A 1960s caravan and a family-sized safari tent in a wooded Cornish valley

Get off grid on a truly sustainable getaway in Cornwall by staying at Meadowsweet Holidays’ vintage caravan or safari tent. Both are tucked in a wooded valley and are powered by solar energy with water from an on-site borehole. There’s no WiFi and no mobile signal here and, for every stay, a tree is planted within the 12-acre smallholding you’ll be staying on. The site is far from main roads and, with your mobile powered down, the only sounds will be birdsong, the babbling of a nearby brook, and the crackle of your campfire.

Choose Bluebell, the 1960s caravan, as your home in this natural environment and you'll be bedding down in a two-tone ice cream and baby blue Cheltenham caravan. She’s perfectly sized for couples offering bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen too. For everything else, there’s the great outdoors; a little bit of which you have truly to yourselves. This 12-acre plot is home to the guests of just one other glamping getaway, the family-sized Meadowsweet Safari Tent, and your hosts themselves; Emma and Jim. But everyone is well spaced and you are welcome to explore all of it; in fact there’s a public footpath, which runs through the place and can lead you out and away.

If you want to keep your holiday truly green, leave the car where you parked it and walk out to explore. For a day on the beach, it’s a 40-minute walk through the wooded Coombe Valley, which, after a couple of miles, emerges at Duckpool Bay. And if you run out of supplies on site, you can walk through leafy lanes and undulating fields to reach the shop and cafe in the neighbouring village. A bike, bus, or car will get you further though. This is the very north west of Cornwall, a few miles north of Bude, so surf, sea, and the South West Coast Path are never hard to find.

Willow Safari Tent

100% (2)
Safari tent · Sleeps 6
Discover the untamed beauty of the North Cornwall coast. When you arrive you will cross a small ford which will bring you along the leafy driveway. Come to the house where we will greet you and show you to your tent. Sit back and relax. There is an abundance of wildlife. In the evenings you can lie back and look at the stars and be woken in the morning to the sound of birds singing. Willow Safari Tent has a double bed and a set of bunk beds. The bedroom area is closed off behind a thick curtain keeping it private from the rest of the tent. The kitchen, dining and sitting area is all open plan and has everything you need. Including books and board games for rainy days. On the decked porch area, there is a gas cooker and there are pleny of pans and cooking utensils if needed. The toilet and shower are located in a separate outbuilding which is shared with the guests staying in Bluebell Caravan in the next field. The caravan and cottage where the owners live are on site but separate enough to provide complete privacy. The owners have a very friendly dog called Monty, who will give you a noisy welcome when you arrive in your car. There is a parking area not far from the tent, so you won't have far to carry your things. The site is hidden at the bottom of a rural valley and a 3 minute drive to the nearest shop, located in the aptly named village "Shop". The nearest beach is Duckpool which you can reach by following a beautiful woodland walk through the woods along the public footpath to reach which takes 40 minutes or if you want to get there quicker 5 minutes drive.

Set amongst 12 acres of unspoiled countryside at the bottom of a green valley in north Cornwall. 40 minutes walk from Duckpool Beach (7 minutes drive). About eight miles north of Bude, it is situated directly on a public footpath, the perfect way to explore the surrounding area and dramatic north Cornwall coastline or continue along into Northern Devon. Located far from the bustle of busy roads, at the bottom of a secluded valley, surrounded by wild flowers, lush hedgerows and rippling streams, you will find a tranquillity rarely found today in this hectic age. We welcome well behaved dogs, but make an additional charge of £20 for pets. The caravan and safari tent are both off grid. The safari tent electricity comes from a small solar field and the caravan has its own panel beside it. The water is from our borehole. The shower which serves for both the caravan and safari tent is located in a nearby outbuilding. Bluebell the caravan is set in its own small private field with outside seating and a fire pit. Willow Safari Tent is located nearby at the top of a small bank and has its own small seating area next to it and use of the field area it is set in. A public footpath runs alongside the property and visitors are also very welcome to walk around the 12 acres of land belonging to Ham Mill.
Nearby attractions

Meadowsweet Holidays is located at Ham Mill and you are welcome to explore the land owned by your hosts. There’s also a footpath which runs through the land, providing a handy way to get out on walks in the area. Head south and you will walk through the woodland of Coombe Valley, and can eventually make your way to Duckpool Beach. This remote beach offers pebbles and rockpools at high tide and an expanse of sand at low tide. There is a small National Trust car park there if you prefer to drive (it’s between two and three miles by road). You can also join the South West Coast Path here for stunning coastal walks. Other nearby beaches include Sandymouth Bay (four miles south) and Summerleaze Beach in Bude (seven miles) – which has plenty of facilities including the opportunity to learn to surf. That’s also on offer at Widemouth Bay, another few miles further south. The site is close to the border with Devon and Welcombe Mouth Bay and Westward Ho! Beaches are also reached in a drive of about half an hour.

Food and drink

The closest shop to Meadowsweet Holidays is Furze Stores in the aptly-named village of Shop. It is well-stocked with all the basics and has plenty of local produce too – and there’s a cafe, making it a nice destination to walk to. It’s about a mile-and-a-half from site. The Bush Inn, two miles from site in Crosstown is the closest pub offering good food and great folk nights. It has a garden with lovely countryside views and serves food and local drinks. And if you don’t fancy the pub, how about a cream tea at the tearooms in the nearby Church of St Morwenna and John the Baptist? It’s just up the road and recommended by your hosts. There’s a Co-op supermarket in Kilhampton where you’ll also find more places to eat and drink and takeaways too. Bude, with even more choice, is just over six miles from site.
