Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! The West entrance to Big Bend National Park is 23 miles from the camp. Big Bend Ranch State Park's East entrance is 38 miles from camp. The camp sits on 5 acres and is located 0.7 miles from Terlingua Ranch Road, which is a paved asphalt road leading to Hwy 118. The final 0.7 miles to the property consist of dirt and gravel roads maintained by the Property Owners Association of Terlingua Ranch (POATRI). These dirt and gravel roads leading to the camp are generally easily traversed, though they can become silty or muddy if it rains. In some areas, heavy rain may cause road flooding. We recommend driving an SUV or a truck, as low-profile cars may struggle depending on the road conditions that day. Please be aware that the roads within Terlingua Ranch, while publicly accessible, are located on private land. We kindly request that you not drive off of any roads, as the surrounding areas are all privately owned. While navigating the deeper parts of Terlingua Ranch can be challenging, reaching the camp is usually straightforward. We've driven in with a 3500 dually with a 20’ gooseneck horse trailer, and we’ve never encountered any issues. It’s easily accessible yet remote enough to showcase its pristine natural beauty. The surroundings are incredibly tranquil and serene. At night, under Nesting Star Camp's skies, the stars unveil a majestic tapestry that will leave you in awe. The night also awakens with the coyote calls, the gentle desert winds, and the possible flutter of a bat or owl hoot. We also have wild donkeys that roam the area, and you might hear them braying. Please avoid approaching them, though. We provide a composting toilet for your use. Please note that when we are not present to manage waste (#2), you will be responsible for removing the toilet liner bag and disposing of your waste in the provided trash cans. There is also a shower room, and we will supply solar shower bags for your use. If you’re not familiar with them, please research solar showers before booking. Essentially, they are bags you will be responsible for filling with water and placing in the sun to heat up. On a sunny day, you can achieve a temperature of around 115 degrees, although on cloudy days, it won’t heat beyond the ambient temperature. The camp features two uncovered decks for stargazing and one deck with a roof that is partially open on the sides, providing more shelter from the elements. Please be aware that this is an off-grid camp, meaning there is no running water or power on-site. You are required to bring your own water. Additionally, we request that you limit generator use to basic needs only and keep it off between 7 PM and 8 AM. Cell phone coverage on the property can be inconsistent, but on most days, you can expect to get 2-3 bars of 3G signal on Verizon and Google Fi. We personally use a cell phone booster and recommend one if you don't have one, on most days it can provide a 4-bar 3G service. Sometimes, you may need to find an elevated spot to obtain a strong signal. However, it’s important to note that reception can be unreliable, and we recommend you plan ahead. Starlink works very well here.

As a reminder, this is a remote site that is over an hour to the nearest town or highway via 4x4 high clearance roads. It is another hour to the nearest hospital or veterinary clinic. There is no cell service on the property. There is spotty cell service on near-by roads so dont rely on calling for help in an emergency. Back up communication or cell boosting is recommended. It is common to not see anyone out here for days. To promote a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, please come prepared and abide by the following rules and precautions: 1) Bring enough water - you will get dehydrated easily in the desert. 1 gallon per person/day is a good general rule for drinking, preparing food, etc. 2) Bring a secondary full can of gas (2.5 gallons or more) and have a full-size spare tire. 3) Bring a first aid kit that includes trauma bandages and tourniquet. 4) Follow a Leave No Trace principle. Please leave the campsite and surrounding area the same or even better than you found it. 5) Store food after preparation in animal proof container or vehicle. Do not keep in tent. Among other animals that are attracted to food, there is a population of black bears in the nearby Solitario. 6) Please remove all trash and waste upon departure. 7) Dogs are allowed on site (we love ours!) However, please be mindful of cleaning up after them. Be very cautious of the desert environment and wildlife. Besides the abundant thorns and stickers that pose harm, animals such as the Javelina consider a dog the same as a Coyote (enemy), and have been known to attack in packs when encountered. This could injure you and your dog. 8) Fires are welcome in the fire-ring but please bring your own firewood, keep the fire contained, and refrain from making fires in high wind conditions. We also require everyone to bring an extra gallon of water to completely douse fire and coals before leaving camp. Follow Brewster County fire bans during periods of high wind and fire concerns. 9) The property and immediate area has a rocky and uneven terrain that includes very large ravines and canyons, some with 50 foot sheer drops. The rocks and dirt around these areas can be very loose and unstable. Hiking around the property is at your own risk. Take precaution to avoid injury. 10) Remember that the surrounding areas are all private property so keep to the roads once outside of Laughing Coyote Canyon site. 11) Enjoy your time here. Being in a remote landscape promotes being one with nature. It can be humbling and exilirating at the same time. A grounding experience akin to how our ancestors felt with a need for self-reliance.

Rio Bravo Ranch is a family owned ranch that borders the Rio Grande and Casa Piedra Road. We have cultured a love for camping and the outdoors on this ranch as children and young adults. One day we were sitting on "the backside," enjoying the amazing vistas, solitude and a campfire when the idea came to us that we should share this amazing place with others seeking this type of experience. We tried to think about what makes camping enjoyable to us - no immediately adjacent campers, a nice fire ring/shade structure, a nice, large tent site and vistas with unobstructed views. There is no cell service on the property. There is spotty cell service on near-by roads so dont rely on calling for help in an emergency. Back up communication or cell boosting is recommended. It is common to not see anyone out here for days. To promote a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, please come prepared and abide by the following rules and precautions: 1) Bring enough water - you will get dehydrated easily in the desert. 1 gallon per person/day is a good general rule for drinking, preparing food, etc. 2) Bring a secondary full can of gas (2.5 gallons or more) and have a full-size spare tire. 3) Bring a first aid kit that includes trauma bandages and tourniquet. 4) Follow a Leave No Trace principle. Please leave the campsite and surrounding area the same or even better than you found it. 5) Store food after preparation in animal proof container or vehicle. Do not keep in tent. Among other animals that are attracted to food, there is a population of black bears in the nearby Solitario. 6) Please remove all trash and waste upon departure. 7) Dogs are allowed on site (we love ours!) However, please be mindful of cleaning up after them. Be very cautious of the desert environment and wildlife. Besides the abundant thorns and stickers that pose harm, animals such as the Javelina consider a dog the same as a Coyote (enemy), and have been known to attack in packs when encountered. This could injure you and your dog. 8) Fires are welcome in the fire-ring but please bring your own firewood, keep the fire contained, and refrain from making fires in high wind conditions. We also require everyone to bring an extra gallon of water to completely douse fire and coals before leaving camp. Follow Brewster County fire bans during periods of high wind and fire concerns. 9) The property and immediate area has a rocky and uneven terrain that includes very large ravines and canyons, some with 50 foot sheer drops. The rocks and dirt around these areas can be very loose and unstable. Hiking around the property is at your own risk. Take precaution to avoid injury. 10) Remember that the surrounding areas are all private property so keep to the roads once outside of Laughing Coyote Canyon site. 11) Enjoy your time here. Being in a remote landscape promotes being one with nature. It can be humbling and exilirating at the same time. A grounding experience akin to how our ancestors felt with a need for self-reliance.

Jose was very generous to let us have the camp to ourselves. We found a great flat spot for our tent (6 person size) and enjoyed having a campfire each night. Jose’s was one of the few places that we found that could have fires, so that was a plus. There were gorgeous sunsets each night, and the half moon was bright enough to navigate in the dark and see your shadow. Just follow his instructions and you’ll be fine and be mindful of your own trash. We had no issues keeping our food and trash in the car at night with any wildlife. The only “encounter” we had was with a little Chihuahuan Pocket Mouse that wanted to join us and curl up by the fire. We really had a great time and would gladly stay there again :)

My dad and I loved this campground as a way to round out our Big Bend trip. It’s convenient to both the national and state park, and the amenities can’t be beat—WiFi, huge showers, clean bathrooms, and some items for purchase (including firewood). We loved site 3 as well—it overlooked a tiny gulch and was set comfortably far from the other sites that you had privacy. David was attentive and quick to respond to our questions. Other reviews are correct in that the long gravel drive in can be a bit bumpy (my Promaster is admittedly not made for off-roading), but if you take it slow it’s perfectly fine. The only hiccup we experienced was hammering tent stakes into the ground—you can get a few inches, but you’ll likely eventually hit rock; luckily the topography of our site offered some buffer against the wind as it was set down lower than the sites behind us. We both agreed we would come back in a heartbeat if we ever visited the area again.
