Beautiful, Convenient, but Dusty
Tent · With kids
Coyote Crossing so very close to Big Bend! The campsites are spacious and well laid out and labeled. It also has a variety of beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Maverick Mountain to the East is fantastic from the campsite. We tent camped with 1 adult and three children.
The only downside of our stay was the dust. Because of the lack of surrounding vegetation, the campsite ground is a very fine dessert dust. We experienced a pretty substantial dust storm during our stay—we had to retreat to our car. The dust was unbearably making its way into our tent, tubs, car, etc. Our second night was better (no dust storm) but we still woke up to a layer of dust on us and our gear. One surprising thing about the fine dust and our gear was that the particles seemed to jam the zippers on our tents. The dust was also hard on our throats and sinuses.
I don't know the current drought conditions for Terlingua (which is just up the road) and Big Bend (everything looked pretty dry), but it seemed to have significant impact on our camping experience.
Don't get me wrong. The property is beautiful and in a great location. However, given the weather circumstances, we only stayed 2 of 4 nights at our campsite. If I could do it again, I would seriously consider the drought conditions and the makeup of the soil in a given campsite.
