Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

SAN DIEGO CANYON CREEK is a SMALL PATCH of WOODS, NEAR a ROAD, in a NEIGHBORHOOD. In the midst of the trees we have a great view of the stars at night. Harbison Canyon is surrounded by rocky peaks, with a CREEK! We have multiple species of song birds, owls, hawks, and other wildlife that live in this Riparian Habitat. There is a chorus of frogs throughout the spring nights, and crickets year round!
It's a very short walk to the neighborhood park- equipped with several types of playground equipment and public creek access, a five minute drive to a Crestridge Ecological Reserve or 20 minutes to the entrance of Cuyamaca State Park and Cleveland National Forest.
We have three campsites and a cabin on about an acre of land. If you'd like to hang out on the property, we offer a table and chairs with each campsite to lounge in while enjoying the fresh air and nature. There are also a couple of hammocks available.
In addition, our SHARED amenities include an outdoor kitchen that includes a sink with hot water, 2 mini fridges,(full at times, extra coolers available) coffee maker, a two burner stove, a griddle, a toaster oven, blender, tea kettle, and a few pans, plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. Also here to SHARE is a Propane fire pit and BBQ area. The bathroom now includes a flush toilet, sink and shower. We are continuously making improvements.
Fun Fact:
Harbison Canyon was named after John Stewart Harbison - aka the King of the Bee Keepers. He arrived with over one hundred colonies of bees in 1874 and within 7 years he became the world's largest honey producer!
Today there are just a few bees in the area.

Beautiful natural campsites in the Valley of the Moon (Ojai Valley). Our sites are within an eighth of a mile of walking, running, biking, and riding trails from Ojai to the beaches of Ventura. On many days you can experience Ojai’s famous pink moments. You can hike the trails above Ojai, boat, eat, or picnic at Lake Casitas. Travel to nearby Ventura to shop, fish the pier, or take a deep sea fishing charter or Island charter to Whale watch or fish around the Channel Islands.
Please note the aerial view of the camping area recently placed by Hipcamp is NOT AT ALL REPRESENTATIVE of the current camping sites and shows a photo that is many years old when the site was merely land.
That photo is without any of the existing amenities or improvements. The actual sites are all Larger than Federal Park and Statepark guidelines, with averages of 20'x30' for campsites and 20'x40' for a long RVCampsite.
We have planted many young trees and continue to plant trees and native shrubs around and near the sites. We have picnic tables, table coverings, fire pits, and camping rugs/footprints. There is also an outdoor shower, a shower tent with hot water, and an upgraded porta-potty with a sink.
Note: During times when high heat is predicted, we strongly recommend that our Hipcampers bring pop-up shade tents or canopies for their sites.
The Hipcamp is adjacent to our working ranch, and any photos of old sheds, trucks, a wood lot, or other equipment are NOT on the Hipcamp, but you will drive past that property to get to the separate Hipcamp area.
Wineries, Farmer's Markets, Craft Breweries, dispensaries, and more are within 10 to 15 minutes of our site. Our location allows moments when you may see Hawks, Owls, Geese, Swallows, Robins, Bluebirds, and more.
We offer both tent and RV camping.

DISCLAIMER: This is quite different from staying in an ordinary hotel. We are really in NATURE here - these are older cottages hand-built by artists in the forest. They are very rustic! It's like living in a mountain village, with other cottages nearby. While we work very hard to keep our places pristine and spotless - if anyone in your group will faint if they see a bug or lizard or little frog inside - then this probably isn't the place for you. Please be very careful booking cottages for someone else - like your parents just arriving from another continent - they might prefer something more conventional.
Some folks describe our places as a luxurious form of camping. We make our cottages very comfortable - they have all the basics - electricity - wifi - most have kitchens, bath or shower and comfy clean beds. But they are not like a hotel with perfect walls and a sterile atmosphere. Please look at all the pictures and read all the reviews. We can't offer refunds just because we don't meet the standards of a normal hotel. Most people are charmed by this idyllic and bohemian lifestyle - but it's not for everyone.

I wanted to share what an amazing host Catherine was! She was incredibly kind and welcoming. She even stopped by to make sure everything was going well and shared a quick story about the stagecoach stable that still exists on her property, which was such a cool piece of history.
The campsite we stayed at was literally right next to a beautiful creek. Surprisingly, it’s still running strong even during the summer, so I can only imagine how amazing it must be in the spring!
We were also fortunate enough to experience some incredible wildlife, including owls, deer, and even a couple of foxes. They came by sniffing around our BBQ area, so we made sure to clean everything up, pick up all the trash, and dispose of it properly in the large trash bins in front of the property.
We had an amazing experience and would definitely recommend staying here. Catherine was a wonderful host, and the property was beautiful, peaceful, and full of nature and history. We would absolutely come back!

Very private and lovely, nestled between mountains just outside San Diego. Star gazing was AMAZING and many thoughtful amenities were available in this spacious outdoor kitchen. We grilled a fantastic dinner on the propane grill provided, had everything needed! Fridge, very cold freezer, ice in the freezer a griddle, two hot plates, tea kettle and toaster oven.
Our host was so gracious and generous, she is a San Diego native, her family has been a pillar in the San Diego community since the 1800s, so rare to meet someone so knowledgeable about the area.
The trees, flowers, butterflies and one cute little lizard made this campsite magical.
Bathroom and shower was immaculate.
The entire area is a work of art and cared for by our musician host.
We were so lucky to find this place!

My first trip to split rock was an impromptu solo night glamping with a view Everything was surprisingly very cozy and clean. The beds were comfortable, had solar lighting, a private bathroom with hot showers, sink, and toilet. Wonderful experience that had me set on coming back with my kids and our tent.
I’ve gone back to their Oak Grove site with my children twice now for weekend trips and it’s been even better than my glamping experience! As a mom/widow on a budget, I can’t begin to express how grateful I am to have access to this little piece of heaven. Camping prices have gotten ridiculous, so to have something so reasonably priced AND have access to toilets, showers, and extra events at a reasonable cost- YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
There’s so much to explore, so much privacy, the people who own and run the place are so friendly and helpful. Most of all, we just LOVE our animal friends that visit. We look forward to our frequent pop ins from Molly and we’ve had some goat friends swing by, too.
The Oak Grove provides a good amount of shade and a breeze that kept us pretty cool, but if you need to cool off, the Santa Margarita River trail is nearby and there are a couple little hidden beaches that are accessible by pulling off the road. Not sure if these are the exact coordinates, but should be close by- (33.3987265, -117.2631918)

This was our very first HipCamp experience. We had been road tripping for our pup's 11th birthday and we stayed one night. We absolutely LOVE the rustic architecture of the cabin (and the deco) and especially the garden (the pictures on the app don't do it justice). We arrived shortly after check-in time to rest under the shade of the trees/plants selection. We loved learning about the history of the cabin.
We unfortunately have to point few things about this hipcamp.
* The entrance of the property, even though it says in the directions to be "in front of" was hard to see from the road: no signs, no number, dirt entrance doesn't indicate it is the actually alley to take. We thought we were at a wrong address.
* The rentals on the app seem to indicate 2 cabins only but there is a RV next to cabin 2 + a main house + another unit which we had no idea if they were rentals or not.
* Quiet time of 10 pm was not respected by the other guests which we found out we had at 1.30 am when they came back and made loud noises (cabin 1 + RV). When you are staying for 1 night and road tripping, sleeping is important. Quiet time is indicated on a sheet of paper in the kitchenette only, which people might not read.
* Cabin is located next to a major road that gives you access to downtown easily but that means you hear traffic.

Perfect spot to spend the night while visiting Ojai for the day and for a show at Libbey Bowl! Lovely flat easy pull in spot with trees for shade and lots of birds and bunnies about. Beautiful view of the Topatopas. The sheep and donkeys across the way at a neighboring property were fun to watch too. Peter was very friendly and welcoming and his directions are spot on and easy to follow (don't let your gps shouting at you to do a U-turn as soon as you pull in fool you! Lol)

Joel is a wonderful host and this was a dream spot in San Diego! Near everything. One of the best urban RV spots I’ve used in the whole of the USA. Water, electric, outdoor shower, quiet, spacious, and a cute dog! Thank you Joel! A much needed refreshing stay.

This was a great oasis! Our family spent a week there with our 24' trailer. There was plenty of privacy and it felt like we were far away from the city. It was quiet and we felt safe. We would consider staying here again next time we're in the area!

We had a great time here. The tent spots had plenty of shade and were close to clean bathrooms and outdoor shower. The property is huge with plenty of hiking and exploring. It was so cool walking down to hang out with the animals. The place is very chill and everyone (including the animals) are so friendly and welcoming. Bailey the host dog became best buds with our dog and was such a great little tour guide 😊 We’re definitely going back!

We had such a great time here. The tent camping spots were shaded and close to clean bathrooms and outdoor shower. It was so cool to walk down and see all the animals along with our dog. Bailey, the host dog, ended up being a great tour guide and best buddy to our dog. We hiked the entire property and came up on some of the mountain goats that were just as friendly as down near the main farm area. We had an absolutely amazing time we stayed an extra day and will definitely be back. The place is so chill and the people there are very friendly and welcoming. I’d definitely recommend this place if you are looking for dog friendly camping and love animals 😊

1 night at San Diego Canyon Creek
A lovely little (air-conditioned!) cabin on some beautiful creekside property nestled in nature—with a comfy bed. If you want to get away from the city and spend a night in nature without wrestling with a tent or forgoing plumbing, I highly recommend this spot! (There is access to a surprisingly well appointed—and chic—bathroom with a spacious shower. Also a quaint outdoor kitchen area with refrigerators.) Host Laura could not have been friendlier. My only suggestion would be a little more outdoor lighting in the public areas. But this is a beautiful location I would go to again.

Really sweet little spot lots of cute touches Laura is communicative and her space is cozy and accommodating.. really appreciate the outdoor communal kitchen love that bathroom has shower and each camp has its own table and chairs. the night lights are a nice touch besides some flashing… i might add a hammock to the waterfall site but all in all great setup… def gets hot in morning and full sun in parking area but afternoon plenty of shade and umbrella helps take care of morning. if you want morning shade on tent maybe bring easy up !

This is my second time booking King Creek Campground, and we cannot wait to return next year. It is spacious, plenty of trees offer shade, and just remote enough to unplug and catch some great starry skies. Would absolutely recommend, especially for groups.
