Recently we decided to share our property that we love and have enjoyed so much for two reasons: to give others the opportunity to enjoy it and to put money away for university. Our parents, Mark and Sarah, got behind the vision and are excited to be part of this project with us. We would describe our property as: home…and a really fun place to grow up! Our parents thought that wasn’t descriptive enough for Hipcamp so they’ve helped us describe it more. We live in a quiet neighbourhood in a forest that has been a source of peace, relaxation, and fun for us in our growing up years. We’ve noticed that people who visit here say they feel the same way. With plenty of space for kids to explore and adults to relax, our 3 acre forest is perfect for down time with a book in the hammock or a nature walk before dinner. Amenities and service: A single, tidy campsite with picnic table surrounded by mature and gently manicured forest, as well as a hammock, and a new construction outhouse. (Go dad!) We love hospitality, so though we won’t always be around when you’re here, if we are and you need something you can simply ask and we’ll do our best to provide what you need. To help you feel welcome we provide a fresh, cool jug of drinking water and large container of fresh potable water as well as access to an outside tap to fill water containers if needed (upon request) , power to charge devices (upon request), and a campfire ring with firewood (sorry about the frequent fire bans. Huge bummer. We will post current fire ban status while you’re here.) Surroundings and local attractions: Our property is situated in a low traffic rural residential area within ¬ 3 km to Sandy Pool Regional Park (5 min) A family favourite! ¬ 10 km to the Cowichan Valley Museum (Duncan Totem Tour) (13 min) ¬ 14 km to the Pacific Northwest Raptor Center (15 min) ¬ 19 km to the Hand of Man Museum (20 min) ¬ 20 km to Lake Cowichan (16 min) for swimming, boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc Note: Lake Cowichan is also home to ‘The Tube Shack’ where you can rent tubes to float down the Cowichan River and catch the Tube Shack Bus back to your car. We do it every summer! Fun fact! It’s a 10-minute bike ride from our house to the Cowichan Valley Bike Trail. *(All destinations calculated from our dining table by Google maps) There are multiple well known hikes within 20 minutes (we suggest googling Stoney Hill Trail, Mt Tzouhalem, and Mt. Prevost.)

Located 2 min, from the Transcanada Trail, 20 min. walk to the Kinsol Trestle, a World Heritage Site with beautiful swimming holes right underneath the bridge. 20 min. to next Grocery store and 22-25 min to Duncan. Approx. 50 min- 1 hr to Victoria. 20 min. to Cowichan Bay or the Cowichan River. The Tiny Cabin is an ideal getaway for couples or good friends, and a perfect getaway for solo reflection and artist retreat. We have a fully equipped pottery studio on the property and the kitchen is stocked with our handmade dishes. By request I can teach pottery lessons if you have always wanted to try it out. There is a massage therapist on the land that offers Esalen Massaga, as well as Foot Reflexology and Craniosacral Therapy. Pleas inquire for cost of sessions. The Cabin is brand-new and has a big deck as additional outdoor space with a patio corner including a table and an outdoor shower with forest view through a glass wall. We provide biodegradable organic soaps, shampoo, conditioner and cleaning products as well as fresh towels, wash cloths and a hair dryer. An on-demand propane tank will provide hot water for the shower and the kitchen which includes a new small propane cookstove. Apart from that the kitchen is stocked with all new appliances such as a fridge with freezer, a toaster oven that fits a 12” pizza, a toaster, an electric water kettle, an espresso maker and a french press for coffee. We provide organic tea and coffee, organic sugar, salt, pepper and oil. We also have seasonal availability of farm fresh eggs from our free range chickens. There is everything you need to cook a meal and clean up after plus store your leftovers in the fridge. The eating table can be folded up to create more floor space. The sleeping loft is accessed by a ladder with extra safety bar to hold on to and support you climbing up and down from the loft. Physical ability to use ladder is a requirement. There is enough room to stand in the middle of the loft but not under the slanted ceiling areas. Our mini wood stove warms the place quickly and we have firewood onsite to use. Drinking water comes in excellent quality straight from the tap from a 250 ft deep mountain well. The composting toilet has a great view of the pond and is supplied with toilet paper and peat moss. It’s a stone’s throw away from the cabin and there are flashlights available plus solar lights and torches along the way. Beside the pond you have the opportunity to relax in a family sized hammock under big trees and enjoy the sounds of nature. The land is shared by a handful of people but we all respect each others privacy.

We are located on the edge of the wilderness just 30 minutes north of Victoria. Our camping area is very quiet and private. We are next to a spring fed lake that contains trout and small mouth bass and it is great for swimming during the summer months. There are no motor boats permitted on the lake, however it is perfect for paddle boards, floaties and kayaks. There are several walking trails throughout our 10 acre property and the Trans Canada Trail is just minutes away. We have a large lawn for playing frisbee or bocce ball and a corn hole pitch (also known as beanbag toss). There is a fire pit, pinic table, 2 patios with tables, chairs and umbrellas and a pit toilet. A sink and potable water are also available. We are situated in forested land on the edge of the wilderness. There is deer, bear, cougar, beaver, martins and an abundance of birds in the area. This is a great location for those hiking or biking the Trans-Canada Trail. Adults and small dogs only. Currently our sites are only available on weekdays and is unavailable from November to the end of April.

About

Set in a forest off of a windswept 1.6-kilometre beach, French Beach Provincial Park’s shoreline and its trails attract beachcombers and those looking for a chance to stretch their legs. The area is also a popular viewing point for the 20,000 gray whales that migrate north from February to early May and then make the return trip in fall. Campers have 69 campsites available to them in the main campground, as well as a group site. Hikers will want to check out the nearby Juan de Fuca Marine Trail for day hikes, multi-day hikes, and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. French Beach Provincial Park lies within the traditional territory of the T'Sou-ke First Nation.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Reservations are recommended and available for dates between May and September through BC Parks’ Discover Camping website (groups from March to October).
  2. If camping on weekends or holidays (Canada Day, BC Day, or Labour Day), secure your spot as far in advance of your trip as you can.
  3. During peak season, you may be able to score a first-come, first-served spot, especially mid-week if you show up right at check-out time (11am).

When to go

French Beach Provincial Park is open for camping year-round, though water will be shut off and sani-service will be unavailable outside of the regular May to October season. For the best weather, think about booking between mid-May and mid-September (though this will also be the busiest time in the park). The grey whale migration of mothers and calves from April to early May is also popular. 

Know before you go

  • Thirteen kilometres northwest of French Beach is the 47-kilometre Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, popular for hikes and wildlife viewing.
  • The campground has limited amenities and no showers.
  • There are some barrier-free facilities at this park, including a wheelchair-accessible walking trail.
  • The nearby communities of Jordan River, Shirley, and Sooke feature restaurants and other services.
