Completely removed from civilization and surrounded by a barren nature that is alive with the subtle presence of the universe. Seasonally, Spring wildflowers burst across the landscape. This is our home but we love to share our life in the outback. We believe it will give you a better appreciation of life's simpler side. That being said, and to maintain the balance here at home, we'd appreciate if you keep your dogs in your car until you get to your site.
Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**
Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. Upon booking, you can look forward to an information packed email to help you make the very best of your trip!

Please pack your trash out there is a dumpster at the front gate entrance/exit for your trash.
Please close your umbrella when your not at the site, especially when it's windy. We have lost far to many very expensive solar light umbrellas due to the wind when it picks up.
Please support our farm by buying eggs, hats, stickers, and other items, all for sale in the barn.

There is plenty of clean, non potable drinking water, custom built toilets and optional hot showers, limited electrical use, cell phone charging and low power use devices as I am off grid. There is a fitness and nature trail on the property and Pacific Crest trail is approx 20 to 30 min drive, Mountain park which has many miles of hiking trails and an Indian reservation with hikes to many petroglphs. Things to see are the World famous Tehachapi railway loop, historic downtown, vineyards, mountain spirit center a Buddhist temple, glider rides, bicycle riding and fishing.

Villa Macala is 15 minutes from Diamond Valley Lake where you can enjoy a wildflower trail, fishing or mountain bike trails, museum and water park. It is 20-30 minutes to Pachea Trail and Simpson Park where you can enjoy more great hiking and mountain bike trails. It is also a 30-minute drive to Temecula Wine Country.
We have 2 full outdoor bathrooms, one was most recently added at our Elderberry Camp Site (site 1), and is also close to site 4 our Oaks Campsite as well. (Please note our 2nd bathroom is a good walk uphill from the campsites). Our larger bathroom campers can use with a shower and small fridge to store your food.
We also have a playground with swing set for kids to enjoy.
PLEASE NOTE: Bookings must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
FIRES: No fires are to be lit by the campers without verbal consent from property owner and instruction. SEE property owner/camp host upon arrival about what you may use on the property. He will provide instructions.
TASTINGS: Macala Orchards Olive Oil, Various Jellies and Jams Pomegranate Juice all made from what we grow are available for tasting upon request. Please let us know prior to arrival if you are interested in a scheduled tasting during your stay! We can provide a tasting if we have the proper staff during your visit. Our products are available for purchase, with or without a tasting. We recommend you bring cash if you are interested. We also take Venmo!
GETTING TO VILLA MACALA: The road up to Villa Macala is a dirt road uphill, all vehicles fair well, we attempt to keep the road maintained as well as possible, after heavy rains it is a bit more bumpy but safe. Drive slow!

covered in chaparral and manzanita shrubbery, and seasonal waterfalls, streams, a lake with a dam, dirt roads, and hiking trails. The property is a transitional area where agave, juniper and scrub oak thrive. Wildlife in the area includes: Quail, Rattle Snakes, Lizards, Ravens, Roadrunners, Tarantulas, Rosy Boa, Mule Deer, Pack Rats, Bob Cats, Coyotes and at times Bighorn Sheep are spotted by Table Mountain. I have 10 chickens, 2 cats and my dog Bosco.

The Guest Cabin is your perfect escape from urban confusion and the stress of social distancing, with all amenities for a perfect getaway! We use CDC safe guidelines for cleaning your private shower, kitchenette, and bathroom, as well as a queen bed with fresh sheets under star gazers' skylights, and WiFi so you can work! Only 22 miles from downtown Los Angeles, it feels like 100 miles from civilization. 15 minutes' drive to the beach, 30 minutes to Santa Monica. We have over 70 live oaks on the property to filter the perfect air. So far from the roar of civilization, you will think you are in another world!
You will have your cabin and ample, beautiful outdoor space all to yourselves with access to hiking trails and fire roads through a private gate. You will have parking for one car directly in front of the cabin with paid parking for a second car, as we have very limited parking!
We have a wonderful variety of wildlife that lives on our property, but the presence of Coyotes and Mountain lions in the area requires me to caution bringing your own pets, as we cannot guarantee their safety! We have Bobcats and a resident Gray Fox family with daily sightings in our meadow, rumored to once be the oldest vineyard in Topanga. Owls grace the night with their call, and Red Tail Hawks ply the morning sky, but silence is our calling card considering the chaos just over the hill!

This was one of the nicest sites that we have discovered on Hip-Camp. The owner is very welcoming and informative. The shower and bathrooms were clean and the site sitting on top of a mountain was wonderful.

This was a beautiful campsite, each one had plenty of room and while we were able to walk over to ask for a lighter, everyone kept to themselves.
Jen, the camp host, met us when we started driving the wrong way and was so helpful in getting us to the right spot with great directions.
You don't need a 4-wheel drive, but some of the driving trails on the mesa are quite deep and have potential of hurting lower floor cars.
The view was lovely, sunset perfect, and the camp host provided two camp chairs, a camp table, a fire ring with cover. The water spigot was also extremely helpful.

10/10 camping experience here at Kings Ranch with our 2.5 year old and almost 5 year old! Carlotta our host did an excellent job providing us with all the information needed to be acquainted with our campground. She led us down to the campsite and provided us with a map and overview of rules. We were lucky to be the only campers the entire weekend, but even if there were other campers it would still be secluded since the camps are pretty separated. Great hikes to do, nothing too strenuous. Carlotta provided 2 jugs of well water to drink which was great. She has 2 dogs who checked up on us during the stay but never stayed long or was a bother (and actually was quite comforting!) Never saw any scary wildlife. There were a bunch of fire ants that came out during the day but went back underground at night, but didn’t get on our things at all and didn’t interfere with our stay. We stayed at meadow and there’s 2 large swings that my daughters loved. We felt completely safe and would come back again. There’s a trading post a few miles out that we went to on Day 2 to pick up more firewood. Driving down to the campsite from the main road was completely unpaved down a mountain and took 15-20 minutes so make sure your driver is capable and not scared! Great stargazing. No Wifi so great for disconnecting from technology and the world! Be ready to be awakened by the array of bird callings at 6:30am!

Good access to the aqueduct for fishing plenty of activity from the fish even saw a few carp swim by. Rv hook ups work as intended, host was very communicative with me even though I showed up 6 hours late. Good spot.

If you’re looking for an epic getaway with your moto adventure crew, Camp 4 West at Song Dog Ranch is hard to beat. Perched on a hill overlooking the beautiful Cuyama Valley, this spot delivers peaceful vibes, unreal views, and the kind of quiet that lets you truly disconnect.
Nights here are something else kick back by the campfire while soaking in the stars and moonlight. Huge shoutout to Jim & Jen for being such welcoming hosts. Definitely one of my favorite places to camp when you just want to get away from it all!

My friend and I wanted to sleep somewhere in nature while, not too far away, when I was in town and this spot was the best!
It was super helpful for us to already have the beds set up instead of bringing sleeping stuff since I was only in town for a little while—cut down on time and packing :)
When we arrived, Ron met us and shared info about the common areas and told us how to get to go to our site. We saw a couple other sites and all were comfortably spaced out. Once we were ready, we called him and he let us know how to fill the tub (super simple).
The site itself was great—plenty of shade, a table, and a campfire pit. I had a question about the common area pool and Ron was super quick to message back.
It was a full(ish?) moon and the sky was super pretty. When we walked to the bathroom at night, you could see mountains in the distance and I really loved the view.
When we walked back from the bathroom, we walked near the front gate and I got a little nervous thinking we were locked in (just a silly moment of being scared in a new place). Ron must have seen me on the ring cam and texted me right away saying it’s unlocked and we can leave any time. I felt a little embarrassed but grateful he was so nice and also good to know he’s got an eye on what’s going on.
My little pup and I would love to come back someday!

Beautiful, remote oasis. John was welcoming and helpful. We admired his craftsmanship. We parked in #1, next to the bathroom/shower/kitchen area, which was perfect. Enjoyed the outdoor shower and walking trail. Road up was a bit rough, but our Sprinter made it!

This Hipcamp exceeded our expectations-it felt like a thoughtfully designed little oasis. The space had distinct areas that made it feel like a true home away from home: a cozy living room setup, a spot for meals, and a perfect campfire area, all tucked away in a really peaceful, secluded setting.
We hiked up to the lookout at sunset (highly recommend), visited the pigs, and got to meet Atlas, their sweet rescue dog. Our pup was absolutely in heaven the entire time.
Shane was incredibly responsive, welcoming, and easygoing, which made the whole experience even better. We’ll definitely be coming back.
