Home to one of Australia’s quirkier big things–the Big Prawn–it doesn’t quite have the same holiday buzz as Byron, but the beaches are just as nice and it makes a great base for those looking for affordable camping option, especially for families.

Greg, the owner of the farm, is such a lovely person, he made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. He even took us in his car to see the mountain and the cows, and he was incredibly hospitable and attentive throughout our stay. We had a wonderful night, with incredible views and so much peace. Sugar beach ranch is a really special place. Right on the beach with gorgeous forest and horse paddocks surrounding. The campsite is lovely with nice shady trees, toilet and water. I took my horse for a horse stay which was awesome for sunrise and sunset rides. It’s a nice spot with a horse or without. The pool is lovely too. Hosts were lovely and helpful. Highly recommend!

Weekend Trip to Tyalgum Showground
We took the caravan for a weekend trip away and we were absolutely thrilled with the Showgrounds and the Tyalgum village. The facilities are clean and well maintained. Beautiful outlook surrounding the park. We had a great time at the local hotel, great place to check out for dinner and a couple of drinks. Tyalgum Is a lovely town definitely worth a visit

Weekend Trip to Oakey Ridge
Because of our schedule, we had no choice but to arrive around 7 pm, so we had to set up in the dark. It was raining and very windy, so it was quite difficult for us, but Greg helped us with absolutely everything — pitching our tent, putting up our gazebo, and even lending us pegs since it was our first camping trip and we hadn’t brought any. We were so, so grateful and relieved. And even though it was raining and we couldn’t use the fire properly, he still helped us light the firewood beforehand when we told him it was our first time and we weren’t really sure how to do it. That was incredibly kind of him. We couldn’t see the view properly when we arrived at night, but when we woke up in the morning, the scenery was absolutely stunning. It made us want to come back again on a sunny day — this place is truly perfect. Even though our first camping experience was quite challenging, Greg turned it into such a wonderful memory. We’re so thankful to him. We’ll definitely be recommending this place to others. Even the drive here was beautiful, so we truly, truly recommend it.

What a gem of a Hipcamp. This is a must place to stay, offering both powered and unpowered sites. Brianna was amazing explaining walks, swimming areas & general information on the village within 5 minute drive. The shower & toilet block were immaculate. The surrounding hills with view of Mt Warning were beautiful, if you are looking for peace and quiet this is the perfect spot. Thank you for a beautiful stay, will definitely be back.

This is one of the nicest camp grounds we have ever been too. Flat, level sites. Amenities are clean and well kept. The common area and camp kitchen is a highlight. Hosts: Peter and Jannine are extremely accommodating and super friendly. The creek is beautiful. Its a magical place with the birdlife & fireflies at the right time of the year!

When to go

Summer is warm and winter is mild, which helps ensure that fashionable Byron Bay is popular year round. It gets really busy during summer holidays, so make sure you book ahead. Byron’s also a hotspot during Schoolies Week (mid to late November) and is best left to the teenagers at this time. At Easter, Byron is home to the Byron Bay Bluesfest, one of the biggest blues festivals in the country. Winter, between June and October, is a great time to see whales.
