Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

If you've ever wondered what it might be like to camp on the moon, this is it. Completely removed from civilization and surrounded by a barren nature that is alive with the subtle presence of the universe. Seasonally, Spring wildflowers burst across the landscape. Cave paintings of Chumash Indians at Painted Rock remind us of those who lived before us. **Read on for more details.**
This is our home but we love to share our life in the outback. We believe it will give you a better appreciation of life's simpler side. That being said, and to maintain the balance here at home, we'd appreciate if you keep your dogs in your car until you get to your site.
Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable.
For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away.
Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.**
Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. Upon booking, you can look forward to an information packed email to help you make the very best of your trip!

Nopalito Farm has been in operation since late 2014, but the property itself has been a working farm for over 50 years. Lemons and avocados were the primary crops from the 70’s through the 00’s, and are still prominent throughout our 15 acres. Our predecessors then diversified the growing operation by planting a wide range of fruit trees ranging from guavas and passion fruit to peaches and figs. For a decade, hops were grown on 2 acres and were sold to breweries throughout southern California. Enjoy a rustic, no-fuss stay on our 20-acre working farm just 15 miles south of Bakersfield, with easy freeway access. Campsites sit along the pond - perfect for catch-and-release fishing, paddle boarding, or kayaking. We have a small area with farm animals (goats, sheep, peacocks and chickens) for you to enjoy. Expect a desert climate: hot summers, cold winters.
Each site includes a small table, potable water spigot, picnic table, and fire pit (bring your own wood). All sites are BYO tent or car-camping with the exception of our one Glamping Site which includes a queen bed.
Some sites have vehicle height limits (noted in site names), and cannot accommodate pop-ups or truck campers.
Amenities include one shared indoor toilet and an outdoor hot/cold shower. There are 2 kayaks and 2 paddleboards that are free to use amongst all guests. We offer self check-in and you're welcome to arrive anytime after 1PM; checkout is 11AM. Please respect quiet hours after 10PM if arriving late.
CAMP RULES
No Pets – Our dogs roam freely and protect the farm and see other animals as threats. You will be asked to leave with no refund if you bring a pet.
Quiet Hours: 10 PM–7 AM. If we receive complaints about noise, you’ll be asked to leave immediately.
1 Tent + 1 Car are permitted per Site, with the exception of Site 4 which allows 2 tents/2 cars. If you are a large group with multiple tents and families, you will need to book multiple sites. Each site has a maximum capacity, so if you put in 12 people, it will not show you all the sites available - put in 4 people and then you can pick which combination of sites you would like for your group.
No tents or canopies on the grass/lawn area.
No fireworks or open flames outside of designated fire pits. Propane burners or grills are permitted.
Do not feed the farm dogs - no treats or food, ever.
At checkout: dispose of trash in the dumpster by Site 5, soak any hot coals, wipe down tables, and put back the kayaks and paddleboards.
Shower use: Only farm-provided shampoo and soap are allowed.
Do not move firepits.
Commercial use of any photography or video content captured on the farm -including for business, promotional, or influencer purposes - is strictly prohibited without prior written consent.

This is an historic ranch with buildings dating from the 1880's to the mid 1930's and then some newer and spacious structures. See management for tours, history and accessibility to some structures and areas. This is a working ranch with a fascinating heritage going back three owners to an impressive land grant. There are 6 miles of trails and roads on the ranch shared by vehicles, hikers and equestrians. A map can be provided which will insure that neighboring properties are not trespassed on. All visitors to the ranch must have checked in with the office and management. There is an extra charge of $40.00 per person per day coming onto the ranch whether they are spending the night or just visiting. This charge is beyond and in addition to the charge made for the first four individuals on the reservation for each day. We find that many of our regular clients on the ranch are very friendly and helpful.

Come stay at our rustic campsite under some large oak trees next to a little open area by an ecological pond on our working ranch!
With 54 acres for our horses and avocados, we welcome guests to camp on a somewhat private part of the ranch (on occasion, equestrians may ride by). We can accommodate up to 8 more campers depending on the group type. We love welcoming families to the ranch, but like to approve larger groups ahead of time!
At the campsite you'll find picnic tables, a fire pit for small fires, and running water.
Minimal 110 Volt electrical outlet is at the campsite.
There is a fully functional unique bathroom made out of a converted horse trailer with a toilet and sink a few hundred yards from the site. Walking around the property, you'll see an activity barn and a historic 19th century cottage which houses a private library. Permission may be granted for entry to these structures if requested. There is an outdoor shower at the campsite with cold water only. Some firewood may be provided at no cost.
Campers, making reservations during cold winter months when the otherwise beautiful weather becomes cooler, should be aware that because of the proximity of a wind machine which makes a noise like a helicopter about 300 yards away from the campsite, on a neighboring property, may interrupt an otherwise peaceful and quiet experience.
The wind machine comes on automatically when the temperature drops to around 37 degrees so that avocados in the orchard do not suffer from a freezing temperature. Please note the trigger temperature for the machines is taken at individual low points on the adjacent property and may reflect as many as 6 degrees lower than what is found on forecast sites.
This machine probably might turn on maybe 7 nights in a year and only during the cold winter months.
Headlamps are a great idea, otherwise, flashlights for sure.

The library and restroom are a little ways away from the campsite
have lighting but it is very dark between the campsite and those facilities.
We are located only two miles to the ocean beaches and about a mile to a major shopping center. UCSB is just minutes away. Bicycling is very easy as all roads and access are flat.
Please return all furniture to the place(s) from which it was moved and thank you for putting out your fire(s) and carrying out your trash to the dumpster when leaving the campsite.

This is an incredibly historic site in Santa Barbara history. 2 tribes of Chumash Indians lived here for 10,000 years. This is where Spain landed and began colonizing the area. In the 1950's and 60's, this was the site of the World's largest orchid farm. There is a book called The Royal Rancho, if you are a history buff.
We are a farm on the beach just North of Santa Barbara and Goleta, Ca. You will camp in a historic, glass greenhouse with incredible ocean views. Inside is a cob pizza oven that works awesome. (Bring your own firewood),,, a place to pitch tents and tiny artistic structures to explore. You will have a private bath and shower (Primitive, no electricity, but the hot shower has the best view in the world of any shower!) Bring your own toiletries and whatnot.
Private beach access from our property. We have a barnyard with a multitude of farm animals. Limited electricity in greenhouse (A couple of extension chords).
If you are camping during the rain, be advised, it gets wet in the greenhouse. It's an antique after all!

Overlooking the Hemet Valley with gorgeous panoramic views of the San Jacinto Mountains, Villa Macala is reminiscent of an Italian Villa. The property landscape includes Olive Orchards throughout, a growing vineyard, fig trees, pomegranate trees.
Villa Macala is 15 minutes from Diamond Valley Lake where you can enjoy a wildflower trail, fishing or mountain bike trails, museum and water park. It is 20-30 minutes to Pachea Trail and Simpson Park where you can enjoy more great hiking and mountain bike trails. It is also a 30-minute drive to Temecula Wine Country.
We have 2 full outdoor bathrooms, one was most recently added at our Elderberry Camp Site (site 1), and is also close to site 4 our Oaks Campsite as well. (Please note our 2nd bathroom is a good walk uphill from the campsites). Our larger bathroom campers can use with a shower and small fridge to store your food.
We also have a playground with swing set for kids to enjoy.

Macala Orchards Olive Oil, Various Jellies and Jams Pomegranate Juice all made from what we grow are available for tasting upon request. Please let us know prior to arrival if you are interested in a scheduled tasting during your stay! We can provide a tasting if we have the proper staff during your visit. Our products are available for purchase, with or without a tasting. We recommend you bring cash if you are interested. We also take Venmo!
GETTING TO VILLA MACALA: The road up to Villa Macala is a dirt road uphill, all vehicles fair well, we attempt to keep the road maintained as well as possible, after heavy rains it is a bit more bumpy but safe. Drive slow!

Corey And his partner were very easy to communicate with and were super helpful in showing us our site and the farm. They even helped us get our car unstuck from the creek bed (100% my fault for being too ambitious) - all with a smile on their faces (as I was kinda freaking out) haha.
On top of the hospitality, we loved the peaceful location and all the animal life. Super fun, quick reset from LA life. We’d def return!

They are very passionate about what they do and make you feel like one of their friends instantly. If you dogs, this is the place for you! They campsites are very spaced out, so you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery around you.

Sierra and Darin were absolutely incredible hosts. I could really tell how much their place meant to them by the stories engraved in every site at Freedog.
Upon booking, I expected a hotel-like experience with little to no hospitality but I was beyond impressed with the experience I had at Sierra and Darin’s. They treated me, my partner and my dogs like family and always checked up
to see if we needed anything. One of the most memorable parts was the ATV tour in the beginning!
Nonetheless I will be book again! and I hope my review inspires more to book as well! Come enjoy this beautiful campsite equipped with everything u need! (Showers, Toliets, Shade, Tables, Hammocks and Propane fires!)

As expected from the glowing reviews, this place is srsly great. We came up for 4th of July and thoroughly enjoyed our time at Freedog Farm. Amazing hospitality, happy pups, semi-private sites with gorgeous views. Can’t beat that with a stick! Lotsa dust—and def glad it wasn’t hotter than 80 during our trip. Looking forward to coming back in the spring when the whole place is green and lush.

Jacob was super friendly and responsive.
The pizza oven was the cherry on top! We made some delicious pizza and enjoyed the views with our pup! The farm dog is super sweet also.

If you’re looking for the perfect family camping getaway, Split Rock Campground is an absolute gem. From the moment we arrived, every staff member made us feel genuinely welcome with their kindness and warmth. Our little one and her little friend had the sweetest time feeding the goats, and being surrounded by such beautiful nature made every moment feel peaceful and special.
The highlight of our trip was hiking up the hill with fellow campers to watch the Fourth of July fireworks. The view was breathtaking, and sharing it with such a friendly community made it unforgettable.

Our stay at Quiet Soledad was great. Catherine always made sure we were comfortable, and the campsite was wonderful. The kids loved playing in the water and collecting rocks. The location is also close to the beach, so we spent all of Saturday there and then came back to our cozy campsite.

We just wrapped up our second Fourth of July stay here, and it was just as amazing as the first! 🇺🇸🏕️
This campground has become one of our favorite places to make summer memories. The grounds are clean and well maintained and the atmosphere is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.
Spending the Fourth of July here for the second year in a row has become a tradition we look forward to. The beautiful surroundings and family-friendly environment make it such a special place to celebrate.

We booked the Hilltop Hideout because we had a large group, and it ended up being a great choice overall.
When we arrived, there were already tents set up in our reserved campsite that didn't belong to our group. We called the camp host, who confirmed there hadn't been a double booking. Within a few minutes, they came over and cleared the site for us. Later that evening, the people who had been camping there returned, but they couldn't confirm that they had actually reserved the spot. They may have been transients. We really appreciated how quickly the camp host handled the situation.
After that initial hiccup, we had an amazing time. The campsite layout was perfect for our group. The kids had plenty of room to run around and play in the lower area, while the adults relaxed in the upper section with a clear view of the kids. We never felt the need to leave our campsite because it had everything we needed for a fun and relaxing day.
The views were absolutely beautiful, especially at night. Although it was hot during the day, there was enough shade to stay comfortable. The evening temperature was just right for summer—not too hot and not too cold.
Overall, we had a fantastic experience and would definitely consider booking the Hilltop Hideout again. The spacious layout, beautiful scenery, and quick response from the camp host made it a memorable trip.

We had a wonderful two-night stay at Lone Juniper Ranch, and everyone in our group had a fantastic time.
The highlight of our stay was being so close to the animals. It was a unique experience to wake up and see camels, llamas, guanacos, and donkeys just outside the cabin. They were gentle, fun to watch, and made our stay truly memorable.
The ranch was peaceful and quiet, making it a perfect place to relax. At night, we enjoyed BBQ, stargazing, and simply spending time together around the cabin.
The cabins were thoughtfully designed, clean, and well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. We especially appreciated how comfortable and cozy they felt.
Marlin was friendly, responsive, and very accommodating throughout the booking process. Communication was excellent, and we always felt well taken care of.
If you're looking for a relaxing getaway surrounded by beautiful scenery and friendly animals, we highly recommend Lone Juniper Ranch. We would happily stay here again!

Freedog Farms is the rare kind of place where hospitality, views, and peace all show up at once and stay with me long after I’ve packed up my tent. From the moment I arrived, the hosts made me feel less like a customer and more like an old friend coming back to the farm. They greeted me warmly, gave a relaxed but thoughtful overview of the property, and checked in just enough to be sure I had everything I needed without ever hovering. Evenings around the main house felt like a small gathering—dogs stretched out by the fire, easy conversation, and that sense that I could join in or wander back to my camp whenever I wanted. Their hospitality felt genuine, generous, and deeply human.
The views from my campsite were nothing short of cinematic. I camped near the second-highest spot on the property, and from there I could actually see the 101 in the distance—an epic reminder that I was above it all, watching the world move far below. Mornings started above the fog line, with the marine layer slowly peeling back to reveal rolling hills and distant ridges. Sunrises and sunsets both put on a show, and even making coffee on my little camp stove felt special with mountains, clouds, and open sky as my kitchen backdrop.
This is one of the most peaceful places I’ve stayed. If you’re craving stillness, this place delivers. Once I settled in, the only sounds were birds, a soft breeze through dry grass, and the very distant sound of the 101.

Darin and Sierra are the definition of exceptional hosts. They were not only super accommodating with our ever changing arrival time but they made sure to welcome us with open arms late at night and with a nightcap, making us feel right at home :)
The property is vast and so beautiful. It feels both as if you are in the wilderness, while being extremely safe at the same time.
It may have been our first time at the Freedog Farm, but it will certainly not be the last. Can’t wait to be back!
