Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for.
The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life.
In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land.
Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests.
In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods.
Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special.

Get your "groove" on or hang loose here on a precious little island with a big bridge just off route one in the heart of Midcoast. Hundreds of guests report the perfect balance of upbeat fun and chill time and call our place and hospitality "magic", "amazing" and "holy guacamole!" It is a lovely spot just off the beaten path but close enough to access the frey. :)
I welcome my guests personally and have likely had a chat before you booked. I like to know what your hopes and priorities are around your stay before I accept so I can meet both of our needs. When you arrive, I will greet you and share a little history/tour of the place. I accept travelers between 4 and 9 pm but like all of us schedules fluctuate and we can roll some. There's a strong chance on an average Maine clear summer evening, I have the campfire going and the solar lights around the yard are charged for their evening gentle show.
All of the spaces I rent are bedrooms only. You walk a few steps/yards to my 5 bedroom home and access two showers and some kitchen use. I also have an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen that is cute and for your use. It's fun to cook on the fire too! I prefer folks to limit cooking esp in hot weather but support healthier eating and may share some of my foraging tips. The rooms are equipped with plenty of linens and fan power. You will be cozy either way the temps go.
There is a lovely porch on the log home where you can sit and enjoy the sunset and lots of wildlife activity. The back yard has tether ball and lots of seating as well as the good sized fire pit with ghosts of hundreds of fireside chats gone by. I look forward to ours!
Next door there is a gravel road on a lightly traveled road for your walking or biking pleasure. I am happy to join you in a hilly roller coaster cycling experience and have a few bikes to offer up. I am a WWOOF host and have occasional "helpers" and you are welcome to explore my veggie and flower gardens.
This host loves board games and crafts so is often ready to share either or both with guests. There are 150 acres around me that are wooded and pathed so your pup will love it too. Reach out soon and let's chat about your vacation and visit here. I look forward to hearing from you.

Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Queen bed with bunk beds in 1st floor bedroom, full size and twin bed in upstairs bedroom. Clean linens provided. Open kitchen and living room. Seems like most people love it. Pretty sure you will too. So much to do in the area. Be as bored or as active as you want. Welcome book with directions to local spots all very close. Waterfalls, the most beautiful lake (Onawa), swimming holes... all close by. Appalachian trail out back. Other sites close by must be driven to but close by still, away from town. We have been hipcamping for 2 years now and have met some really wonderful hosts along the way, but we want to give a special shout out to Stephen! He has been the most welcoming host since we reached out with questions prior to reserving the site. He is quick to respond and very informative. We received detailed directions to find the campsite and Stephen was there to greet us when we arrived, making sure we didn't have any questions as we settled in for a few days.
The campsite is just outside of town and tucked away from the main road so there is little traffic noise, if any at all. The site is a level gravel pad on the side of the garage. Stephen offers full hookups for electric, potable hot/cold water, and an RV dump site if needed. He is also the first host we have stayed with who has laundry as an amenity! The washer and dryer are located in the garage with easy access. Another pleasant bonus is the available wifi. We work remotely so wifi with a strong signal is always another welcome amenity for us when traveling. The side and back yard next to the campsite are nicely landscaped and offer privacy with a nice view of the surrounding woods. The site has a picnic table, a firepit with plenty of firewood provided by the host, and was large enough for us to back our van in and park our car.
We can't speak highly enough of Stephen and his campsite. We were fortunate to have stayed during the beginning of blueberry season and would be glad to stay again in the future!

We had such a wonderful stay with Bill and Lisa! My husband and I are traveling the East Coast all the way from West Virginia, and they made us feel incredibly welcome from the moment we arrived. They went above and beyond by offering help whenever we needed it, sharing great local recommendations, and even offering horse riding lessons!
Their property was exactly what we were hoping for. The campsite was flat and easy to set up on, there was a nice fire pit to enjoy in the evenings, and they generously let us use the camper restroom, which was greatly appreciated. The area was peaceful and quiet at night, the temperatures stayed nice and cool, and the stargazing was absolutely incredible.
If you’re looking for hosts who truly care about their guests and provide a relaxing, enjoyable camping experience, we can’t recommend Bill and Lisa enough. Thank you both for your hospitality and for making our East Coast adventure even more memorable. We would absolutely stay here again!

Beautiful setting to relax for a few nights. The sound of birds and frogs to lull you to sleep. Sites were large, clean with perks like a screened in dining area if you prefer. River access was easy for wading and bird watching. We got lucky to see a bald eagle! Becky did us a huge favor and we appreciate the help with firewood. She was proactive when the water was shut down due to storms and made sure we were not without for long.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, welcoming place to stay near Freeport, this is it! This was an absolutely phenomenal Hipcamp experience from start to finish.
Stephen is an outstanding host—friendly, gracious, and incredibly thoughtful. Before I arrived, he sent videos showing exactly where to find the driveway and where to park, which made getting settled completely stress-free. The site had full hookups, everything worked perfectly, and he checked in each day to make sure I had everything I needed. As someone who enjoys meeting people, I truly appreciated his kindness and hospitality.
I happened to be visiting during an incredibly intense heat dome, with temperatures reaching nearly 100°F. I work remotely from my camper, and despite running the air conditioner, it simply couldn’t keep up with the extreme heat. Stephen immediately offered the use of his cool, comfortable garage, where my dogs and I were able to escape the heat while I continued my work meetings in complete comfort. That level of generosity and genuine concern for his guests is something you rarely find.
Traveling with multiple dogs can sometimes be challenging, but Stephen was exceptionally accommodating and made all of us feel welcome. It is obvious that he truly cares about the people who stay on his property and wants them to have the best

Wow, what an absolute gem of a spot. We had such a wonderful time camping in the pasture view tent. I was with my two year-old twins. They had a marvellous time. Sandi is such a generous and thoughtful host. She showed the kids all of the wonderful animals, took them for a ride on the golf cart and showed them how to collect eggs from the chicken coop. The camp setup is perfect, very easy and low stress. 10 minutes from a really great swim spot. A perfect vacation.

It’s a ways out there! Coming from the NH Lakes Region, it was about a 5 hour drive, but totally worth it. The natural beauty of the rugged coast, the rural environment, and to land upon a campground with the just-right mix of nature and amenities! We stayed in the yurt for 3 nights and enjoyed campfire meals and evening card games with our teenagers! They were stoked to be able to enjoy hot showers, plug in and connect with friends and perfect their s’more creation skills. I definitely recommend the stay for a painless disconnect from the day to day.

This camp was great. We enjoyed the access to the AT and walked on it both days we were there. The camp had everything we needed in terms of bedding. There was a great cast iron skillet that we used for most meals. The bathroom situation was great. Unusual to have a flush toilet. I would recommend this camp.

Nice site, quiet and clean. Affordable compared to other campgrounds in the area and was set up nicely with a fire ring and table. There was also wood left in the fire ring which was also thoughtful.

Weekend Trip to Island View At Kiwanis Beach
What a special place! We loved being so close to the water, the shaded site, and the privacy. Even though there were other campers close by we still felt like we had the place to ourselves.
The site has everything you need for a great camping trip.
Guests should know that even though they will be camping in a durable tent and sleeping in a bed; the tent is setup on a slatted platform that is open on the bottom. So if you are particularly sensitive to mosquitoes or other insects you may want to bring along a mosquito net to hang over the bed. We did just that and were quite happy.
We would definitely stay here again!

This cabin was just what I was looking for! Peaceful and quiet yet with every comfort you could imagine for an off-grid cabin. I have backpacked the Appalachian Trail including the 100-Mile Wilderness. It was great to be able to hike there from the cabin without carrying a full backpack, and to return to a bed, a kitchen with a stove, a flush toilet, and a shower. Paul was a great host with a quick response time for any questions.

Four Acre Woods is a thoughtfully designed Hipcamp with sweet camping spots that give some privacy (some sites have lots of privacy), great fire pits for hanging out, and access to clean bathrooms and a community center. We have stayed at a great many Hipcamp locations and this one ranks among our favorites. Highly recommend camping here.
