The Ranch has many varied sites to explore from oak woodlands to pine covered woods.
The ownership of the land has been held since 1883 by the Summit Lime Company and was until the 1930's the site of several lime quarries one of which was used to supply material for the Owens valley to Los Angeles aquaduct.
Current utilization is for recreation, private hunting club, timber production, and cattle grazing.
The campground was built in 1967 to provide a location for church, non-profit, and youth groups to enjoy a private, and safe location for outdoor recreation activities.
Camping is restricted to family and group activities. The campground has 17 sites a comfort station, water hook-ups, fire ring, and 4X8 foot stone BAR-B-Que.
In order to provide a private experience no two groups are scheduled at the same time.

We are the largest Arabian horse rescue in the United States. We are on 100 acres, but are currently using only 10 fenced acres for our horses. We have an average of 75 horses on our property. Most live in larger areas or paddocks in group "herds".
We focus on rehabilitation and training with the goal of finding permanent homes for our horses. However, we have about 30+ horses who are "sanctuary horses", either because they are older, or were traumatized, or have health issues, thus will not be rideable. The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest.

Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy).
Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal.
There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp.
This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**
Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal.
There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp.
This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**
Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. Peace, silence, tranquility. We have a small Class A R so we are use to certain..... luxuries. For true campers this is the place for you. Beautiful. Great staff. Great site prices. Well water for most if not all sites, which for something this remote is fantastic. I enjoyed it much I booked a weekend in about a month. Lots of walking/running space. Fascinating terrain and geography. The thing that breaks a silence that I really fell in love with was the Ballinger Canyon/ Cuyama Valley wind howl or roar. It's very cool. That, with the sounds of a campfire crackling and a coyote's den howling in the distance, there's a magic to it. I highly recommend it.

Lovely stay! I really enjoyed learning more about the ostriches during the tour. Lou was very informative. I also went home with some of the ostrich oil heat cream. It’s listed in the breakdown as $20 but I was charged $25.. just something to be mindful of. But all in all loved the experience and would stay again!

I had a very relaxing stay at Songdog Ranch. The sunsets and the night sky are absolutely beautiful—it’s the perfect place to sit back and take in the views.
The hosts are awesome and made the experience even better. At night, the barking of the coyotes was like music across the canyons, which made the stay feel rugged and authentic.
My dogs loved the freedom of running around and exploring the landscape. It was a great, peaceful getaway and we highly recommend it!

We had a lovely time here and would definetely come back in the future! The hosts were very nice, quick to reply, and took the time to show us around different camping spots to pick from. The property and surrounding area is beautiful and there's a lot of interesting places to explore. The creek isn't hard to cross with any regular car which isn't too close to the ground. The animals were great too, they got some beautiful highland cows and horses which came up to us to say hello. There's a lot of bones around the property if bone collecting is your thing. They also got three shepard/guard dogs which are very friendly. We were the only campers there when we went so having them around at night really put our minds at ease. As others have said you lose signal relatively soon after you exit the highway and take Caliente, so plan accordingly

Everything we needed was there and the bathroom was freshly cleaned for us. The shooting range onsite was great and having the BLM Land right against the property line was awesome. Highly recommend.

As inexperienced campers, I’m not sure what we were expecting, but this place was pretty great! Their 3 big, fluffy dogs hung out with us the entire time, which was a dream come true for me and my dog. She loved being off leash, romping with the dogs, and running through the stream (best days EVER). Their horses came near our site on the last day and it was so nice watching them peacefully grazing and drinking from the stream. As I mentioned, we’re pretty inexperienced campers and had to leave early due to the cold. Just know whatever the weather apps say, it probably be a bit cooler since it’s nestled between rocky hills. We definitely want to return when it’s warmer or come back better prepared.

SongDog is always beautiful. And the coyotes put up choruses all night long. The only drawback was the nine rowdy guys at the adjacent campsite whose extremely loud interactions continued until 1:30 am and often drowned out the songdogs.

While it was a little tricky to find in the dark for our first visit, my dogs and I really enjoyed our stay at Frank’s site! The space is just beautiful, plenty of room between campsites and there are quite a few dirt roads to walk on the property which we really enjoyed. We have a self contained camper van so we’re very comfortable despite the cold nighttime temperatures in January - definitely plan for this if you come in the winter!!
We met the host who was super gracious helping with giving directions to the site. There is potable water at the site which is great for refilling on the way to the desert, and the outhouse is cute and clean - so pleasant to have as an amenity! We will be back - this is a great nature filled spot to stop on the way to LA from the north for road trippers.

John was very patient as I was a Hipcamp newbie. I was also coming in last minute on a cold and chilly January night. He gave excellent directions and in the morning I was treated to a beautiful crisp Sierra morning. Location was private and beautiful, but the sound of all winter creek rushing close by. I had the place to myself, but there was plenty of room between locations. I would gladly go back and hope to a in warmer weather. :)
