Devil’s Hopyard got its name from a couple of different stories, although it does sounds like a great name for a delicious india pale ale. The Hopyard part is in fact believed to have origins tracing back to a farmer who grew hops for brewing near Chapman Falls, the main attraction of this area. The Devil part likely comes from early settlers who tried to explain away the unique potholes in the stone around the waterfall with the supernatural.These potholes are actually perfectly explainable by science, go figure. As stones moved down stream, some would occasionally get trapped in an eddy, causing them to swirl around and erode the rock. The devil story is much more interesting though, which claims that the devil accidentally got his tail wet one day and was so angry, he burned holes in the stones with his hooves. Guess you'll have to go see it for yourself and make up your own mind on what truly happened. While you're there, make sure to check out the awesome hiking, fishing and mountain biking in the area. Devil's Hopyard State Park is just as full of outdoor activities as it is with history.

In 1686, Captain Samuel Ruggles and seven men purchased this land from the Nipmuck people for twenty British pounds. Anne and Brett's site is the perfect spot to be off the beaten path but still close enough to the main drag. There were two of us and our two labs, they loved the giant field! We grabbed breakfast sandwiches at Mimis down the road before exploring the beautiful and quiet Quabbin Reservoir. We had full cell service too(Verizon.) Their camp offers solitude(except for a surprise visit from their beautiful pups!) you look for in a camp, all you can hear is bird song and the occasional horse whinny. Down the road is a bakery, pizza house, package store and Cumberland Farms. The owners were very quick to respond to our messages and said to let them know if there was anything we needed. The site itself is very clean with fire ring, firewood, picnic table and a very spacious. Book it today, you won't regret it, we will be back!

I met some friends at Quabbin for a hike and chose here to camp for the night. Misty met me at the gate and escorted me to the site and told me a little history of this great piece of land. I had a great night here with an abundance of peace and quiet. Hope to get back here soon!

Great camping spot with a lot of flat space for tents. We fit three tents and two pop-ups in the area! Firewood was abundant and the fire pit was maintained and plenty big. In the summer months I think this spot would allow for even more privacy. Since we camped in the spring, there wasn’t a lot of foliage to block the road or the tiny home across the way from the camp site. There was a lot of traffic for a dirt road (10-12 vehicles went by each day of our stay) that was about 100 yards away. Unfortunately a neighbor had a dog that barked for long periods of time. None of which is in the owner’s control of course, bur helpful for knowing what to expect.

What a wonderful little spot! Tucked away above a field you have an amazing view with the mountains and a space all to yourself. It’s quiet and secluded for those looking for some calm or privacy. The land hosts are great communicators and really offer something special here. The site is simple, spacious and clean. Definitely don’t overlook this site, I’ll surely be coming back!

This is my first experience at a Hipcamp, and it was top-notch. I had a large, open, quiet, and extremely private area all to myself. There was a nice picnic table, and the host kindly had a pile of kindling set aside for me. There were hawks and falcons in the sky. Highly recommend.
