Raven Ridge

2 sites · Lodging3 acres · Marshall, NC
James landed on the property in 2009, built a small barn and milked 3 cows for 3 years. Then, started planting trees, gardening the hillsides. He married in 2015 and has three Daughters with Sofi, originally from Sweden. Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months of saturday for less than $5k. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours. Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason ! We really like hosting and nearly everyone enjoys their stay.

The Waldhaus Resort

4 sites · Lodging60 acres · Barnardsville, NC
Waldhaus Resort is a special place surrounded by the Pisgah National Forrest. Pure nature close to a thriving metropolitan area. We offer the Sawmill and the Summit!I have been an engineer, corporate executive and world traveler all my life. Born and raised in Switzerland I speak German, French, English and a little Spanish. My passion is the outdoors, hunting, fishing and cooking . My other calling is to entertain people which share the same passions. That’s why I created the Waldhaus resort.During the past years, the Sawmill has become my favorite place to spend quality time in what I call "Cabin Living" which I love so much. Nearly every day there is a small challenge, nothing comes easy, but all the coziness and comfort is there.  The water is supplied by a spring above the mill. Electricity is generated by solar technology and a generator. All refrigeration and cooking appliances are propane; and so is the basic heat (propane again) - and a very old Jotul wood stove will do the rest. I sleep a lot on the day bed in the living room so the Sawmill can be comfortably rented for up to 4 guests. The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom. We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

Trout Creek Campgrounds

22 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents7 acres · Tuckasegee, NC
When you think about camping, does your mind automatically think of a tent and a fire? Or is it more of an RV in a campground? Do you have arguments of whether or not your way of “sleeping outside” is actually camping? Well, opinions of all kinds obviously exist, but it’s true: camping exists in many forms. So whether you’re a newbie to camping and you don’t know where to start, or you’re a seasoned pro looking for inspiration, here are some kinds of camping to get you started on your next getaway. To backcountry camp, you generally have to go somewhere inaccessible from roads. It can be a mile away from the trailhead or somewhere in the middle of a mountain range during a weeklong trek. The point is you’re away from civilization. You pack in what you can carry, are never without a Swiss Army Knife, and (hopefully) pack out all of your waste and leave everything looking as good (or better) than when you came. ALL BOOKINGS ARE AUTOMATICALLY OFF-CREEK. UPGRADES ARE AVAILABLE DEPENDANT ON AVAILABILITY. SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE HOWEVER ALL PAYMENTS ARE NONREFUNDABLE.

Nantahala: Cabins & Campsites

13 sites · Lodging, Tents7 acres · NC
We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin. When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there. Thanks for reading this little tid bit about us. We love to explore the mountains and are excited to share our cabins with you.

Spiral Mountain Farm

5 sites · Lodging, Tents34 acres · Canton, NC
Spiral Mountain is an herbal and agro-forestry farming initiative on 34 acres set in the pristine Appalachian mountains featuring a newly installed Lavender farm, walking trails, fire pits, creeks, forests and fields. The newly built log cabins are on grid, with electric, wifi and fresh filtered mountain spring water. We have planted roughly fifty fruit trees in our new orchard as well as several hundred native woodland medicinals — including goldenseal, cohosh, wild ginger, and false unicorn root. Hundreds of lavender plants have been installed and we are continuously adding more native and herbal species to create a robust herbal workshop community and foraging grounds. Travel off the beaten path to a mountain getaway and enjoy the lush tranquil forest and fresh air. In this setting you can get away from the noise of city life and enjoy the real Appalachian mountains. There is one cabin for vacation rental -- The Slippery Elm. The Slippery Elm is a newly built 2 story log home with one bedroom and a loft space, one full bathroom, porch spaces, fully stocked kitchen, bbq grill, fire pits, camping areas, comfortable dining and lounge spaces located 36 miles from downtown Asheville. The Slipppery Elm sleeps four with a queen bedroom downstairs and two twins upstairs in the loft. Travel down a beautiful winding road to arrive at a serene destination. If you are looking to get away from it all, here you will experience the peaceful outdoors in a camp setting with all the amenities of a resort stay. The property features a community cabin called Sassafras Lounge with laundry, showers and toilets. There is also a small oven and hot plate in Sassafras Lounge for those who want to cook there. Enjoy a bonfire, have a barbeque, play games, work on a book, have tea, explore the forest, enjoy the native botanicals, relax and be at peace in a beautiful and comfortable mountain setting. You can stay in the Slippery Elm cabin and also pitch a tent if you wish. There are 7 cabins on the property and you may meet other travelers and live-in herbalists and groundskeepers while having a full private cabin for your group. You may also camp on the property in one of our Orchard Sites. We have many events on the calendar and you may choose to stay with us during one of our workshops where you can meet other local herbalists, herbal and agroforestry farmers and medicine makers and take part in our community driven event.

Andy's Trout Farm and Cabins

10 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents200 acres · Otto, NC
Andy's Trout Farm opened to the public in 1965.  It was founded and developed by Andy and Hazel Cope, with some help from their family.  In the late 1950's, while Andy was operating a service station in Dillard, GA, many travelers inquired about places to fish and camp.  The Copes used some mountain land, which they owned in the Betty's Creek Community, to develop Betty's Creek Recreation Area!  Later, they changed the name to Andy's Trout Farm and built rental cabins along the stream. They had found the ideal spot to raise rainbow trout . The cold mountain stream flowing from the mountains of North Carolina into Betty's Creek provided the water needed. It took the family several months to get a hatchery in operation for hatching, and ponds built for growing the trout. They began running the fish farm and selling trout that were caught from the catch-out ponds. They dressed the catch and even had a restaurant across the road from the fishing office! In 1968 Andy and Hazel Cope were granted the "Farm Family of the Year Awards"-  in both North Carolina and Georgia!
