Sparrow Lake Camp is situated on the southernmost tip of the majestic Canadian Shield.  The site is known to have been a campground for bands of the Huron people prior to the European intrusion.  It is considered probable that Samuel de Champlain, the first European to explore Huronia, spent a night on this site in the 17th Century. In 1892, what would become the west side of the current property was sold by pioneer Captain Thomas Stanton to Toronto's renowned Massey family to act as their summer resort.  The resort sported the main lodge, dining room, and cottages and was only accessible by train and steamer. From the onset, the Masseys used the site as a summer retreat for the Young Men's Bible League of the Central Methodist Church. Today, the property is a thriving summer camp that also offers overnight tent stays with stunning lake views.

With 80 acres of The Land Between- the ecotone where the Great Canadian Shield meets the St. Lawrence Lowlands- it's easy to live well. Kilometres of trails criss-crossing the property, minutes' drive to larger networks of cross-country ski trails and lakes for big and small boating, swimming and fishing or getting the necessities at the local family-owned grocery store, or hardware store mean you really don't have to go far to get big and small adventures in every day. We can all watch the birds- big and small, visit trees and waterfowl migrating with the seasons over the wetland. We have a number of canoes, paddles, PFDs and safety kits, along with all the camping equipment you'd need for day adventures or backcountry canoe camping trips available at an additional coompetitive rate. Silent Lake is a beautiful provincial park 15 minutes' drive to the north with more cross country ski trails, a front-country zero motor boat lake (hence the name). There are walk-in and car-camping sites at Silent Lake. Our property nearly backs into Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park; at nearly 40,000 hectares it's the largest provincial park south of Algonquin. We can give you lots of tips on canoe tripping routes through the park, from easy to difficult, or you can just head into the park for the day, head to Loon Call Lake boat access for a swim & picnic- we strongly recommend the annual Ontario Parks Day Use Permit- totally worth it. Given that North Kawartha Hideaway is located on Highway 28, we are first served in terms of road maintenance in the winter months. Highway 28 has seen some significant roadwork improvements from Peterborough to Apsley over the last 5 years, all wrapped up now, so it’s just a bit slower on the cottage-going weekends.

Natural Joy! Cosy Canoe Cottage

The cottage is at the edge of a large wilderness area. We supply an ultra-safe large canoe with paddles and lifejackets. It's an easy and fun 15 minute paddle to reach the cottage. The cottage is an artistic gem on a safe and quiet lake with beavers and loons and numerous bird species -- owls, herons, hawks, ospreys, and many migratory songbirds. In over 20 years of experience on the lake, we've seen no bears. It's a cosy three-room place with a small bedroom (8x12) with an antique double bed; a main room (16 x12) with a single bed; and a kitchen (8X12). Sleeps 3, max. Access to the cottage is up a short set of irregular stone stairs from the lake. This could be an impediment for elderly or frail people. The lake is not a private lake. There are other cottages. But it's a very quiet lake and often there's no one else there. The landscape is very similar to Algonquin Park's. North Kawartha is famous as the birthplace of the canoe. This is a thinly-populated landscape of rugged granite bluffs, thickly-forested hills and valleys, and gorgeous lakes that remain quiet and peaceful even during the hottest summer weeks. This place was made by and for lovers, artists, poets, musicians, dreamers, writers, environmentalists, ecologists, escapists...and their children. Enjoy!

This property was settled by the Irish in the mid 1800’s. Originally inhabited by Algonquin peoples the land was cleared for farming and they erected several building including a large German style hand hewn timber frame barn which still stands and is used today. The farm house was built in the 1910 and the original log cabins have been reframed into artistic buildings. It is wild to look around and imagine what life was like before now in a time when the land had no boundry lines and was traversed by indigenous peoples of this area. We have a great respect for those who have walked before us and a deep sense of gratitude for being here today. Learn more about this land: Perched high on a hilltop with scenic views of the surrounding area resting on the Canadian Shield! We are offering a gentle landing for those wishing to relax and enjoy nature.  We have several options for camping sites and experiences for campers to choose from. There are 6 campsites available for tent and RV/trailer campers. We can accommodate vehicles up to 30ft in length (no hookups available at this time). Pets are welcome! Go for a hike up the mountain, meander along the streams, walk to the lake 15min down a beautiful country road. Enjoy what we have going on at the art barn where we host artists in residence studios, music jams, workshops and events. Natural Joy! Cosy Canoe Cottage

16. Natural Joy! Cosy Canoe Cottage

55km from Haliburton · 1 site · Lodging · Bancroft, ON
The cottage is at the edge of a large wilderness area.

Enjoy an evening around your private campfire or perhaps join some folks gathered at the communal fire pit under the stars. Book a sauna session for an evening, and possibly a massage or healing session. There’s always something to do on this farm😋
