We called Temple of the Bird home for two nights before we head into the state park for our camping trip. It is by far the best place we have ever stayed in the Terlingua area. Mike was more than a gracious host, making sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable, opening his entire property up to us. The communal spaces are extremely comfortable and unique. This will be our forever spot every time that we are in the area. Thanks again Mike!

Great host. Awesome place. Very accommodating and nice, epic views, nice fire pit, great group of people, the owner offered us gumbo and red beans and rice, we hung out by the fire at night, played acoustic guitar and sang with some strangers, very happy, nice people. Camp sites are nice and spread out. Beautiful views.

Mikes facilities were in great shape, I slept well every night and was surrounded by wonderful people as well as a bevy of local events that Mike helped plug me into to make my trip more special than I could have previously imagined.

Very clean facilities and well laid out and organized campsites. Sites are elevated above a nice section of desert to take in. Very close to an entrance to Big Bend National Park and conveniences are close by, but not too close.

4 nights at Temple of the Bird
Mike has created a welcome and relaxed atmosphere for the weary traveler and the amped up ready to roar hiker/biker! The quarters are comfy, clean and the amenities are too notch. The bathrooms and showers are clean, well designed and more than expected from a “hostel”. This isn’t a hostel, it’s a community where you are met with what you need and expectations are exceeded. 4 nights at Casa de Keaveny Cabin and Campsite
There is something very charming and spiritual about Jim’s cabin and land. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe and at peace. Jim is a true Texas gem — I could listen to his stories for hours.
The cabin is clean and eclectically decorated. I enjoyed walking around and looking at his collected treasures. It’s in a wonderfully quiet area with no road noise or loud neighbors. It’s very easy to stare off into the mountains and lose yourself in the views, especially at sunrise or sunset. The nighttime sky alone was worth the 10-hour drive.
The Wi-Fi was stronger at this remote cabin than in my own suburban house. It would be very easy to work remotely from here if needed.
It felt like a real privilege to stay here. Jim isn’t going to become a millionaire renting out this cabin at such a low price. It feels like a true labor of love that he’s chosen to share with the world.
You’ll enjoy every minute here and find it hard to leave. I’m already planning next year’s trip.
Items I would bring: lots of drinking water, trash bags, a propane tank (like those used for a gas BBQ grill), and paper towels. Although Jim has all of this stocked, I found myself using more than I normally would and felt bad depleting his supplies.

Absolutely lovely and clean RV park. We made a last minute reservation and were able to pull in late, settle in, and slept uninterrupted for the entire night. Very quiet and safe location with clean and accessible bathrooms and showers.

This is a beautiful spot and Mike is a great host. Super chill vibes at Temple of the Bird. I really enjoyed the full, communal kitchen. Do be aware the last quarter mile or so is unpaved road. Worth it for the view!

1 night at Temple of the Bird
This is the best hostel/stay I could have asked for in Terlingua/near Big Bend. Insanely clean everything, insane views, incredible hospitality and we literally booked again a couple days after our stay when we needed another night because we loved it so much. The shipping container bunks were SO COMFY and as a woman I felt incredibly safe and Mike was an amazing host to say the least. Taught us about the locals and the places to eat and drink and we met so many incredible people in Terlingua and our bunk mates were awesome. 110% the place for you if you like getting to know the locals and relaxing with an amazing view of the desert mountains. Literally planning the next trip already lol. If you’re down for a laugh, good folks and good views this is totally for you.

Weekend Trip to Temple of the Bird
This place is so unique and fun and really captures the spirit of Terlingua. Mike is an incredible host and everyone I met here was so kind and cool. The property is safe, comfortable, clean and has all the amenities you could ask for. My friend and I stayed during a quiet couple days, but will definitely be back to experience a busier time because it looks like SO much fun. You absolutely have to stay here if you’re in the area!

We absolutely loved camping out on Jason's land! Conveniently located about 5 mins from Big Bend National Park with a nice little general store close by as well it really was the perfect location. We certainly enjoyed the use of a nice large firepit and the picnic tables. The outhouse was clean and convenient at the camp site and the showers a short distance away were a huge plus! We also highly appreciated Jason's helping us get one of our cars jumped the last morning. All in all would definitely stay again, and highly recommend this spot for anyone wanting to visit Big Bend!

I've stayed in Terlingua many times for over a decade, but won't need to find another place to stay ever again because this place totally outshines all the rest. The owner Mike is the most gracious host with a great sense of humor and just an all round nice guy. The accommodations are amazing for a campsite. You have fantastic views of the Chisos, super clean bathroom and beautiful showers, full access to the community kitchen, and a nice fire pit on the porch. Oh, and super close to the Ghostown. This place has it all and even has two stages to host bands and a bring your own bar area and lots of signs and unique decor to keep you entertained for hours. Seriously, the best place to stay.

Probably my favorite Hipcamp ever over my ~6 years of use. Terlingua is amazing, but wouldn’t have near as much charm without Temple Of The Bird and Mike to own/operate. Locals gravitate there because it’s such a cool hangout and it had the best views in town. I’ll always stop in to say “Hey” if I’m remotely close and stay there for any future visits to the area.

Mike’s hostel and campground is amazing! The communal space has all the amenities like a kitchen, seating area, flush toilets and shower, bonfire. The campsites are well marked. Mike is a wonderful and welcoming host! We enjoyed our time here.

we really enjoyed our two days stayed at Mike's place (temple of the bird). we reached right at the thanksgiving eve and the place was buzzing. food, music, campfire...it was such a cool experience at the heart of terlingua ghost town. If you like mingling with a crowd and make new friends, you are going to enjoy this place. Mike is an awesome host and helped with everything that we asked for. he replied to all my messages promptly and the decked out kitchen was a real plus. We rented the sleeping bunks which were affordable and cozy. terlingua itself is pretty cool with the dark sky and you can see all the stars. one thing to note, it is not exactly close to big bend, and having a car with high clearance, like a 4x4, really helps to move around. i hope i can go back just to stay for a few days and chill. thanks Mike and keep flippin'

Where to go
Northwestern Texas
The southwestern half of the Texas panhandle is often grouped together with West Texas and is home to the city of Lubbock. Geographically, it's part of the Llano Estacado, which extends into eastern New Mexico, among the largest mesas on the continent. Natural areas in the region include Big Spring State Park, Caprock Canyons State Park, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
The Trans-Pecos Region
The westernmost part of the state lies west of the Pecos River and is by far the least-populated area of the state. In fact, most of the region’s commercial activity takes place in the far west of town, in El Paso. Travel east from El Paso and you'll soon find yourself in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert, home to the towering peaks of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
The El Paso Area
Although El Paso is more known for its historic sites and urban activities, the city and its surrounding areas have plenty for outdoor adventurers. Popular spots include Franklin Mountains State Park, a hit among hikers, and Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site, which offers a fine mix of hiking and rock climbing opportunities, plus around 20 campsites.
Big Bend and Around
Encompassing Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and the surrounding areas, this part of West Texas is largely dominated by public lands. along with the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area and the Chinati Mountains State Natural Area. It gets its name from a large bend in the Rio Grande, which divides this region from neighboring Mexico.
