This is a breathtaking space that our family has poured many decades and multiple generations into. We are surrounded by jungle, with a freshwater stream running through the entire property and unobstructed mountain views. If you’re especially sensitive to mosquitos, bugs, geckos, free roaming chickens or other elements to be expected in nature, this might not be the place for you.
Waimanalo is a small agricultural town filled with nurseries, horse stables, and a high concentration of Hawaiian homes. It remains mostly undeveloped and authentic, and we aim to keep it that way. Outsiders do not often get the opportunity to stay back here, but we welcome respectful travelers looking for an authentic experience who can appreciate this privilege.
While nestled against the mountains, we're just a five minute drive from the beach. We are fifteen minutes from Kailua town, where you'll find several grocery stores, shops, and restaurants.
This is a working farm. While we are very hospitable, we are not in the business of hospitality. I am happy to accommodate travelers, but I am not here at your beck and call. If that is the experience you are seeking, I think you would be happier elsewhere. We appreciate all of your bookings, and profits go directly back into farm infrastructure and new fruit trees. Things here are always changing and growing. You may see garden beds being prepared, new areas being cleaned up, little construction projects happening, or ideas that are still coming to life. It is not a polished resort or a finished commercial farm — it is simply our home, our farm, and something we are creating with our own hands.
We keep bees, raise chickens, grow food, and are learning every day how to live a little more closely with the land. We try to keep things simple, use pesticide-free and organic practices whenever we can, and slowly become more self-sufficient over time.
Staying at Totonami Farm means being part of a place that is still growing and taking shape, where every season brings something new. Some days are quiet, some days we are working on a new project, and there is always something happening around the farm.
More than anything, we hope this can be a place where you can slow down, enjoy the North Shore, spend time around nature and animals, and experience a small part of the life we are building here.

The property is located on Maui island in the Kula district on the drier side of Haleakala. In days before western contact the area was heavily forested with native plants and trees and rainfall was abundant. The native Hawaiian grew bananas, taro and sweet potato. After Western contact businessmen mostly from the United States developed huge tracts of land for ranching and farming which cleared the native forests and destroyed the eco system from the mountain to the sea. Many of the Hawaiian people moved away nearer to the towns and immigrant Chinese laborers from the ranches and plantations moved in. The Chinese brought in the Wattle tree to plant for firewood as these trees grew very fast. These are the majority of the trees that you see today. As part of the Chinese immigration, the founder of modern China, Sun Yat Sen lived here for a time and planned his revolution to overthrow the last Chinese Dynasty. There is a park dedicated to him nearby.We have picnic tables a propane grill, a fire pit and a covered gazebo that is shared with 3 cabins This site is located at the 2800 ft altitude and the temperature at night can range from mid 50 to mid 60 degrees F. If you are planning to go to Haleakala, we are about 45 -60 minutes to the summit. We are also on the south side approach to Hana. There is a great restaurant for breakfast and lunch about 10 minutes away in Keokea town called Grandma's Coffee house.

As this is agricultural lands, there are many critters. Dogs, chickens, pheasants, peacock, mongoose, and many birds. Tge invasive coqui frog is annoying to some and calming to others.
The micro climate here swings from warm and dry to wet quickly. Best to always prepare for rain.
There is snorkeling, beaches, local food, Cafe, BBQ, poke, fish-n-chips, grocery, Sunday farmers market and hiking nearby.
It is peaceful here, but also an active farming community.
As an organic farm, we put alot of effort into soil building and as such, there are soft places that will be damaged by the weight of a vehicle. Staying on the driveway is best. We will guide you to where you need to go.
Our road is paved, but bumpy. Any vehicle will make it without damage if driven slowly. 1 to 4mph tops. *Be sure to avoid the camper rental companies that restrict certain roads.

When surf and ocean conditions allow, you may enjoy kayaking, swimming, diving, fishing, surfing and seasonal bird, whale, and dolphin watching.
As camp hosts we will provide the best guidance during your stay and are available for more intimate one on one assistance with your choice of activities should you need. Please specify what your intentions for this camp experience are during our meeting at the valley lookout. As active farmer/arborist/gardeners, we are seeking many hands in work-play projects and welcome long stay extensions involving a hana (workplay) trade agreement. Be sure to let us know if you are interested in this option to extend your stay.

Volcano Island Farm is located on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. We are 10 minutes from Honokaʻa Town and 20 minutes from Waipiʻo Valley Lookout.
We are a small agricultural farm with gardens, hydroponic greenhouses (coming soon), chickens for eggs, and acres of macadamia nut orchards. Most of the property is open green space with plenty of shade from trees—as long as you don’t mind the occasional falling nut.
We offer two types of camping. Traditional camping is available for guests with their own tent, which can be set up anywhere near the bathhouse in the grass or under a tree.
We also have tents and camping equipment available for use as needed. In addition, we offer the opportunity to stay in our restored Volkswagen van.
The van sleeps a couple very comfortably with a full- to queen-size bed, a swivel chair, and interior lighting. It is cozy and comfortable and includes a picnic table and outdoor lighting in the surrounding area.
The bathhouse is shared among all campers. We typically have no more than four campers at a time, so it is generally easy to share the space. The bathhouse includes a hot shower, sink with mirror, private toilet room, off-grid hot tub (heats in about 20 minutes), and an outdoor deck area for eating or relaxing.
Volcano Island Farm is a calm and quiet retreat from everyday life. We look forward to hosting you and hope you enjoy your relaxing stay. We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. We have peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. Not to mention our friendly farm cats.
Our current camp sites are not in the fruit orchard, but in a rolling hills open pasture land near the fruit stand. It is rustic and pastoral.
We are a community of a few passionate farmers and fruit lovers. There’s a family- myself Rose, my partner Matthew and our daughter Mela, plus several awesome guys and girls who help out in different areas to grow our lives together!

We are a remote, off-grid farm located in one of the most beautiful parts of the island, surrounded by wild, untamed land. Enjoy gorgeous sunrises and sweeping ocean views. We are a small community growing a variety of medicinal plants and herbs, and we also offer yoga and hula-inspired dance sessions to our guests for an additional fee.
This is a true sanctuary for those seeking adventure. The farm sits at the top of a steep, mile-long 4-wheel-drive road. Guests can either pay for parking and a shuttle via quad with our neighbors or drive up the hill themselves in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. This property is best suited for adventurous souls, and we require a minimum stay of four nights.
We are happy to host respectful, conscientious, and good-vibe guests who appreciate nature, community, and the slower pace of island life.

Big Island is not RV-friendly at all. The campsites were closed following the hurricane, so the only option is to stay on someone’s private property. On the west side of the island, this was the only place available on Hipcamp — there were no other options. I arrived at night in the rain, and the site wasn’t marked at all. Thanks to Colin, who stayed on the phone with me and guided me to the location. I have to pay 10$ for check-in after 8pm.
The road leading up to the site is in very poor condition, so you really need to drive slowly. Parking cost around $45 per night, which I find absolutely outrageous. There are portable toilets on-site, but I didn’t use them, so I can’t comment on their condition. Other than that, there are no facilities whatsoever, and even mobile phone reception is very poor. The following morning, a man was walking around the area with a rifle and dogs. Thanks to Colin for helping me find the place. All it would take is better signage. Based on my own experience, I can’t really recommend this place.

Weekend Trip to Living Circle Farms Hawaii
We absolutely loved our time at Living Circle Farms! Mini stole our hearts, and Jenny and Nathan were amazing. You can really feel how much love and care they put into this place, and the warmth they welcomed us with made our stay that much more special.
We really needed a little break from the city to slow down and have some quiet time. Living Circle Farms was exactly what we needed. Being surrounded by nature, so much beauty, and such a fun filled environment was perfect.
We’re so grateful we found this little gem and got to meet Jenny, Nathan, and sweet Mini. It’s not often you come across a place that makes you feel so at home, where you can slow down, be present, and appreciate the simple things.
Mahalo for opening your space and sharing so much of your knowledge and kindness with us. We left feeling rested, grateful, and with full hearts. We have so much respect for what you’re creating at Living Circle Farms, and we will definitely be back with the kiddo, and hopefully to volunteer!

Great off grid cabin that doesn't even feel off grid. The room was a great temperature with the awesome fan they have, comfy bed too! Loved waking up to the peaceful jungle sounds and eating fruit from the farm. Tranquil experience overall which was perfect after a long travel day, which the hosts accommodated our late arrival so nicely. Love this place!

Our son said this was his favorite place we stayed, and it was ours too! There was so much room for our kids to run and explore. We loved strolling around the macadamia nut farm and spent the evening picking mac nuts. We were the only ones at the campsite, which made it feel extra peaceful. There were showers and everything we needed for a comfortable night. Such a great family-friendly spot and a perfect stop between Kona and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The hosts were very welcoming and responsive. We hope to come back again soon!

Where to go
Oahu
Oahu is the state's most-visited island. While many visitors head straight to Honolulu's sandy Waikiki Beach, the island offers plenty to experience outside the big city, with gorgeous beaches all over, plus tons of hiking trails. If you want to camp, you’ll find options at Ahupua'a 'O Kahana State Park and Bellows Field Beach Park, both on the island’s eastern shores.
The Big Island
The Big Island's size isn't its only claim to fame. It's also known for its tasty Kona coffee and for its abundance of volcanoes, including Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, both in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one of four national parks on the island. There are also lots of places to camp on the island, including at the Kalōpā State Recreation Area and the Kīholo State Park Reserve (weekend camping only).
Maui and Molokai
Maui is well known for its large resorts and gorgeous scenery, especially in the emeraldine ʻĪao Valley State Monument and from Haleakalā National Park, the best place on the island for a sunrise hike. Reservable campsites can be found at both Wai'ānapanapa State Park and the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area. The nearby island of Moloka'i is a quiet alternative, without the big development found on other islands. Camping is available in the island's Pālāʻau State Park.
Kauai
Dubbed the "Garden Isle" for its numerous gardens and overall lush landscapes, Kauai feels quieter and more laid-back than Maui or Oahu. Its best-known hiking areas include the pristine Nāpali Coast (only accessible by foot or boat) and the vibrantly hued Waimea Canyon State Park, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." You can camp in the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park, provided you obtain a permit in advance, or in Kōke'e State Park and Polihale State Park.
When to go
Hawaii only has two real seasons: a hotter, dryer summer season (April–October) and a cooler, rainier winter (November–March). The resorts and tourist destinations across the islands are at their busiest during the summer and winter vacation months, and hotel and flight prices tend to soar during these periods. Late spring and early autumn are ideal for avoiding rainfall and crowds. Flights from the mainland are generally at their cheapest between January and March.
