Welcome to Barnum!  Yes, the Barnum neighborhood is really named for the famed circus tycoon, P.T. Barnum.  He bought a tract of land on the western edge of Denver in 1878 for $11,000, an area at that time that was considered a ‘suburb’ of Denver. The 760 acres became a part of Denver folklore, with rumors of P.T. Barnum making the area into a winter home for his circus. In all, Barnum made just four documented trips to Colorado, and his circus creatures never lived in the western Denver suburb. The neighborhoods of Barnum and Barnum West were established officially in 1887, when incorporation papers were filed.
