Camp Stoney Meadows

13 sites ¡ Lodging, RVs, Tents120 acres ¡ Big Bend, CA
We've been enjoying this special spot with family and friends for over 25 years, and now we want to share it with you. We appreciate the four seasons here on our 120 acres in the beautiful Cascade Range between Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. Our property is adjacent to Shasta Trinity National Forest. It's a working ranch with tree farms, animals, hydroelectric power, sawmill, gardens, orchards, creeks, springs, trails, and our camp alongside Kosk Creek. We're 54 miles from Redding off of 299E, (about 1-1/2 hour drive). The last mile or so of the road here can be pretty rough, but on arrival, you'll know it's worth the trip! No Cell phone service available here, so it's the perfect opportunity to unplug. We do have a land line up at the house in case of an emergency. Also, if you really need it, WiFi is available at the house.

The best camping near Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park guide

Overview

About

Ahjumawi is a one-of-a-kind park. For starters, it can only be accessed by boat – which automatically gives it a bit of flair. Once you paddle your way to shore, the turf is dominated by lava rock, pine forests, hills covered with wildflowers – all intercepted by a series of waterways. This park is truly an outdoor lover’s playground and offers an amazing place for a day or weekend retreat. The aqua colored waters offer a refreshing contrast to the park’s unique landscape. The park itself is a collection of “recent” (read: three to five thousand years old) lava flows that have formed into large areas of jagged black basalt. Since most all of the park is covered in this landscape, we feel like it makes the perfect spot for some old school mission impossible. The catch? There are no couches to jump onto and the lava is oh so real.

When to go

The ideal times to visit Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park are during the warmer months of spring and summer, when the climate is pleasant for exploration. Cooler fall and winter days offer a different kind of serene beauty, but layered clothing is recommended. Sunrise to sunset park hours provide ample time for daytime adventures.

Know before you go

  • Access to Ahjumawi is exclusively by boat, with no public roads leading to the park.
  • Prepare for a true wilderness experience; ensure you have proper gear and let someone know your plans.
  • Be mindful of limited maintenance services; pack out all refuse to preserve the park's natural beauty.
  • Cell service may be limited, so plan accordingly for safety and communication.
  • Check for any posted orders or park regulations before your visit to ensure a smooth experience.
