Beautiful view of the night sky
My boyfriend and I wanted a weekend getaway so planned out a trip and booked at the Double R Ranch for one night tent camping. We ended up arriving pretty late in the day but Ron was understanding and very communicative and helpful. The starry night sky was a breathtaking experience and listening to all the sounds of the night made for an amazing experience.
Will definitely be booking again!
All I can say is WOW! To be honest I had planned a very last minute trip to Kartchner Caverns State Park (a visit I also highly recommend to everyone) and was just looking for a safe place to set up my tent the night before my tour so I wouldn’t have a long day of driving, but what I got out of this experience was much more. The drive to the site was beautiful, and I was greeted upon arrival by the friendliest and goofiest dog pack, and Pumpkin and Midnight the sweetest cats. I grew up on a farm in Oregon and didn’t realize how much I had missed the smell of hay, and was so excited that I was there during the evening feeding time for all of the horses and cows (and calves! The absolute cutest little guys). The horses were so inquisitive and wanted to double check I hadn’t snuck a treat for them in any pockets. I didn’t sign up for the horseback ride but I really wish I did, and fully intend to come back and do just that in the near future.
The sunset and sunrise as you can guess was spectacular, but the STARS! I could see the Milky Way and easily pick out several constellations. I think I spent half the night just gawking up at the sky.
The accommodations were also amazing, Ron has done a really great job making everything accessible and comfortable for their guests. There was a super clean and well-built ‘outhouse’ with running water and a flush toilet, and a separate water hose/pump for filling up as well. I also had a bit of an impromptu alarm clock of two adorable ranch dogs waiting for me with wagging tails when I crawled out of my tent in the morning, which in my opinion is the best greeting, ever. There is also a great table at the tent site perfect for making morning coffee, and for making breakfast if you brought any. Unfortunately since my trip was planned a bit last minute, that meant my packing was also last minute and I left my breakfast at home on the kitchen counter, oops, so I had to leave a bit earlier than I would have liked that morning of departure to find some grub in Benson. I was sad to leave but am excited for my next trip back to the Double R Guest Ranch!
Awesomeness and simplicity at it's finest 👌
My 2 small children and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay; even though this was a spur of the moment trip.
Safety oriented horse rides, clean air, and especially the "positive(ly) professional" Ranchers!
If you didn't know, this Ranch has more rentals units & horse ride options online. Worth recurring visit for sure!
Beautiful ranch in the wild west
This space is absolutely beautiful! Very sweet people. You can socialize or keep to yourselves if you choose. We had a tent spot but they do have a cabin available as well. The “outhouse” is actually a bathroom with toilet, sink, running water, electricity and even an OUTLET! Very short walk from the tent and the cabin. The drive to the property is a little rustic if you’re from the city but my Mitsubishi Outlander (NOT 4WD) made it just fine. They have lots of dogs that roam the property so if you’re not dog friendly or your pet isn’t dog friendly this definitely isn’t the place for you. It’s also a short drive to “town” Benson, there’s an amazing cafe there “the farmhouse cafe” with exceptional food! Drive another 30 minutes or less and you’re back in the Wild West of Tombstone! We really really enjoyed our stay here!
This campsite was great! Ron was so nice and was helpful but did not intrude. It was so cold during our stay that we had to leave early but that was our choice. Ron offered one of his trailers that we could stay in but we decided to change our itinerary altogether. It is in the middle of nowhere so just know that but with that you get amazing 360 Mountain View’s and more stars than you ever thought existed. We didn’t get to ride the horses but will come back to do it in the future. Thank you Ron!
Authentic ranch experience
Pros: Ron was an excellent host and very accommodating which we appreciated, our campsite had a campfire as requested, the view of the stars at night is beautiful as well as the sunset over the hills, the ranch dogs are super friendly and sweet, authentic ranch experience, great quality outhouse, offers horseback riding, some great drives to scenic sites nearby.
Cons: Dirt road in was super tough on our Prius and took a long time (heads up for those with that type of vehicle), campsite wasn’t very private (next to second campsite and close to cabin and RV.)
If you’re looking for an authentic AZ ranch experience, one that allows you to meet/connect with others and go horseback riding, and enjoy a great view of the stars and sunset — and you don’t have a small vehicle — I recommend this place.
Welcoming desert ranch
I loved staying at the ranch! I met a few long term visitors while there who all were very nice and welcoming. I didn't interact with the host much but it was super pleasant to watch the horses and take a walk around the property. Bummed I didn't do a horse riding tour while there!
Relaxing desert retreat
Had a very lovely time on this beautiful and remote ranch. Lots of horses and friendly dogs. Nice to have a flushing toilet that was clean and close by. This is a perfect place to camp if you are just starting out camping with kids or are not a fan of "roughing it". Coyotes howling at night, the stars at night are amazing and not too far from. civilization. I definitely would stay here again and book a horse ride next time.
