Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. This is a quaint, off grid cabin located in Elliotsville, Me., surrounded by wilderness, next to the Appalachian Trail in the 100 Mile Wilderness. Propane lights, glass front woodstove, fully operational kitchen, propane cookstove, fire pit out front, BBQ grill on porch. Firewood and propane and plenty of water at sink provided. 2 8ft kayaks for your use to explore all the ponds and lakes nearby. You can spend days or weeks exploring the area, hiking, biking, canoeing, mountain climbing and swimming. Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Queen bed with bunk beds in 1st floor bedroom, full size and twin bed in upstairs bedroom. Clean linens provided. Open kitchen and living room. Seems like most people love it. Pretty sure you will too. So much to do in the area. Be as bored or as active as you want. Welcome book with directions to local spots all very close. Waterfalls, the most beautiful lake (Onawa), swimming holes... all close by. Appalachian trail out back. Other sites close by must be driven to but close by still, away from town. BUTTERFLY PARADISE HOMESTEAD Originally built in 1904 as the Qualey Homestead, w/an addition in 1949. It has a great view of Katahdin from Kitchen & Living Room, partial view from the Den, which has a view of Mount Chase & Sugar Loaf. There is a 180 deg. view of the mountain range from the apple orchard behind the house + the star watch point by the 100 year old graveyard.
There is a 12 herb medicinal garden, a 12+ wildflowers garden, + berries. The garden has amazing star watching and viewpoints with large granite stones and bistro tables for seating. Plenty of space for gazebos, pool, tiny houses, raised garden beds, etc. Lots of white quartz, red & black agate, slate. Lots of lichen, moss, pine cones, mushrooms. Lots of wildlife: eagles, hawks, turkey flock, deer herd, squirrels, chipmunks, and countless species of bird. Two 100+ year old and several other mature heirloom apple trees. There is a nearby creek leading to the 10,000 Acre Bog which is full of peat + pitcher plants. The house is fed by a well and there is not one but two seasonal springs in the garden, one supports a raspberry bog, and the other a very nice pond which a variety of toads and frogs and salamanders enjoy.
The home is 5 min. from the grocery, town office, post office, transfer station, & church in Sherman; 10 min. from the local junior high & high school; 25 min. from hardware, nursery, supermarket, & churches in Patten. Just 30 min. from Millinocket, 45 min. from Lincoln, & 1 hr. from Bangor. Express bus service to the airport from Circle K by the Katahdin Motor Lodge 2 min. from the house. There are nearby farms that sell produce and quilts.

Weekend Trip to 100 Mile Wilderness Cabin
This was our second visit to Paul's cabin and did not disappoint again. Paul made sure there was enough water and wood to last our stay. There is now a flushing toilet outside which was a nice treat. There are many fantastic walking trails close by including the Appalachian Trail. This time round we spent time at North Pond and Juniper Knee Pond and hiked 4ish hour to Little Wilson Falls (there and back and time at the falls).

Well appointed with all one needs for a multiday stay. If considering a stay during colder months, don't hesitate. The wood stove did the trick and there was more than enough wood. Most impressive was Paul's hosting, maintained contact throughout...very helpful. We will be back!

Easy to find! Lots of choices as to where you can park. If you stay up high the mountain views are spectacular or chose a spot near the picnic table and have total privacy. Trails are numerous. Really enjoyed chatting with Chris and swapping stories.

What a gem! 100% hope to be back! Peaceful, quiet, clean and fully stocked! Just bring your clothes and food. Paul provides everything else. Love the location; Monson is a quaint small town with charming people. The flush toilet was a bonus and the shower worked fantastic!

I had a big site. The water and electric was over by the bathrooms and if I had my RV it would have been a pain to get to but since i was in my camper van it was no problem. The campgrounds were really clean and well taken care of and so was the bathrooms. Campgrounds are really close to Baxter State Park

This campground was perfectly situated in the heart of God's country. It sits between Lake Ambejejus and Millinockett Lake. We found Ambejejus to be outstanding for swimming. The sites were very spacious and flat. AB was right next to the bathrooms/showers, which was also nice. There are also 3 restaurants within walking distance that offer a nice variety of cuisines, ranging from bar food/sandwiches to upscale entrees. We really had a great time at Big Moose!

We loved this area! Hiked Borestone Mountain, Mount Kineo, and took a dip in the nearby river. The shower was nice and easy to use.

Paul’s cabin is the best we stayed at all summer! The flush toilet and shower are genius and I wish all cabins had that. Paul was an awesome host- bringing us more water and firewood when we got low. The welcome book had great suggestions for things to do to keep our teenagers busy. We will definitely be back next year!

We loved staying at Paul’s camp, it was just like he described it, quiet and peaceful and perfect. We had our twin 2 year old granddaughters, our daughter and her husband and 3 dogs with us and we enjoyed camp fires, walks down the road, picking wild flowers and just being together unplugged. We went on some swimming adventures in the area that he had listed in a binder (thanks for that Paul!). It was a wonderful time. He has a slice of heaven there and we are grateful he is sharing it. He supplied everything, even a cooler on the porch and brought extra water and firewood. The flush toilets and shower were a big plus.

This place has it all! Beautiful cabin, bunk beds, main bed, upstairs loft, kitchen, sitting area, gorgeous porch, firepit, chairs, a flush toilet, even a shower! We’ve stayed in our fair share of hipcamp cabins but this cabin was perfect, plenty of room for us and our dog and 3 year old son and the host thought of everything. We sincerely didn’t even need to pack anything ourselves, had plenty of kitchen gear, drinkable water, camp equipment, bed linens, extra battery lamps, even ratchet straps for the kayaks he had available! Even provided a binder of local spots to check out and directions, which was especially helpful as GPS service was spotty. I highly recommend coming here and we are already looking for another time to come, especially knowing we don’t have to pack much more stuff ourselves. We had so much fun checking out the area and chatting with locals at a nearby pond. We had even accidentally left a steel water bottle and the owner reached out and offered to ship it back home to us! Having the trail behind the house was the best place to take the whole family for a day hike one day, and being that close to the AT was a gem. Book this place! Don’t think twice!

The cabin and surrounding land was better than even expected. The pictures don't do this property justice. A literal slice of heaven with every convenience available. Paul has made this off-grid cabin feel so comfortable and welcoming. I can't wait to book this place again.
