This site is accessed via a short trail through the trees down a gentle, sloping hill, and finally by a short stairway, and as such it may not be easily accessible for campers with limited mobility. Located on the grounds of the Duckpond Pottery, The Quack Shack is a secluded treehouse perched along the banks of the French Broad River. The structure is an 8x10 A-frame that transforms via a hinged wall into an open-air cabana with a charming deck that affords spectacular views of the French Broad River and surrounding countryside. The interior of the Quack Shack, with its vaulted 11-foot ceiling and earthen plaster walls, provides a warm glow in a rainforest environment. It is furnished with a comfortable seating area surrounding a coffee table that can be easily converted to a full-size queen bed at night. On the outside deck are beach chairs and a chimenea available for use. The quack shack has electric power (1 outlet only). Amenities include a bathroom located a short walk away at the main building as well as an open-air on-demand shower located off the bathroom on a deck overlooking the French Broad River. Morning coffee and tea is available at The Tea Hut located just a hop, skip, and jump from the treehouse. A new two person wood fired hot tub and cold plunge is now located just off the steps of the treehouse. (Contact us if you’d like to reserve it during your stay). NOTE: The Duckpond Pottery is a working studio pottery and gallery that is open to the public. It is also home to occasional open-air house concerts on the deck at the pottery. There's a lot of breakable stuff, tempting treehouses (that might be occupied by other guests!), sites that are within earshot of each other, and hazards that aren't a good fit for kids. THE NEIGHBORHOOD The campground is located in the "Emma" area of Asheville. Also known as "Wild Wild West Asheville" (to distinguish it from regular West Asheville which is about 5 minutes' drive away), this is the last bastion of non-gentrified Asheville. Emma is completely un-zoned, so you get an interesting mixture of mostly residential and agricultural properties that scatter the area. The campground itself is tucked away in a 2-acre wooded valley. We're about 10-15 minutes' drive away from downtown Asheville and a $12-$15 Uber ride. Unfortunately, public transportation is not very accessible from the campground. WHAT'S NEARBY? - There are approximately a bajillion breweries in Asheville, many of which are within 5-15 minutes away. - Downtown Asheville (~10-15 minutes), West Asheville (~5-10 minutes) and the River Arts District (~5 minutes) are full of city life fun - amazing restaurants, live music, shopping, art galleries and did we mention breweries? -So much hiking! Choose your own adventure - waterfalls, mountain-top views, fog-drenched valleys, rambling rivers. There are some trails about 20 minutes away, but to get to the good stuff, you'll drive 40-90+ minutes. - White water rafting ~60-90 minutes away - Tubing down the French Broad River is the ultimate way to chill out in the sun. French Broad Outfitters, Zen Tubing and Lazy Otter are some companies that can take care of all the details for you. These are all 10-20 minutes away. OUR HISTORY We discovered this property in 2017, and quite by chance! We had finished working a seasonal job in Colorado and were on our way out to the coast to look into starting our own business. We happened to come through Asheville and casually stumbled across this property. Long-story-short, we put in a bid on the property. It was accepted, and now we have a real fixer-upper on our hands! Here's some history on the property as reported by the previous owners: The road you park on was the old county road, a long, long time ago. The couple who sold us the property is elderly, and the blue house you pass on the left on the way to park was where the wife grew up. In fact, that enormous pine tree on your right as you come up the road was the old lady's Christmas tree as a child. The jiu-jitsu gym used to be an auction house. Then it was used as a dance hall. Then it became a cabinet-making space and finally a timber frame-making space. Over the past year we've converted it into a jiu-jitsu gym, although you can still see plenty of "upcycled" remnants of previous uses, all around the gym. The campground area itself was slated to be turned into a trailer park. You can tell that the area was partially graded at one point or another. Thanks to that initiative, we have some convenient paths all around! They decided not to follow through on setting up trailer pads since it was more money than they had bargained for. After that, the space was used as a black-market dump! Luckily the city shut it down, and after two spring seasons of cleaning up back there, we're left with what you see! We're going to continue to pour our hearts, souls, creativity and probably more than just a little money into making "The Baying Hound Campground" a fun place to crash for a couple days while taking in all that is Asheville. For EXAMPLE, 2 cars = 8 campers total. If you only have two cars but more than eight people, YOU MUST select the "Extra Person" Extra for each night they are camping. Please select these extras at checkout. If you have questions about this PLEASE message me prior to booking. Our 95-acre farm was once owned by the Davis family who predominantly raised dairy cattle. Two porta-potties are on the farm and private porta-potties are available for rent. Groups of eight or more are required to rent a porta potty should you not bring your own toilet system with you. We do not allow the use of our small wooded areas as toilets. The cabin and the drive (or hike) up was designed for the adventurous at heart! So, drive on up if you have 4WD or AWD and if you don't, no worries! Just park in the designated space, grab your gear and hike on up! (The hike in is steep... about 300 ft but takes less than 5 minutes) We have a cooler up there for any perishables you may have, just bring ice :) Please note: We have to close the outdoor heated shower during the cold winter months, however we provide an all season 5 gallon solar shower bag to use during this time. We also have a list at the cabin of other places nearby that provide hot showers in the winter months for a small fee. In the rare event that heavy snow is expected, we will have to close the road leading up to the cabin because of its steepness. If this occurs, you will be given a full refund for the cancellation. Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay. Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Cabin #2 also features a full bathroom with and a tree-house like view from the front porch! Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. Camp 1 and Camp 2 both measure 12’x15’ and feature a soft grassy surface surrounded by natural boulder walls. Both campsites sit beside our neighboring property owned by the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and feature a long-range mountain views. THE NEIGHBORHOOD The campground is located in the "Emma" area of Asheville. Also known as "Wild Wild West Asheville" (to distinguish it from regular West Asheville which is about 5 minutes' drive away), this is the last bastion of non-gentrified Asheville. Emma is completely un-zoned, so you get an interesting mixture of mostly residential and agricultural properties that scatter the area. The campground itself is tucked away in a 2-acre wooded valley. We're about 10-15 minutes' drive away from downtown Asheville and a $12-$15 Uber ride. Unfortunately, public transportation is not very accessible from the campground. WHAT'S NEARBY? - There are approximately a bajillion breweries in Asheville, many of which are within 5-15 minutes away. - Downtown Asheville (~10-15 minutes), West Asheville (~5-10 minutes) and the River Arts District (~5 minutes) are full of city life fun - amazing restaurants, live music, shopping, art galleries and did we mention breweries? -So much hiking! Choose your own adventure - waterfalls, mountain-top views, fog-drenched valleys, rambling rivers. There are some trails about 20 minutes away, but to get to the good stuff, you'll drive 40-90+ minutes. - White water rafting ~60-90 minutes away - Tubing down the French Broad River is the ultimate way to chill out in the sun. French Broad Outfitters, Zen Tubing and Lazy Otter are some companies that can take care of all the details for you. These are all 10-20 minutes away. OUR HISTORY We discovered this property in 2017, and quite by chance! We had finished working a seasonal job in Colorado and were on our way out to the coast to look into starting our own business. We happened to come through Asheville and casually stumbled across this property. Long-story-short, we put in a bid on the property. It was accepted, and now we have a real fixer-upper on our hands! Here's some history on the property as reported by the previous owners: The road you park on was the old county road, a long, long time ago. The couple who sold us the property is elderly, and the blue house you pass on the left on the way to park was where the wife grew up. In fact, that enormous pine tree on your right as you come up the road was the old lady's Christmas tree as a child. The jiu-jitsu gym used to be an auction house. Then it was used as a dance hall. Then it became a cabinet-making space and finally a timber frame-making space. Over the past year we've converted it into a jiu-jitsu gym, although you can still see plenty of "upcycled" remnants of previous uses, all around the gym. The campground area itself was slated to be turned into a trailer park. You can tell that the area was partially graded at one point or another. Thanks to that initiative, we have some convenient paths all around! They decided not to follow through on setting up trailer pads since it was more money than they had bargained for. After that, the space was used as a black-market dump! Luckily the city shut it down, and after two spring seasons of cleaning up back there, we're left with what you see! We're going to continue to pour our hearts, souls, creativity and probably more than just a little money into making "The Baying Hound Campground" a fun place to crash for a couple days while taking in all that is Asheville. We also have a list at the cabin of other places nearby that provide hot showers in the winter months for a small fee. In the rare event that heavy snow is expected, we will have to close the road leading up to the cabin because of its steepness. If this occurs, you will be given a full refund for the cancellation. To heat the cabin, there is a un-vented wall mounted heater that heats the space really well! Since the cabin is insulated, the heater works quick to heat the small area up so you will stay nice and cozy!

The views are hypnotic, looking down and out over the continental divide. Good morning, and sunsets can be seen from the same spot. Your car is parked within feet of your deck, so Car Campers and experienced campers can enjoy. Designed with campers and dogs in mind. The deck is large (384 square feet) with a tin roof. Some roofs are full size, some are two-thirds, and some are one-third, depending on what one wants for tent size or sun exposure. (See pictures of each site/deck) Each deck features sun and rain curtains to help keep you comfortable in normal weather conditions. Dogs enjoy a two-gate system, allowing guests and dogs be leash-free and away from the road. All dog owners know to pick up after their pets. The human Private Porta John is cleaned on a weekly basis. Lights and electrical outlets are 110V (3 prongs) for YOUR coffee pots, electric grills, mattress inflators, crockpots, electric blankets, fans, et I do not provide any electrical appliances, other than counter area lighting and low-level string lights, so one can see the night sky Many of my campers will "Pay it Forward" and leave coffee pots, hot plates, fans and such, so count yourself lucky to find a deck with them. I provide chairs, 5 gallons of fresh water in containers, a fickle solar shower, and a pop-up changing room, along with an assortment of camping supplies from dog bowls to antimicrobial. This immaculate small cabin near Asheville is ready to treat you to a luxurious retreat experience. We are located only 15 minutes from Asheville and a few miles from the parkway, surrounded by 14 acres of forest. There is a private hot tub that is all yours! Sauna available upon request. Professional massage therapist onsite as well. The house is hand crafted with unique creative touches for your delight. We look forward to having you! This home was built in 2019 by an expert craftsman with the vision of making it cozy and spacious with sweet artistic details and lots of care and love. The home is 300 sq feet but feels much more grand inside. You will be nestled on 14 pristine acres of forest, with two decks, your own personal private hot tub, and a spring fed creek not too far down the driveway. There is a gas fireplace outdoors on the porch, and an outdoor fire pit for your use as well. The house has a queen size bed in the upper loft, a large twin day bed on the first level, and an extra loft with camping mats if needed above the day bed. The house can comfortably sleep 3 and up to 4 or 5 especially if a couple of them are children or petite people. The house has a full kitchen and bathroom, living room area and two lofts. For now there is a composting toilet that is easy to maintain and we are happy to help you with it if you’re on the land for more than a few days. The main house is about 30 yards up the hill, and although somewhat close, you will have plenty of privacy. We are close if you need us, but we try to give all of our guests ultimate privacy. The house is under a huge magnolia tree, so it stays shaded in the summer and quite cool. There is an AC unit and heaters in the house as well. There is a personal hot tub, which is screened in, and located on the front deck of the house now. You will love it! There is a back deck that is only for meditation, yoga, and bird watching, and we ask that folks stay silent on the back deck if they use it. Pets are welcome at an extra charge of $40 a night. If anything is needed down at the house we are available. Much of the time there is a massage therapist on site, so if you are interested in getting Bodywork please just inquire about prices and availability. There is also a wood-fired sauna on the property, so if you would like to sauna please let us know. And an added bonus is that you are only 5 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and LOTS of great hiking, great restaurants, bars, coffee shops, art galleries and more. Asheville is 15 minutes from the tiny cabin and Weaverville is 10 minutes away. On any given day you might see a family a deer, turkeys or bears in the front yard. There is a spring fed creek on the edge of the property you are welcome to soak your feet in, and there is incredible hiking just a few miles away. You are welcome to explore the 13 acres of property as well that the home is located on. This is not a place for parties. Our neighbors are about 200 yards down the hill so we try to respect their privacy and keep it quiet. That is why we have made the back deck a retreat/silent deck. Maximum of 4 guests.

Our parents stayed at the cabin over a fall weekend in late October and it was perfect! We had a campfire, an outing to Asheville and a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and spent a rainy day cozied up in the cabin playing card games and chatting. You are immersed in the trees at the cabin and they have done such a wonderful job of making every part feel well thought out and cared for. The toilet and shower felt cozy, even outside! Deserae responded to all my messages promptly and communicated well! Our parents, visiting from Ireland, said it was one of our best vacation spots and they had such a refreshing time.

Stayed in Cabin 2 for a night, the hike up was definitely worth it! I would definitely recommend packing light and bringing a sleeping bag and good headlight/flashlight. Doug, the caretaker was soo welcoming and accommodating. For anyone following the coordinates that are sent to you with the directions I would just follow the Google directions under the name of the cabins. The coordinates took me to a private driveway in Google maps. Definitely recommend this place for a nice unplugged time.

Nice secluded tent campsite on an angora bunny farm. Listen to the sound of the mountain creek while you sleep, and cuddle with bunnies by the running water wheel during the day. Very relaxing spot to decompress and unplug on 7 acres that are mostly wooded. Pisgah National Forest is just two miles away with plenty of hiking to explore. The charming town of Burnsville is just 10 miles on a beautiful, scenic highway. Homeplace Brewery, Birdfoot Taproom, and Snapdragon are among the local spots to visit. Asheville is also nearby at just under an hour’s drive. The trail entrance to Big Butt is a couple miles away with a few great overlook points. If you want to do the whole 24 mile length of the trail (featuring 5 mountain peaks above 6,000ft), I can make shuttle arrangements for your party to be picked up at the end. Navitat Ziplining is very close, as well as gorgeous flower farms and Mountain Light Sanctuary to visit over in Barnardsville. Come enjoy our mountain community!

Personal code to the entrance gate will be given at check in. - Bath House: The restored bathhouse is split into boys’ and girls’ sides. Each side has 2 private showers, 4 flushing toilets, sinks, hot water, and gas heat. - Community Pavilion: The Pavilion is a large 40x30 ft. open sided structure overlooking the Nantahala River. It has an ample fireplace, running water sink, counter space, couches, and table with benches. - Pack Room: Where the adventure begins! A cozy hub where all guests get local information, view maps, and grab some local seasonal groceries. When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling. Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood. You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7. Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more. Whether it’s the absence of electricity (in the cabin), the quiet of the country, no city glow in the night sky, or the once common experience of the natural world dominating over human-made or human-crafted things, it’s astonishing for many of us to see and feel and experience without constant communications via text and email and the distractions of modern life. A long history of camping and working in the outdoor recreation industry inspired a design to intentionally interact with nature. By utilizing rain collection, solar power generation, composting toiletries, outdoor cooking, each treehouse is completely off-grid. Rest from your adventures on the comfy, queen and full-sized beds. A spacious queen bottom bunk and lofted double mattress can accommodate four adult campers. All bed linens and pillows are provided. The treehouses offer private, indoor bathing and toilet facilities. Every treehouse is equipped with a propane-heated, rain-collection shower and maintenance-free, vented composting toilet. The kitchenette boasts wide concrete countertop table dining with four stools, two-burner propane cooktop, potable water and drain sink, and separate propane grill. Provided cookware includes pots, pans, cooking/grill tools and utensils, cutting board and knife. There are complete place settings for 4 glampers, plus coffee percolator and mugs (bring ground coffee.) There is no refrigerator, bring your own cooler and ice. Unique, spectacular views of nature are seen from each treehouse. Snowbird Mountain to North, Mt Sterling to East, Chestnut Mountain to West and Mt Cammerer to South. That’s why I created the Waldhaus resort.During the past years, the Sawmill has become my favorite place to spend quality time in what I call "Cabin Living" which I love so much. Nearly every day there is a small challenge, nothing comes easy, but all the coziness and comfort is there.  The water is supplied by a spring above the mill. Electricity is generated by solar technology and a generator. All refrigeration and cooking appliances are propane; and so is the basic heat (propane again) - and a very old Jotul wood stove will do the rest. I sleep a lot on the day bed in the living room so the Sawmill can be comfortably rented for up to 4 guests. The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom.We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

Come enjoy this one of a kind peaceful, completely off grid glamping experience. ***Dome is completely off grid, runs completely off solar power. Guests can check how much power they have on the generator under the kitchen countertop by hitting the display button. Electric should be sufficient but glampers will do are responsible for using the electricity responsibly so as to not drain the battery completely. There is a microwave for cooking, a charcoal grill on the deck (charcoal and grill necessities included) and a fire ring for open flame cooking. There is a hammock provided for warmer days! Please note that when temperatures dip into the teens and the single digits make sure to bring warm clothing as dome can still get a bit chilly on those nights. Also note that there is a hand washing station outside of the dome next to the port a potty however when temperatures dip into the teens and single digits the water can freeze up in the hand washing station. We do also provide hand sanitizer as a back up. The outdoor shower is only open typically from April through October. In addition, the only form of heat is a wood burning stove with starters and wood provided, so it will be your responsibility to make sure that the stove keeps burning with wood as to keep the dome warm. This most likely will entail getting up at least once a night to stoke/put wood on the fire. On very hot summer days the dome can get very warm inside. We have a high powered fan and black out curtains to help but it still can get very warm. Best to utilize the outdoor space in the late morning/early afternoon hours or use this time to explore the area. THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING! Also, there may be some bugs that you see. Especially stink bugs in September and October. We do our best to keep bugs out, yet this is a Glamping experience which is between camping and a typical Airbnb experience so please plan/pack/expect accordingly. Thanks!
