Camp Tyler - Cheap, Functional

4 sites · RVs2 acres · Lacrosse, WA
Camp Tyler Dusty is a 2.5 acre area at the junction of highway 26 and 127 in Whitman County, WA. This location is in the heart of the palúspam territory, the traditional lands of the Palus tribe of Indigenous Americans*. There is a quonset hut on the property which used to be operated as the "Dusty Country Store." The Tylers bought the site in 2021 to use as a Van Life campground. It's been renamed "Camp Tyler" but we haven't yet changed the signs. We have six 50 amp plug ins but are still working to get the water back to potable (lots of nitrates in this farming county's ground water!). We have a vending machine with drinks, chips, and candy available 24/7. There is a store next door that has propane, some hardware, gasoline. There is a rest area a little over a mile away by either highway or back road. That rest area has two toilets but no running water. About 12 miles away (to the west) is the town of Lacrosse - where there is a grocery store, bank, cafe, gas station, and an RV dump station. About 16 miles to the east is Colfax, which is a town with lots of businesses and services. We have working bathrooms inside the quonset hut and are currently working out the details to get a vendor to provide coffee and snacks. When Tina's coffee shop is up and running, the indoor bathrooms will become available to all during her operating hours. This is not a glamorous, nature rich site. It's cheap and easy overnight parking and we are just getting started figuring out how to structure pricing. We have free wifi and will offer 50 amp plug in for an hourly or overnight fee. We'll have a graduated fee for overnight stays. * Over time we plan to carry merchandise created by Palus, Cayuse, Nez Perce and Yakima authors and artists and provide opportunities for non-indigenous visitors to learn about the Palus people on site. If you are Palus, Cayuse, Nez Perce or Yakima, please reach out to us for codes you can use for free accommodation.

Expand your wine-tasting adventure with several other acclaimed wineries located within a 10-mile radius. Located 350 feet from a county road, this peaceful space is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Walla Walla Valley, offering extraordinary views. The farm is "odor-free," featuring only field crops and no livestock, ensuring a clean and tranquil environment. The site provides easy access to a spacious 20 x 50 ft parking area, perfectly situated between a charming antique barn and a farm shop, out of sight from the main house. It accommodates RVs or self-contained trailers of any size or length, with ample room for towed cars or trailers to park and maneuver. Site is next to a private 18 x 35 ft patio with a picnic table and a propane-powered fire pit, ideal for relaxing and soaking in stunning views of the fields, nearby creek, and the Blue Mountains. Guests can also take leisurely walks along the farm fields, vineyard, or railroad tracks (provided no active farming operations are underway, which isn't very often). Adding to the charm of this property is a friendly large dog named Oso, who roams the land to ensure its security from wildlife (deer, coyotes, etc). I can keep Oso in my yard during the day (please see the pet policy and wildlife guidelines for more details). Once he checks you out, you’ll be his new best friend. This peaceful retreat offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty and flavors of Walla Walla wine country while enjoying unparalleled tranquility. Camping in Palouse Falls State Park guide

Overview

About

The bird’s-eye view of the white-and-blue spray of surging Palouse Falls down the black of the basalt canyon makes this park a must-see. Formed during the Ice Age floods over 10,000 years ago (this is a noted stop on the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail), there are numerous interpretive signs that speak to the area’s dramatic geologic history, as well as a short hike to the top of a nearby hill for another perspective. Amateur photographers should make this one an overnight stay to capture the glow of the falls at dawn and dusk. With only 11 tent campsites, Palouse Falls Campground provides a front-row seat for capturing the beauty of the falls in early morning light or at sunset.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and fill up quickly on weekends and holidays.
  2. The campground features only 11 tent-only campsites, each of which can accommodate two tents and up to four people. Vehicle lengths are limited to up to 20 feet.
  3. Campsite fees are payable by cash or check only, and additional vehicle fees apply.

When to go

Visit in spring or early summer to see the surrounding shrub-steppe plateau covered in vibrant green new growth and to see water flow over the falls, thanks to early-season glacial melt. Birdwatchers during this time of year should also keep an eye out for white-throated swifts, yellow warblers, and horned larks. Birds of prey abound with peregrine falcons nesting in the cliffs and golden eagles hunting around the falls.

Know before you go

  1. The waterfall is viewable from the parking lot, while a short, third-of-a-mile trail veers through nearby grassland.
  2. Stay on designated trails in the park, as those that are not can be unsafe and sometimes veer onto private property.
  3. One campsite at Palouse Falls Campground is ADA accessible.
  4. Watch for rattlesnakes, frequently spotted in the park.
  5. Temperatures can soar in the summer months, and water is sometimes unavailable at the campground, so it’s best to pack your own.
  6. Visit Walla Walla Shaved Ice (open Friday through Sunday, April through October) for a wide variety of Hawaiian shaved ice flavors, as well as other snacks and beverages.
