There's an incredible variety of natural beauty to find in Gunnison National Forest. This sprawling 1.7-million acre region sits about 50 miles southeast of the city. Ambitious mountain climbers will find plenty of challenge here; the area boasts 22 peaks over 13,000 feet high.
Adrenaline junkie of a slightly different stripe? Hit the Slate River's whitewater rapids. This powerful waterway isn't for beginners, though! Not quite ready to tackle that challenge? Trout fishing is also quite popular on the shores of the Slate.
Are you looking for a bit of both? Taylor Park's about an hour east from Crested Butte. This lovely area mixes reservoir access with more mountain-climbing challenges. It's also an excellent choice for those who enjoy quiet nature. The Collegiate Peaks and Fossil Ridge Wilderness Areas prohibit all use of motorized vehicles.
