For outdoor adventurers, Denver offers the perfect blend of city comforts and wilderness access. When the mountains are calling, head west—within an hour, you can escape the city. A little further, and the silence of the Rockies takes over completely. From RV parks to backcountry tent sites, this part of Colorado is overflowing with great campsites.

Close to downtown, Cherry Creek State Park is perfect for quick getaways. Go boating on the reservoir, or try horseback riding and model airplane flying. Campsite reservations are required; book early for summer nights. To the north, Golden Gate Canyon State Park has yurts, cabins, and two campgrounds.

If you have a few days, drive 70 miles to Rocky Mountain National Park. Reserve in advance or arrive early to get a tent site with a picnic table in the park’s five campgrounds. The city campgrounds in nearby Estes Park offer full hookups and stunning views. If you’re bringing kids, head for Mary’s Lake—the heated pool will be a hit.

For easy access to hiking trails, head for the Lincoln National Forest. From Guanella Pass Campground, you can visit the Georgetown ghost town. The 15 sites at West Chicago Creek sit near the trails in the Mount Evans wilderness. Both areas are first-come, first served except from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
