There is really something for everyone to do!We're surrounded by working farms on all sides so, thankfully, the only noise is from a heard of sheep across the way, or some deer in the forest. It’s a truly peaceful outdoor getaway. As hosts, we typically greet our visitors at some point during their stay, though we are very happy to respect total privacy. We have a few other campsites, well-spaced apart, so you can expect to see other campers periodically throughout your stay in passing or in common areas such as the toilet. You will be able to enjoy privacy and all the serenity that the outdoors has to offer! There is cooking grate on the fire pit so you can cook up some delicious meals. We’d suggest bringing some camping chairs if you’re tent camping to enjoy your meals or your morning coffee, as we do not have a picnic table on site. You can also enjoy cozying up by the private campfire and toasting some marshmallows at sunset. We have potable well water for our campers as well as a shared double stall composting toilet for your comfort. The toilets are set up near the campsites for added convenience. This was a 55-acre farm, split in half to accommodate a bypass through Charlottesville, so the previous owners had to give up half the land, and actually moved the house down to the other half of the property! They had to build a land bridge to get to the new home site, so they turned the bridge into a dam and created a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo. My wife Stephanie and I bought the property in early 2017 and have turned it into a private horse farm, adding pastures, a riding ring, and 6-stall barn. There are ~21 horses who live on the property.

The cabin is located on an old apple orchard and budding homestead. It is off-grid and powered by solar. It is a short walk from the parking area (75 steps uphill). The cabin is one room with a kitchenette, hot outdoor shower, and outdoor compost toilet. The cabin can sleep up to three people with a queen bed, futon, and pullout couch. The kitchen includes a gas range, mini fridge, a sink with running water, and basic kitchen cook wear. A propane heater is available for extra warmth on a chilly night. A shelf equipped with books and board games. A propane grill sits on the front porch, and a fire pit out front. Our location is 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail and James River access. Only 15 minutes from the Swift Run Gap Entrance to the Shenandoah National Park our farm has a mountain feel.
Our 17 acre farm was originally part of a larger family farm and moonshine stills were once in operation on the property, now we grow veggies and berries. The Mayapples are prolific in spring and the fall colors are terrific.

Starting December 1, or first night below freezing we will be closing down Bath House and only access will be at outhouses. Only sites near outhouses will be open and there will be no access to water.
Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays.

Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays.

This campsite's location is great if you need a place to stay near the city. The campsite itself was spacious and relatively quiet. Unfortunately, one of the days was very rainy-- our tent flooded and we found it difficult leaving the muddy driveway. All in all, would use again, as long as, there is no precipitation in the forecast.

Weekend Trip to Heart and Soil Homestead
The cabin was great for our trip. My two sons and I enjoyed the rustic feel of the cabin and the isolated feel of the property. The hosts were super responsive and kind. I would recommend this cabin to anyone.

Bob was such a wonderful and gracious host. I lost one of my beagles, and he helped me get the word out quickly, online. Thankfully we found her, none the worse for the wear! In fact I think she had a great time. The camp sites are well laid out and I think this would be a great place for a group.

My husband, dog, and I had a great time car camping on Emmalyn's land. We arrived after dark, but it was still easy to navigate to the site. It is not too far from the highway, and we found it to be very quiet. It was a perfect stopover for our long drive!

Bob was incredibly helpful at relocating us because site #2 doesn’t allow dogs. He moved us to the spacious #7 campsite at no additional charge, and we never had to talk to another person while we were camping. It was exactly the kind of escape into nature that we were looking for. We will be back!

I couldn’t believe how peaceful this place was, so close to town. Standard camp spots, nice tree canopies, and generally level. Waking up to soft rolling hills and grazing horses (and 2 very charming mules) hit the spot!! We had a wonderful experience! Fran was lovely when we checked in and out! Buddy and Ally (the dogs) kept us company throughout the night and made us feel secure! Mr. Duck and the various cats were also lovely to meet! We were the only campers that night, so it felt very private. Just a heads up that most campsites are directly next to another campsite! I would definitely come back with a larger group and reserve two adjacent campgrounds!

Great site, we will be back again. The tent sites and cabins look amazing. We stayed in the RV site with electric and water. It was easy to get to and set up. The only negative is that you are close to the road and get the traffic noise. There is lots of room to roam and let kids and dogs play.
