Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for.
The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life.
In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land.
Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests.
In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods.
Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Welcome to my studio property. There is a long spacious spot for most sizes RV. It has level grass for you to park on. There is a group fire pit area on the grounds for everyone.
Many people do not need electricity these days. So I have lowered the price of the spot. It is without electricity. You can add it on if you wish at $20 per night. You will need a long extension, and it is 20 amps. please request electric prior to visit.
I have water for your holding tank. it is clean from my well and brought to you via garden hose.

The sounds of the night are magical here. The Biker’s Bunkhouse is ideal for motorcycle travelers as it shelters both the guest and the Bike/s. If you are interested in a spontaneous camping adventure, if your luggage got lost or if you just don’t want to deal with transporting camping gear we have a variety of rental equipment. Arbor Camp is a collection of thoughtfully designed cabins and treehouses set on 30 private acres in the Maine woods offering a secluded forest retreat on the Union River—private and peaceful, yet just minutes from the shops, restaurants, and year-round charm of downtown Ellsworth. Located 30 minutes north of Acadia National Park, it’s an ideal base for exploring the mountains, woods, lakes, and rugged shoreline that define Downeast Maine.
With nearly half a mile of river frontage, a stream, and over a mile of hand-cut walking trails, Arbor Camp’s thirty acres provide ample space to unwind without leaving the grounds. Two cabins and a treehouse sit in an open field with wide views of the river and its passing wildlife. The remaining treehouses are thoughtfully spaced across 25 acres of quiet forest, offering privacy and a sense of deep immersion in the trees. Many enjoy filtered river views through the canopy.
Each season brings its own pleasures: temperate summer days and cool, starlit evenings; fall foliage and crisp air; the stillness of snow-covered woods in winter; and, in spring, a quiet reawakening as color and life return to the forest.
Arbor Camp began in 2022, when three friends came together to build a quiet place in the woods. Thirty acres along the Union River in Ellsworth offered the space—and the inspiration—for something lasting. The project was shaped by Maine’s camp tradition: simple, seasonal dwellings that invite stillness, comfort, and connection to the land.
We followed the path of an old roadbed to guide our layout, preserving as many trees as possible. Cabins and treehouses are spaced for privacy and quiet, and walking trails were cut by hand to follow the natural shape of the land.
Wildlife is part of daily life here. Songbirds call from the canopy. Heron and eagles pass overhead. Deer move through the understory, and turkeys wander the clearings. Mushrooms—chanterelles, black trumpets, and others—rise through the forest floor in season.
From the start, the idea was simple: to create a place that feels good to step into. Each of us brought different experiences—design, building, creative work—but shared a clear vision: spaces that are well made, deeply comfortable, and in tune with their surroundings.

Each cabin has two twin beds and includes two Adirondack chairs, a firepit, a small indoor table with two chairs, two LED-powered lanterns, one fan, 5 gallons of potable water, a simple outdoor kitchen table, a picnic table, and access to a propane on-demand shower house. The bathroom facilities include a shared port-o-potty or a compostable toilet—both options are available. These cabins are off the grid, with no power or water inside.

Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for.
The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life.
In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land.
Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests.
In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods.
Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special.

Welcome to my studio property. There is a long spacious spot for most sizes RV. It has level grass for you to park on. There is a group fire pit area on the grounds for everyone.
Many people do not need electricity these days. So I have lowered the price of the spot. It is without electricity. You can add it on if you wish at $20 per night. You will need a long extension, and it is 20 amps. please request electric prior to visit.
I have water for your holding tank. it is clean from my well and brought to you via garden hose.

The sounds of the night are magical here. The Biker’s Bunkhouse is ideal for motorcycle travelers as it shelters both the guest and the Bike/s. With each listing be sure to READ all the information and the rules. If you are interested in a spontaneous camping adventure, if your luggage got lost or if you just don’t want to deal with transporting camping gear we have a variety of rental equipment. Last minute reservation requests may not work via the reservation site but we may very likely have a space. Unplug, recharge, and get away from all the hustle & bustle. We do have a TV for the occasional rainy-day movie, with 2 comfy recliners in the loft. The downstairs bedroom has black out shades and a closet to hang your clothes. The upstairs bedroom has dresser for your clothes, a skylight for stargazing as you drift off to sleep and eye masks if the moon is too bright or you want to sleep past sunrise.

Arbor Camp is a collection of thoughtfully designed cabins and treehouses set on 30 private acres in the Maine woods offering a secluded forest retreat on the Union River—private and peaceful, yet just minutes from the shops, restaurants, and year-round charm of downtown Ellsworth. Located 30 minutes north of Acadia National Park, it’s an ideal base for exploring the mountains, woods, lakes, and rugged shoreline that define Downeast Maine.
With nearly half a mile of river frontage, a stream, and over a mile of hand-cut walking trails, Arbor Camp’s thirty acres provide ample space to unwind without leaving the grounds. Two cabins and a treehouse sit in an open field with wide views of the river and its passing wildlife. The remaining treehouses are thoughtfully spaced across 25 acres of quiet forest, offering privacy and a sense of deep immersion in the trees. Many enjoy filtered river views through the canopy.
Each season brings its own pleasures: temperate summer days and cool, starlit evenings; fall foliage and crisp air; the stillness of snow-covered woods in winter; and, in spring, a quiet reawakening as color and life return to the forest.
Arbor Camp began in 2022, when three friends came together to build a quiet place in the woods. Thirty acres along the Union River in Ellsworth offered the space—and the inspiration—for something lasting. The project was shaped by Maine’s camp tradition: simple, seasonal dwellings that invite stillness, comfort, and connection to the land.
We followed the path of an old roadbed to guide our layout, preserving as many trees as possible. Cabins and treehouses are spaced for privacy and quiet, and walking trails were cut by hand to follow the natural shape of the land.
Wildlife is part of daily life here. Songbirds call from the canopy. Heron and eagles pass overhead. Deer move through the understory, and turkeys wander the clearings. Mushrooms—chanterelles, black trumpets, and others—rise through the forest floor in season.
From the start, the idea was simple: to create a place that feels good to step into. Each of us brought different experiences—design, building, creative work—but shared a clear vision: spaces that are well made, deeply comfortable, and in tune with their surroundings.

Each cabin has two twin beds and includes two Adirondack chairs, a firepit, a small indoor table with two chairs, two LED-powered lanterns, one fan, 5 gallons of potable water, a simple outdoor kitchen table, a picnic table, and access to a propane on-demand shower house. The bathroom facilities include a shared port-o-potty or a compostable toilet—both options are available. These cabins are off the grid, with no power or water inside.
We have a clean port-o-potty, serviced once a week, shared between the second cabin and one tent site. Potable water is provided in large jugs on the outdoor kitchen table. 3 nights at Camping With Wolves, Acadia Area
This was my second stay at the Biker’s Bunkhouse, and it was just as awesome as the first. I spent three nights in the cozy barn tucked close to the wolves, and it was incredible drifting off to the sound of their howls at night. The bathroom and shower (with real hot water) felt luxurious. The kitchen looked great, though we were so busy trekking in Acadia that we didn't really use it; we opted for local diners and brunch spots. It is very easy to find, no matter how late or dark it is, because it is really just off Route 1. The tent and surrounding areas were super clean, and you just needed to sit and enjoy the beautiful water view.

My son (age 12) and I have been to Four Acre Woods for the last 2 years and really enjoyed it. The first year we tent camped and this year we stayed in the yurt. The campground is very small, which we like and each site is unique. Lots of amenities for such a small campground, they really think of the little things that keeps camping comfortable. The yurt was wonderful and the campsite has everything you need (we brought too much stuff). Just bring yourself, clothes, and food and you are good to go. We are fairly local, so it is a great weekend getaway, but we don't really explore the area when camping. If you want to experience the downeast Maine coast away from the more touristy spots, this is where you want to go.

Heather’s land was beautiful. We had a great time. The atmosphere was perfect, close to everything, yet far enough to not feel like you’re in town. The accommodations were great, hospitality was exceptional, everyone was very personable and it was a fun experience! HIGHLY recommended place to visit!

We loved staying in the yurt! It was perfectly private, adorable, and we were surprised by the incredibly comfortable beds. This was the perfect size for our family of 5. The community room was warm (literally had a wood stove going at 6am!), stocked with coffee and hot chocolate, and hosts and the space alike were welcoming and helpful.

We really enjoyed our stay in one of the domes at Four Acre Wood. The tent was comfortable, and the campground had everything we needed. Conary Cove is a must-visit and we were pleasantly surprised by the selection at the local Hannaford in Blue Hill. We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to friends.

We had a great two night stay at Four Acre Woods Campground. We stayed in the yurt, which we found cozy and perfect for our needs. The site itself was well appointed with two hammocks, a cute fire pit and plenty of seating around the campfire area. Our group loved the little community center for coffee in the morning, it was easy to purchase dry wood to burn (across from site) and we all felt like the bathrooms were clean and a short walk away.

Lots to do all within 20 minutes of your campsite. Lots of great restaurant choices too. Our favorite was the Burnt Cove Lobster Boil…highly recommend!

Heather was great and being surrounded by the animals was so cool! We stayed in the bikers bunkhouse for a few nights and it was nice. There was a clean portapotty, outdoor shower (not fully enclosed, bring bathing suits), and electricity in the cabin. We met several staff members and everyone was super nice, we did one of the tours as well and that was neat. We would recommend to those traveling in the area.

I appreciate 4 acre's gracious atmosphere ; the hosts are both responsive and unintrusive. The Seal Cove geodome is both stylish and comfortable ; thoughtful details like the pour over coffee cone and stoneware dishes are a treat! The area's natural beauty is easily accessible from the campground, all in all a perfect spot!

1 night at Ferncrest Acadia
Ferncrest Acadia is so special! It’s a brand new place, and they’ve absolutely nailed it. The location is perfect!! Peaceful, surrounded by nature, and still super close to Acadia and all the little towns and hikes nearby.
The geodome was insanely cozy and felt so luxurious! Like the perfect mix of comfort and nature. We slept like babies and never wanted to leave!
And the stargazing? Out of this world. We laid outside for hours just watching the sky—I've never seen stars like that before. It felt totally magical.
You can even pick fresh blueberries right on the property, which was such a fun bonus. Every little detail was so thoughtful, and everything just felt easy.
We already can’t wait to come back. If you’re headed to Maine, Ferncrest Acadia needs to be on your list!!

We had a wonderful experience at the Biker Bunkhouse. We were spoiled with our own private piece of the property behind two locked gates. The comfortable bed was lovely after a long day of exploring Acadia and Bar Harbor. Heather was so accommodating with all my extra last minute requests, I couldn't thank her enough for making our travel stress-free. We loved seeing all the animals on the farm. We were encouraged to feed the baby goats and observe the other animals from a safe distance. What a cool experience to see wolves and hear them howl at night. This place is cool for tours and campers!

This place was exactly what we were looking for! It was a step up from camping, as the bunkhouse provided protection from the bugs, heat, and even had electricity to charge our phones. However, it was still rugged enough to feel like we were camping. The campsite even had a fire pit and they had wood for sale on the property. The hosts were very friendly and willing to talk to you about the animals. The place was very secure from both the animals and other people. The porta potty was very clean. The cabin room was actually nicer than the hotel we had stayed at the night before. The location was very nicely located between the park, bar harbor and town accommodations like gas or Walmart (in case you need to get food to cook). We would stay here again, and it was a great way to beat the crowds. Thank you for having us!!

This is a delightful campground in the woods, but not far from a cove I believe (although we couldn't find it). Its obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the facilities which are very clean and comfortable. No charges either for using the washing machines, and soap and shampoo and conditioner provided in the bathouse. The common area is very sweet with books, guitars, games and all sorts of info on the local area. We loved the geodome which was very comfortable and had everything we might need. We had one night which was colder than expected but they supplied us with a space heater which helped.
