, and stayed hot. We also liked that we had our own personal toilet and sink next to this spot. The owner installed motion lights around the property which was nice when walking around late at night or early in the morning. Overall good experience, but I wouldn't consider this a campsite you would want to spend an extended period of time at due to location (a bit far from beaches and not much to do there).

Nice camp spot in upcountry Maui!
Alika’s spot is perfect for folks looking to wake up early and hit Haleakalā for sunrise! We appreciated the clean bathrooms and shower house, and the clear communication. About 15 minutes down the road is Bully’s Burgers, a delicious roadside burger stand. Definitely recommend a stop there when you’re staying here.

Mountain cabin #2
The mountain cabin 2 had very comfy beds, a personal shower, and a super close location to the bathroom. The bathrooms were clean and had a shared sink. The cabin area had a sheltered picnic table with a shared grill available for use. We met Alika on our second day and he was very nice and accommodating. The cabin was close by to the lavender farm, which was a great stop before we made it. Kula is limited with stores and may close early plan groceries and supplies accordingly to get the most out of your stay.

I loved the mountain cabin! It was a perfect break from camping with a nice bed and warm shower. There was a nice pavilion in the middle of all the cabins with a grill and all the utensils needed. I would definitely stay there again. The little town of Kula was super cute and the local Italian bistro was fantastic. Go there for sure!
