Cowee Campground has newly been made into a campground, previously undeveloped. We have left most of it undisturbed to maintain the natural and peaceful nature vibes. This land is a short distance off the main roads and small/private. All tent sites are in the shaded forest and RV hookups are just a few steps away with hardwoods filling out and providing partial shade. It's a quiet area with the sounds of nature and leaves rustling. We hope you'll appreciate and enjoy the beauty and tranquility as much as we do. If you want to car/truck camp without hookups we have space for that too. Just let us know.
We have a beautiful 4 bathroom bathhouse, with ADA shower and another bathroom with clawfoot tub/shower and private back deck. 2 large firepits with Andirondack chairs and a separate picnic table and grill area. There is a large communal Yoga/Event deck and covered Bar/Hangout area beneath - hammock, bar top, darts and it's own firepit as well. Plus Corn hole and Horseshoe pits for your enjoyment.

Cowee is the best campground we’ve ever been to - and we’ve been to a lot all up and down the east coast. Tanya has clearly designed this campground to every last detail with an aesthetic hand. From the campsites themselves and their views, to the public spaces, conveniences of a laundry room to bathrooms which look like bathrooms out of a camp beautiful magazine. And Tanya is absolutely fabulous - responsive and very caring. We are definitely coming back!

We've been waiting for so long for our trip to Waterfall Heaven, and when our time to pack was getting closer, the weather was showing rain for the whole week we were supposed to be there... That was a little discouraging because we camp with 8 dogs and 2 crazy boys in a tent and I was worried everything will be way too wet and dirty and cold but I was not going to let this gem of a place go 😂 and what an amazing beautiful and serene place this spot is! The weather didn't matter, we had fun and the boys were in the water every day (even in 48°f), the dogs had so much space to run and sniff and explore and we even got a chance to do some activities in nearby towns (Stumphouse Tunnel in nearby city of Wallhala, SC and Foxfire Museum near the campsite was amazing)!
What saved us was the fact we were able to put our 10x18 tent under the huge wooden gazebo right by the waterfall (you need to remove the tables first and they are heavy!) and that kept our tent dry inside and out. The cooking area under the smaller gazebo was perfect for us preparing meals in the rain (we've put one of the tables there and were able to stay dry while eating).
The hike up the hill to see the bigger waterfall is worth the view and not having cellphone reception or internet at the campsite was the best break I secretly wished for 😂
We have another trip booked in March 2026 and I'm hoping I'll be able to also score a week in summer 2027! Thank you DeeDee for having us!

We had an enjoyable time at the campground. I have a van camper class B and site 6 is plenty large enough. The restrooms and showers are very nice and clean. The deck and area under are very nice place to relax and party or just enjoy the outdoors.

Fantastic place to stay. Area is well kept by the owners. Fall asleep to the sound of the river. This place is large and can handle a very large group or you can have it all to yourself. There is a hike up the hill to a beautiful waterfall. It's not an easy path, but it's worth it. Highly recommend this camp, you won't regret it!

I’ve been bringing my family here for the past few years, and it’s a great property that we always look forward to returning. Dee Dee and her son maintain the property well (grass is always cut, trees appear safe, and shelter and bathrooms are always clean), and I’ve never been disappointed with our stay. Word to the wise: If you have a camper you might want to park up top vs next to the bathrooms, because the apple tree you park under will drop palm-sized apples on your roof in the Fall.

What a beautiful location for a getaway! Tanya was a perfect host and answered all our questions and was very friendly and accommodating!
The site was clean and there's a nice area for communal bonfires.
I highly recommend this campground if you want quiet and it's walking distance from the Sheffield mine!

This campground has all the bases covered. There was a lot of charming cow mooing from a farm down the hill. I was shocked by the bathrooms. They are almost like little cabins. Made of salvaged materials with beautiful porcelain sinks and even one with a claw foot tub that looks out on a balcony with a view of rolling hills, wild flowers and pure natural beauty.
There are so many thoughtful details that create a hospitable atmosphere. The tent sites are perfectly flat in little hollowed out half circles surround by ferns and beautiful trees. The RV sites have individual water pumps and electricity! There’s a picnic area with a set of big picnic tables and grills adjacent to a set of fire pits with Adirondack chairs. There is yet another communal space that is covered by a giant deck perfect for a yoga retreat. This is the perfect spot to host a large group or bring a crew of kids. Above the camp, they run the cutest gem mine I’ve ever seen. It has a lily pad pond that you can look out into while panning for gems. Tanya is the most gracious host. She was so welcoming and attentive. Thank you Tanya!

Where to go
Lake Hiwassee
With almost 180 miles of shoreline surrounding its over 6,000 acres, Lake Hiwassee connects with Appalachia Lake and Lake Chatuge to form the Chain of Lakes. Surrounded by a peaceful mountain setting, the lakes are a popular destination for water activities like water skiing, swimming, and kayaking. Anglers can drop lines for striped bass, yellow perch, and bluegill. Family-friendly RV parks in the area feature back-in and pull-through campsites with water, electricity, and dump stations. Rustic tent camping spots offer a quieter escape with nearby potable water on tap.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Attracting millions of visitors every year, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is about 60 miles northeast of Murphy. Stunning mountain scenery with dense forest covers over 500,000 acres, where hikers especially enjoy the 850 miles of trails crisscrossing the park, including a climb up Mount LeConte, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. Look for such diverse wildlife as bobcats, foxes, woodchucks, white-tailed deer, and bats. Tent, RV, and group campsites offer fire rings, flush toilets, drinking water, dump stations, and full hookups for electricity. For more of an escape, permitted backcountry camping is available.
Nantahala National Forest
Similar in size to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nantahala National Forest spans over 800 square miles and is the largest of four national forests in North Carolina. The name derives from Cherokee, meaning “Land of the Noonday Sun.” With vast changes in elevation, from 1,200 feet along the Hiwassee River to 5,800 feet at Lone Bald, Nantahala boasts breathtaking waterfalls that are especially impressive in spring. Campgrounds in the area range from backcountry to full-service, many of which feature picnic areas, drinking water, toilets, and showers—some have boat ramps.
When to go
Although summer is peak camping season in North Carolina, thanks to long days and warm weather, the fall months may be preferable for some Hipcampers. Fall foliage in the Murphy area creates a picturesque landscape of oranges, yellows, and reds. The cooler weather can make for more pleasant hikes, too. Summer draws the biggest crowds, so be sure to book campsites early. Spring is another noteworthy time of year to visit, not only for the milder weather but also because the melting snow creates more dramatic waterfalls while blooming wildflowers deliver a colorful backdrop.
