With nearly 20 percent of Washington D.C covered in parkland, it’s not all business and politics in the U.S. capitol. The area boasts miles of well kept trails, waterways, and green space well suited for urban outdoor adventures. You’d be hard pressed to find a place to camp within the District of Columbia, but you’ll find many options in the surrounding area including Westmoreland State Park, Greenbelt Campground, Bull Run Regional Park, and a number of sites on private land. For a peaceful escape inside the city, visit Rock Creek Park, where you might spot deer, owls, and coyotes while exploring more than 30 miles of hiking trails, horseback riding, or boating. The D.C. area offers endless opportunities for running, hiking, and cycling, including the Capital Crescent Trail, the C&O Canal Trail, and the Mount Vernon Trail. If you feel like getting out on the water, paddle around the Tidal Basin to catch a unique view of the monuments, or canoe or kayak along the Potomac River. Just outside D.C. in Virginia, Great Falls Park is an amazing 800-acre natural oasis filled with waterfalls, hiking trails, and kayaking opportunities.
