The property borders a small creek and has abundant trees, and wildlife. Beautiful views from every vantage with a high field on one half of the property and a low bottom land near the creek where there are many options for a relaxing, private stay. Chose big sky or a more secluded spot. Incredible wildflowers on display in the spring. The property is not bordered by close neighbors or dense housing, just more land so sunsets and rises are wonderful and open. Low ambient light pollution at night means the stars are very bright (and so are the fireflies)! Guests are required to communicate estimated time of arrival well in advance. When arriving, make sure to meet Aaron or a designate at the red gate before entering further into the property. If tent camping, please do not bring glass containers, also you must pack out all garbage and waste. Inquire ahead of time to see if firewood is available to be gathered on site, or if you will need to bring your own. No uninvited guests without 24 hour prior approval, and additional guest fees paid. Also please no more than one dog per site.

Valkyrie Ranch is a 500 acre wildlife preserve and event venue located in Paige, Texas. The ranch is mostly wooded (about 300 acres) with native Loblolly pines, blackjack oaks, swamp oaks, and post oaks. Coushatte Recreation Ranch stands out as a unique destination in Bellville, Texas, thanks to its rich history and connection to the land once inhabited by the Coushatte Indians. Established in 1877 by the Nelius Family, the ranch began as a cotton and cattle farming operation, utilizing horses in the fields until 1948. In the 1950s, Trenckmann Nelius diversified the ranch by introducing chicken and egg production, while still raising cattle and growing maize to feed the chickens. In 1973, Trenckmann and Margie Nelius transformed their vision into reality by founding Coushatte Recreation Ranch, initially offering just 24 campsites. Over the years, the campground has expanded significantly to accommodate 225 sites, complete with full hookups for both 30 and 50 amp service. The campground's name pays homage to the Coushatte Indians, and visitors can explore an Indian Mound on the property, where numerous arrowheads have been discovered. After many years of dedicated management, Trenckmann and Margie passed the torch to their son Howard and his wife Pamela, who operated the ranch until November 2019. The campground is now under the ownership of George Jarkesy, who aims to enhance the experience for guests.

This is our second time here and we always have fun! Our kids didn’t stop till they find all the things in the scavenger hunt in the forest. My younger kid loved yo walk around “The Woods” as he call it. The host is superb!!!! Very helpful and checks out on us on how we are doing and got time to give stickers for the kids. The camping sites were spacious and the wooded area was really fun to explore, with paths crisscrossing throughout. The bathrooms and the outdoor shower were great. It's just a short distance to a trailhead leading down to the Colorado River which was a beautiful hike. A perfect rustic place to stay just half an hour from downtown Austin.

Fun property away from the city! Kids had a blast riding bikes through the enchanted forest. Outdoor shower doesn't look like much but felt OH SO DELIGHTFUL. Clean outhouse. Hosts were friendly and responsive.

The Happy Horse Hotel had everything we could ask for; from the cozy cabin, clean horse pens, nice outhouses, and onsite trails, to the nearby attractions such as the McKinney Roughs Nature Park, the Bastrop Museum, and the various local shops. Hollis and Beau run a top-notch place. I think my favorite thing other than being so close to McKinney Roughs, the out door shower. After a sweaty day of horse trailering, the shower and stars above was very refreshing and soothing.

I had a really great time camping here. Traveled down from Kansas City in my camper van, and was welcomed by both Beaux and Hollis, who were incredibly nice, and accommodating people. They made sure to give me a tour of the campsite, and gave me a list of items to discover in a scavenger hunt through their very well-cared for forest walk, which was full of wildlife and beautiful scenery. As a musician coming through for some rest, and inspiration.. I found The Happy Horse to fit my needs perfectly. This place is truly a gem.
