The cottage is at the edge of a large wilderness area. We supply an ultra-safe large canoe with paddles and lifejackets. It's an easy and fun 15 minute paddle to reach the cottage. The cottage is an artistic gem on a safe and quiet lake with beavers and loons and numerous bird species -- owls, herons, hawks, ospreys, and many migratory songbirds. In over 20 years of experience on the lake, we've seen no bears. It's a cosy three-room place with a small bedroom (8x12) with an antique double bed; a main room (16 x12) with a single bed; and a kitchen (8X12). Sleeps 3, max. Access to the cottage is up a short set of irregular stone stairs from the lake. This could be an impediment for elderly or frail people. The lake is not a private lake. There are other cottages. But it's a very quiet lake and often there's no one else there. The landscape is very similar to Algonquin Park's. North Kawartha is famous as the birthplace of the canoe. The property has an upwards slope offering great views of the Mazinaw from nearly everywhere on the property. Come unplug and unwind in Ontario's Land-O-Lakes area. This property does get quite a bit of road noise during the day time hours. However once the sun goes down move your eyes to the sky and enjoy an unparalleled view of the night sky in one of Ontario's best dark skies area.

Absolutely no dumping/ littering on the property. To get to the waterfalls is considered to be a moderate to advanced level hiking ability required. There are no neighbours. There is no electricity or bathroom facility. Paul's cabin is so cozy and situated within such a stunning and remote area. We loved canoeing around Ragged Lake and looking the beautiful big faces of the Canadian Shield. We also loved just starring out at the lake and looking at the birds, the trees and the stars. My partner and I had such a lovely time and will definitely be visiting again!

Always a pleasure tent camping at Middle Earth, this was our third time here, second time at the woodlands camp site! The fall colours were incredible and we got to hang out with the squirrels and toads. This spot is very private with lots of space for parking and tents, and a nice large fire ring. Definitely prepare the necessities for taking care of business in the wild!

Weekend Trip to Big Rock Eco Retreat & Campgrounds

What a wonderful time away where it felt that time stood still in the midst of falling leaves and glorious rays of sunshine. Jason and Susie ensured to meet all needs with prompt responses and, when needed, support. We enjoyed viewing the property, a peaceful boat ride and, of course, the accommodations. We didn't want to leave. A true bucket filling experience where we left feeling relaxed and grateful. Only regret is not booking an extra day.

Our third time staying at one of Kelly’s sites. Each one has been terrific, exactly as pictured. Pit toilets are cleaner and better equipped than some hotels! Kelly is a fantastic host. We really appreciated that she had her husband cut up a tree and bring it to our site for firewood as none was available for purchase and, being on motorcycles, she knew we would not be carrying any.

Le service était impeccable, notamment pour le bois, et on nous a même prêté des kayaks pour explorer le lac. L’endroit est d’une tranquillité rare : on peut admirer la nature dans toute sa splendeur, contempler le ciel étoilé une fois la nuit tombée et entendre le cri des huards au fil de la journée. Les cabines sont parfaitement équipées avec tout le nécessaire pour cuisiner, ce qui rend l’expérience encore plus agréable. De plus, la marina à proximité est très pratique pour ceux qui souhaitent profiter davantage du plan d’eau. Un lieu idéal pour les amoureux de la nature et de la tranquillité. Nous recommandons sans hésiter!

Brian was a great host, welcoming and gave great tips on the area and things to do. His campsites are well looked after and it was nice and quiet option compared to the busyness of provincial parks this time of year.
