When to Go
San Gregorio State Beach is open from 8am until sunset year-round with no overnight camping allowed. Because this location is near the Bay Area, summer doesn’t always guarantee the warmest weather, and fog and other weather systems can move in and out of the area quickly. It’s not one of the most crowded Bay Area beaches, and its lack of food and amenities helps keep the largest crowds away. Head into nearby Pescadero for sandwiches to bring to the picnic tables.
Know Before You Go
- No camping is available at San Gregorio State Beach, but Half Moon Bay State Park and Butano State Park are both incredibly popular camping spots nearby. If you want to enjoy the beach for multiple days, it’s best to make overnight reservations months in advance or opt for a Hipcamp.
- Coastal weather can change on a dime, especially because this region is notoriously unpredictable. Bring clothing for a warm burst of sun or a frigid foggy spell just to be safe.
- San Gregorio State Beach’s highlights include its hiking and beach walks. However, if you walk too far north, you’ll reach San Gregorio Private Beach: a clothing-optional beach on private property beyond the state-owned land.
