Past trips
Site 1 - Private Paradise on Rivers Bend
in Private Paradise on Rivers Bend, VirginiaWe thoroughly enjoyed opening our 2025 camping season at Private Paradise, Site 1. It's a beautiful and spacious site with easy access to the Robinson River. The site came equipped with a nice picnic table, custom built fire pit, and firewood (sold on an honor system). We saw plenty of birds, frogs, toads, and even a few snakes! It was a lovely spring weekend on lovely site. We'll definitely be back!
Tent Camping
in Camping at Wilderness Run, VirginiaMy friends and I enjoyed our recent stay here. It's so close to DC, where we all live, and having the brewery onsite is a plus. There are a few things to keep in mind before coming out, however.
First, the camp site is literally an open crop field. You can set up anywhere except the area next to the pond. The open field makes for great stargazing at night, but does leave you exposed during the day. The only shade you'll have is what you provide, so I highly recommend bringing a pop-up canopy or something similar. You will also need to bring your own fire pit (think solo stove or something similar), as there isn't one on site. Some of the photos posted by previous campers show a ground fire are near the pond but that area is actually off-limits. The field is next to a well-traveled road so you'll hear traffic until it dies down at night. The brewery also features live music, which carried over to the camping area until about 9 or so. There is a Sheetz and 7-11 just outside the farm. Neither had firewood for sale during our stay, but Pitkin's Hardware just down the road had plenty. There is also a Food Lion about a 5-min drive away.
I mention all of this so that future campers know what to expect. We had a nice time camping here. The brewery and vineyard are lovely, and I must say that the beer was quite good! We bought a couple growlers and I suspect we'll return for another weekend getaway in the future since it's so close to home.
Shelly's Woods
in Shelly's Woods, PennsylvaniaAdding to my list
My friends and I very much enjoyed camping at Shelly's Woods this past weekend. The site is spacious, with lots of flat ground to pitch tents or park an RV on. It's also right on the creek, which was also quite lovely. The on-site porto was also nice to have. We didn't use it, but the pavilion would surely come in handy for large gatherings and shelter out of any rain. Shelly's Woods will most certainly be on my short list of go-to Hipcamp sites, particularly since it's only about 2 hrs. (or less, depending on traffic) from DC.
Hilltop Two
in Taylors Landing Camping Club, MarylandSite 1 - Private Paradise on Rivers Bend
in Private Paradise on Rivers Bend, VirginiaThis is a great site, and one I'm happy to add to my short list of Hipcamp spots within 2 hrs. (or less) from DC. It's spacious, mostly flat, and comes equipped with a picnic table and swing-away grill/firepit. Firewood is also available onsite via an "honor box".
The site is situated on the Robinson river, and the water is deep enough in spots for a chest-high dunk in the pool. I didn't see any large fish where we were, but did hear 3 loud splashes in the middle of the night. Lunker bass? Sasquatch throwing rocks? Who's to say?
Graham is a great host who knows what he's doing. The sites are well maintained, and there is even a small "Hipcamp" sign at the property entrance to let you know you are in the right place. We hope to be back before too long!
NOTE: A trash can is provided for ease of collection, BUT you MUST take your trash with you. Also, we found several ticks during our stay. Just prepare accordingly and stay vigilant!
Riverside Tent Camp
in Southern Camp, MarylandMy friends and I had a nice time at Riverside Camp. The weather was definitely on the cold side, but we came prepared with ample firewood. The site sits across the water from the Chicamuxen Wildlife Management Area, and we were treated to the sounds of many animals throughout the weekend, including bald eagles, hawks, owls, shrieking foxes and even howling coyotes at night. I didn't do any fishing on this trip, but I imagine it's pretty good in the warmer months. On site is a fire ring, table and Adirondack chair available for use. There is also a well-kept porta-john nearby! A huge plus about this site is that it's only an hour or less from DC! I'll be adding this one to my list of go-to's, for sure.
Site 5
in Berryville Berries, VirginiaAnother favorite weekend spot
This is a great spot that's only 90 minutes (or less) from D.C. It's spacious, fairly flat, and comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring/grill combo. Lots of room for a group to spread out. There is a porta-john within a short walking distance, which is very well-kept. I'll be adding this site to my list of go-to's, for sure!
Tent Camping on the River
in Carp Cove Farm, West VirginiaGreat weekend getaway!
CARP Cove Farm still ranks among my favorite Hipcamp spots! Host Ralph is a super guy and it's always a pleasure to see him. The campground sits right next to the North River, where I've caught many nice bass over the past few years. The site also includes a fire ring, picnic table, trash can, porta-john and potable water. A proper bathhouse is only a short walk away. Being only 2 hours from DC, CARP Cove Farm is a great spot for a weekend getaway with friends. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks again, Ralph!
Parsons landing
in Parsonâs Landing, MarylandWe had a great time camping at Parsons Landing. The site is right on the water and offers up beautiful sunsets and starry nights. Elliott was very communicative, making sure we had all the details going in. My friends and I brought our own kayaks, but there were two available for use on the property (bring your own life jackets). The porto-potty was well maintained and nice to have on site. I can honestly say that Parsons Landing will be added to my growing list of "go-to" Hipcamp sites. Keep in mind that you're camping on wetlands. Mosquitoes and horseflies can be a thing in the hotter months, so be sure to bring bug spray.
Site 4
in Berryville Berries, VirginiaA welcome weekend getaway addition
My friends and I enjoyed a lovely weekend at Berryville Berries. We stayed at site 4, which had plenty of space for five adults, one dog, three tents and three SUV's. The site included a fire ring and picnic table, but no grill. I had wrongly assumed from a previous camper's photo that there was a grill on-site. Fortunately, one of our crew brought a grill to use.
Site 4 consists of a clump of clearings to set up in. The main clearing is situated right on the creek, with adjacent clearings nearby. We were also decently separated from neighboring sites, which was nice. For instance, we barely heard or saw our neighbors at Sites 3 or 5.
The path to access site 4 is grassy and a bit rugged, but we were able to traverse it with a Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Cherokee and Subaru Forester. I recommend getting the lay of the land before committing your own vehicle to driving it.
Note: On arrival, Google Maps will lead you to a steel-gated entrance and a paved road leading to a private residence. That's not the road to take. Just a little further down the road is another entrance between two wooden fences leading to an unpaved road through a grassy field. Just follow that road until you start seeing numbered signs on the left.
All in all, we had a nice time and hope to be back soon. A huge bonus is that the site is less than 90 mins from DC!
Tent Camping on the River
in Carp Cove Farm, West VirginiaAlmost Heaven Riverfront Bridge
in Stoney Creek Campground, West VirginiaHad a nice time camping with friends at the Almost Heaven Riverfront Bridge site. It's a nice spot for a quick and easy getaway to the country. The site itself is spacious and the river is steps away. This weekend in particular was quite lovely, since the fall leaves were in full color. Stargazing at night was also pretty spectacular. Having the camp store and dedicated bath house nearby are also big pluses. Thank you for being such a gracious host, Andrey.
