Heirloom Hamlet
4 sites · RVs, Tents5 acres · Ridgeland, SCAni, Fitch and I are typical people (mostly) who are running an experiment. We are trying to find out if a person can use their hands and their head to handcraft a little piece of heaven, with very little money. Three years ago we left our South Florida home studio and creative furniture business to pursue a new goal. We wanted to do something special while we still could...something different and interesting with our lives. Have we done that? You be the judge. We set out to design and hand build an experience in environmentally friendly living that balances modern and old-world homestead features. You will see us erecting micro-cabins, installing solar arrays, dry toilets and composting. We're woodworking, clay-forming and metal pounding. We are big believers in being mindful and respectful of our environment wherever possible, but also in being reasonable and balanced in that endeavor. So, we are incorporating both alternative and municipality utilities as they fit our homestead design. Through good design, our goal is to show just how "normal" bio-compatible, small living can feel. We all have priorities and they will naturally vary greatly...and that's okay. But we don't believe that any of us should be so self-focused that we completely shut out the importance of being good to the earth and good to others. To be completely transparent, though, we also have had a goal to inspire something good from within, in any onlooker. We've found it to be so fullfilling to identify real wants and needs from perceived ones, and then to work hard to literally, physically turn ideas into a reality. It is a true challenge to turn off some of the modern world's noise and nail down what we personally really need and want from life, as opposed to what we have been trained to need and want. Even if we are among the few that can do that, it may be even more difficult to muster the courage to make the changes necessary to go and get that life. Ani and I feel like this "happiness" word we hear so often has become such a buzz word that it has been overused (or at least misused) these days. We think that maybe more of us would feel more fullfilled if we were striving for "the pursuit of contentment" rather than the mystical "pursuit of happiness". Possibly then we'd feel a sense of control over our life and not be so aimlessly trying to get a hold on the abstract. This is the conclusion we have personally come to and it is where we've aimed our focus as we carve out our place. At the very least we hope that our guests don't expect to find a common, and definitely not corporate, approach to living here, that they can appreciate some of our old-fashioned ways. We hope that as we cross paths, we won't be held to a business standard that we have worked very hard to remove ourselves from. We realized everyone has a right to be themselves, but our presentation at Heirloom Hamlet has been purposefully designed to be a relaxing getaway in a unique hideaway.

The plantation is rich in Civil War history and people still find arrowhead 's, Civil war buttons and other Civil War related items on the dirt roads where the soldiers marched through the plantation. It is a quiet, peaceful neighborhood where owners enjoy the country life.
