WINTER BOOKINGS: Our driveway may be impassible during winter weather and we recommend snow tires, snow chains, and/or 4x4 during the winter months due to ice. We do shut down the running water during the winter to prevent the pipes from freezing. We will provide guests with 5 gallon drinking jugs with a dispenser to use, and the toilet still has water to flush. But the shower, sink, tub, hose, and bidet will be shut down during these months. We are located only 15 minutes from Asheville and a few miles from the parkway, surrounded by 14 acres of forest. There is a private hot tub that is all yours! Sauna available upon request. Professional massage therapist onsite as well. The house is hand crafted with unique creative touches for your delight. We look forward to having you! This home was built in 2019 by an expert craftsman with the vision of making it cozy and spacious with sweet artistic details and lots of care and love. The home is 300 sq feet but feels much more grand inside. You will be nestled on 14 pristine acres of forest, with two decks, your own personal private hot tub, and a spring fed creek not too far down the driveway. There is a gas fireplace outdoors on the porch, and an outdoor fire pit for your use as well. The house has a queen size bed in the upper loft, a large twin day bed on the first level, and an extra loft with camping mats if needed above the day bed. The house can comfortably sleep 3 and up to 4 or 5 especially if a couple of them are children or petite people. The house has a full kitchen and bathroom, living room area and two lofts. For now there is a composting toilet that is easy to maintain and we are happy to help you with it if you’re on the land for more than a few days. The main house is about 30 yards up the hill, and although somewhat close, you will have plenty of privacy. We are close if you need us, but we try to give all of our guests ultimate privacy. The house is under a huge magnolia tree, so it stays shaded in the summer and quite cool. There is an AC unit and heaters in the house as well. There is a personal hot tub, which is screened in, and located on the front deck of the house now. You will love it! There is a back deck that is only for meditation, yoga, and bird watching, and we ask that folks stay silent on the back deck if they use it. Pets are welcome at an extra charge of $40 a night. If anything is needed down at the house we are available. Much of the time there is a massage therapist on site, so if you are interested in getting Bodywork please just inquire about prices and availability. There is also a wood-fired sauna on the property, so if you would like to sauna please let us know. And an added bonus is that you are only 5 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and LOTS of great hiking, great restaurants, bars, coffee shops, art galleries and more. Asheville is 15 minutes from the tiny cabin and Weaverville is 10 minutes away. On any given day you might see a family a deer, turkeys or bears in the front yard. There is a spring fed creek on the edge of the property you are welcome to soak your feet in, and there is incredible hiking just a few miles away. You are welcome to explore the 13 acres of property as well that the home is located on. This is not a place for parties. Our neighbors are about 200 yards down the hill so we try to respect their privacy and keep it quiet. That is why we have made the back deck a retreat/silent deck. Maximum of 4 guests.

James landed on the property in 2009, built a small dairy barn and milked 3 cows for a couple years before building the two cabins. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters. Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours. Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. We loved the tiny cabin! My partner and I didn’t feel cramped, it feels much bigger on the inside. Perfect location - it was quiet, scenic, and convenient to get to. Great amenities as well - we loved getting to use the fire pit and hot tub, especially after a long day of hiking. Highly recommended!

Ravens Ridge was a beautiful getaway. With rustic charms and spectacular views.... Even from bed! Cantral to places to explore. Went to Bryson City for the train ride through the mountains. Gatlinburg is so close as well to find fun to get into. Definitely be prepared for the walk up to the cabin but it was a beautiful and well needed retreat.

Weekend Trip to Mountain Top Cabins

Wow, expectations exceeded! Doug and Eddy were delightful and helpful hosts on the grounds. We had a group of 12 women meeting up for a mountain getaway :). This property is basically "choose your own adventure" - between going for runs and hikes, hanging out on the porch, leisurely enjoying the views, fire pit with snacks and stars, and napping in the hammocks - we all wanted to stay a few more days! We will be back, for sure. This was everything we wanted the weekend to be and more! A few notes -- there's no electricity provided wired into the cabins, but they do have a battery pack with usb ports you can ask to use (we brought our own chargers, no problem). Theres also lanterns and candles in each cabin and bathroom (lovely touch) but would recommend bringing a handful of additional headlamps for ease of getting around! Also, no issue for our group, but the hike in and out really is no joke :) A pleasant challenge with an amazing reward. Five Stars.

What a wonderful place to stay! I'm a middle-aged woman with joint pain, and initially I was nervous that the crawl to the bed in the loft would be too much for me, but I figured out how to shuffle along, and by the time I left I was so sad to be going and didn't even feel bothered by the tight maneuvering. I stayed for a week while in town for a work thing. I primarily was there later at night and it was so special. The whole space is so thoughtfully done, the lighting just builds the mood, and there are so many wonderful touches. I used the gas fire pit outside a lot more than I expected, and I loved sitting in the hot tub listening to all of the sounds of nature. I absolutely hope to come back in the future! I didn't get to try the sauna, which hopefully I will be able to do in the future. And Kellie was very helpful throughout the stay with any of the needs I had.

I truly enjoyed staying in James’ Hilltop Cabin. The cabin itself was cozy and charming. There is another cabin close by but it still felt private. The land that the cabin is on has some great trails with beautiful views. James was incredibly responsive and helpful and accommodated me on short notice. I definitely plan on staying again next time I’m in the area! 10/10

We enjoyed our stay at Kellie’s place. It is in a quiet location and the house is such a cute little gem. It had everything we needed for a quick weekend trip. The hot tub was great to use and is in a private setting which fit perfectly with the whole ambience. There is a sauna on site for a fee which we didn’t get to use it unfortunately, due to our time limitations, I hope to be back and step up that relaxation game a bit. Kellie is very kind and it is true when she tells you to look out for her little doggies, they will run up to the car. They are extremely sweet and friendly and we enjoyed their enthusiasm.

Sweet little spot that has all the basics covered for a short retreat. The cabin was built with care and is quirky, but fun and romantic. Anyone with mobility issues should be aware that the staircase might be very challenging (steep, narrow). The hosts are very accommodating and easily available if needed. Would recommend to anyone who is looking to get away for a few days. Plenty of trails on site if you don't want to leave the premises. Beware that the trail to the Cliffs is really difficult to find on the side closest to the property. I recommend walking up the road and taking the part of the trail closer to the Cliffs, in between two residences.

Where to go

Jones Gap State Park

Just past the border into South Carolina is Jones Gap State Park, a massive 13,000 acre reserve featuring two majestic waterfalls, over 60 miles of hiking trails, and the impressive Middle Saluda River. Fish for brown and rainbow trout from a riverside campsite, or birdwatch for native and migratory species. Many campsites don’t allow campfires, so bring alternative heating and cooking sources. Hipcampers planning to explore Jones Gap should be sure to make a day-use reservation ahead of time.

Chimney Rock State Park

Northeast of Hendersonville, Chimney Rock State Park is named after its towering rock spire that reaches more than 300 feet—climb the tower itself or take an elevator. The park also has hiking trails to Hickory Nut Falls, as well as more rugged routes to nearby Eagle Rock and Rumbling Bald. This park is also a popular destination for bouldering, with many rock faces in the area ripe for climbing. Nearby glamping spots and RV campgrounds are available.

Mount Mitchell State Park

Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and the viewpoint from the summit’s observation deck is well worth the strenuous hike to reach it. Mount Mitchell State Park also includes moderate and difficult trails for exploring the nearby Pisgah National Forest and its waterfalls, mountains, and rivers. Stay at a nearby RV park equipped with full hookups and wifi.

When to go

Hendersonville has the most to offer in hot summer months, with July temperatures reaching average highs of 85°F. Clear summer skies make for amazing views from the mountain peaks, however, this also means bigger crowds in more popular parks. Choosing some of the larger state parks in the area can be a good way to enjoy a more peaceful experience. Hendersonville winters are fairly cold (average January lows of 25°F), and some trails, campsites, and attractions close for the season, though some trails are open in wintertime for those with the right equipment.
