We offer guests an off-grid and authentic Appalachian experience at our hike-in cabins and campsites located on 500 private acres atop the Newfound Mountains in Western North Carolina! Our Trailhead is located 45 minutes west of Asheville, NC and our hike-in trail is 2 miles long with 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The hike-in trail utilizes an old forest service road which follows a creek providing verdant landscapes and soothing sounds as you make your way up the mountain to our cabins and campsites. We have two antique Appalachian cabins on-site and two campsites available. Our cabins and campsites are priced per person and can be reserved individually or collectively through an entire property buyout. A hearty and healthy breakfast is served each morning in our Main Lodge and is included and you'll never pay a cleaning fee on this mountain because we believe in Southern hospitality! Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay. Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Cabin #2 also features a full bathroom with and a tree-house like view from the front porch! Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. Camp 1 and Camp 2 both measure 12’x15’ and feature a soft grassy surface surrounded by natural boulder walls. Both campsites sit beside our neighboring property owned by the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and feature a long-range mountain views. Guests at our campsites are welcomed to breakfast daily and have full access to the restroom facilities in the Main Lodge.

That’s why I created the Waldhaus resort.During the past years, the Sawmill has become my favorite place to spend quality time in what I call "Cabin Living" which I love so much. Nearly every day there is a small challenge, nothing comes easy, but all the coziness and comfort is there. The water is supplied by a spring above the mill. Electricity is generated by solar technology and a generator. All refrigeration and cooking appliances are propane; and so is the basic heat (propane again) - and a very old Jotul wood stove will do the rest. I sleep a lot on the day bed in the living room so the Sawmill can be comfortably rented for up to 4 guests. The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom.We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

Raven ridge is a 5.0 acre property with plenty of botanical appeal, Appalachian charm and mountain views. James landed on the property in 2009, built a small dairy barn and milked 3 cows for a couple years before building the two cabins. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters. Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours. Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. If you're looking to escape to the mountains, look no further! Wild Ridge Trail is a place where you can come to unwind, relax, and take in the fresh air of our N.C. mountains! We are located only 10/15 minutes from all of the exciting things Asheville has to offer and just as close to the charming small town of Black Mountain! The cabin at wild ridge is OFF GRID (meaning no power or running water) but I promise, with our solar panels and rain collection system you won't miss being ON the grid at all! The cabin and the drive (or hike) up was designed for the adventurous at heart! So, drive on up if you have 4WD or AWD and if you don't, no worries! Just park in the designated space, grab your gear and hike on up! (The hike in is steep... about 300 ft but takes less than 5 minutes) We have a cooler up there for any perishables you may have, just bring ice :) Please note: We have to close the outdoor heated shower during the cold winter months, however we provide an all season 5 gallon solar shower bag to use during this time. We also have a list at the cabin of other places nearby that provide hot showers in the winter months for a small fee. In the rare event that heavy snow is expected, we will have to close the road leading up to the cabin because of its steepness. If this occurs, you will be given a full refund for the cancellation. To heat the cabin, there is a un-vented wall mounted heater that heats the space really well! Since the cabin is insulated, the heater works quick to heat the small area up so you will stay nice and cozy!

Our Hip Camp has a variety of sites from tent camping to small, heated "glamping" cabins. The location is rural and very quiet, about a 30min drive from downtown Asheville and 20 minutes from groceries and other restaurants. There is a small family owned bakery and many local farms and trails nearby. We are a 15min drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all of the beautiful scenic views provided year round. There is a short, steep trail on the property leading up to a bench perfect for solo reflection or admiring the wildlife and distant mountain range. The property is a hill sloping up from field to forest with a small creek that drains into a pond filled with koi fish. Our property is in the mountains so be prepared to walk up and down a hill/stairs. The shared bathroom, a small communal kitchen and infrared sauna are located in a separate heated building (Oak - at the bottom of the property).

When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling. Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood. You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7. Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more. Whether it’s the absence of electricity (in the cabin), the quiet of the country, no city glow in the night sky, or the once common experience of the natural world dominating over human-made or human-crafted things, it’s astonishing for many of us to see and feel and experience without constant communications via text and email and the distractions of modern life. Weekend Trip to Black Barn Farm

We love this Hipcamp. It’s our second stay and we will be back! The owners are so nice. John even gifted us some fresh venison and sausages that made our breakfast better than ever! We stayed in the wooden cabin first and loved it. Second time we stayed in the lake front cabin and really loved the lake view with the fire pit. I’d recommend this place to anyone visiting Emerald Isle and Moorhead city. It’s a convenient location to shops for anything you want to grill. And the Emus are such a cool experience they are like little dinosaurs. Thanks y’all!

Weekend Trip to Watershed Nature Retreat

The perfect break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life! The cabin is cozy, yet bright and open feeling. The bed has a comfortable high-quality mattress, and it is was wonderful waking up to the stunning view of sky and mountains. In the fall the surrounding colors are beautiful and golden leaves rain down around. You have to be comfortable walking up and down hills, but if you are it is so very worth it. We will definitely be coming back!

What a rare treat! Josh and Fanny’s family was so welcoming — kind and attentive without ever being all up in my business. I loved using their sauna and the yoga/exercise room, which had just the right mix of dumbbells and equipment to help me stay on track with my fitness goals. The coffee, espresso, and tea setup was top-notch too. I never felt like I was “camping” at all — more like staying at a peaceful retreat. Honestly, if I were an author, this would be the perfect place to write a novel!

We had such a great time visiting the summit cabin, and it was equipped with everything you would typically need on a camping trip! Hans was very nice and brought all of our things to the cabin, and we hiked the steep but beautiful trail up to the summit. We brought our two dogs that absolutely loved running around the property, and we even explored the trails in the woods behind the cabin and they were endless. We went on a chilly weekend, and were so surprised at how warm the gas units inside got to warm up the cabin! Such a beautiful cabin, and we cannot wait to come back again.

Weekend Trip to The Cabin At Wild Ridge Trail

Our parents stayed at the cabin over a fall weekend in late October and it was perfect! We had a campfire, an outing to Asheville and a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and spent a rainy day cozied up in the cabin playing card games and chatting. You are immersed in the trees at the cabin and they have done such a wonderful job of making every part feel well thought out and cared for. The toilet and shower felt cozy, even outside! Deserae responded to all my messages promptly and communicated well! Our parents, visiting from Ireland, said it was one of our best vacation spots and they had such a refreshing time.

Stayed in Cabin 2 for a night, the hike up was definitely worth it! I would definitely recommend packing light and bringing a sleeping bag and good headlight/flashlight. Doug, the caretaker was soo welcoming and accommodating. For anyone following the coordinates that are sent to you with the directions I would just follow the Google directions under the name of the cabins. The coordinates took me to a private driveway in Google maps. Definitely recommend this place for a nice unplugged time.

I cannot emphasize enough how beautiful this spot is. The stream, the trees, the quiet. I have camped in almost every state, and this is easily one of my favorite sites. The road in a bit bumpy, but doable. I easily made the trek in a civic. The road is also great for taking a scenic walk. The covered porch was perfect for a rainy afternoon, and the heater was a welcome addition on cool autumn evenings. Close to the stunning Joyce Kilmer Wilderness & Nantahala National Forest. I hope to come back again!

3 nights at The Cabin At Wild Ridge Trail

This was such a cool cabin. Waking up to the trees right outside the big garage door was amazing. The swing was such a highlight! We had a perfect vacation here. Warning though, pack light unless you have a 4w drive vehicle that can make it up the trail (we didn't). The hike up to the cabin is a strenuous if you have a lot of things to carry.
